A Bret/Vince where Bret can actually work and fire off some live rounds at Vinnie Mac is also fun to imagine. I can’t imagine he forgives Vince enough to do a storyline with him if he doesn’t almost die, which might not (probably doesn’t?) happen if they clumsy oaf Bill Goldberg doesn’t give him that concussion.

After Owen, I never got the impression that Bret wanted to go on wrestling until he physically couldn't anymore. He would have been 44 when WCW folded so I can see him retiring fulltime and working a big money match every other year or so for foreign promoters but other than that, chills at home with his money.

Idk. Bret was in the ring less than three months after Owen died when Eric Bischoff told him he could have off all the time that he needed.

Now maybe Bret was paranoid that Bischoff would go back on his word but in his book, Bret obviously took comfort being around the boys and getting back to work after Owen passed.

And his marriage and family life were absolute shit in the late ‘90s/early ‘00s so I kind of doubt there is any scenario where he could have relaxed sadly!

He probably tries acting again and gets straight to video action movies or at best gets DDP's part in Devil's Rejects or something. Devotes time to writing articles and entertaining speculation. Training family members. Like I think he has more going on outside of the ring than in it by then.

Yeah he didn’t live in Connecticut yet.

I have definitely seen clips of JR in late ‘80s/early ‘90s WCW where he is way cattier about WWF. He must have just gotten off a friendly phone call with Bruce Prichard or something.

JR always came off as either too happy or way too angry when it came to things like that. It was always really kinda precious when they tried to take shots. Like, there's just such a gulf in so many important ways until Hogan jumped and they could really lay any claim to being on the same level.

I was just thinking on the throne earlier this morning while listening to Double J that the gap right now between WWE and AEW, while significant is way smaller than the gap between WWF and WCW from ‘88 to ‘93.

If I talk to any slightly older casual fan, WCW to them was just store brand WWF.

It always was for me, but that's in large part because I didn't get access to it until 1995 when it was full of WWF guys I hadn't seen in ages.

Even after they got Hogan and Savage, I totally drunk the WWF Kool Aid that they couldn’t hang anymore with the New Generation. It still looked cheap too for ‘94 and first half of ‘95. WWF was running shitty buildings after WrestleMania VIII but at least it looked relatively good.

It wasn’t until Nitro and guys at or near their prime like Hall & Nash (and they brought in the luchadors who were like nothing like anything in WWF), that I thought WCW was at the same level.

WCW never looked as good visually. That's huge for me, though. It looked super clean, like it was shot like a Nick gameshow crew.

“Fact of the matter is, Conrad , that I’m not a racist. My karate instructor is black.”

He also claimed that a bunch of winos would be in the stands for ‘92-‘93 Center Stage tapings to try and get out of the cold (in Atlanta!?) , which I feel like we would have seen screencaps of by now.

Of course, early ‘90s WCW fans were so goofy looking that maybe it’s hard to point out the unhoused.

Eddy getting the title in the middle of Savage/Flair would have been a fail. If anything they would have used it as an excuse if Hogan/Giant failed to pop a buyrate at Superbrawl. Eddy vs Flair and Arn would be fun, but the DOD would not really have worked for Eddy main events.
He really would have likely been booked like Rey was in his first WWE title run. Constantly murdered by heels so the Mega Powers could run in and clear the joint out.
I guess you could use Eddy for something in the Sting/Luger dynamic, where Luger gets the title shot, Jimmy Hart clearly whacks Eddy with the mega phone and doofy Luger gets the title, while Sting calls him on his shit, runs the tape back and implores Luger to return the belt.

Huh? I am not going to defend ‘96-‘98 WCW main events as masterful works of pro wrestling but they were a lot better than what directly preceded them and directly seceded them.

The Hogan era, in general. The main event scene at least delivers some great matches even in the silliest pre-Hogan era and then delivers some more goodness after BatB 2000 when Hogan goes home. It was white hot between the nWo formation and early 1998, but the main's were usually really lame.

Kinda feeds into my ideas that a strong midcard is more important than anything else for a better product.

Eddie getting the title for a few weeks isn't the worst idea but it derails him hard. He gets buried by just not being on the level of everyone else yet. It'd be at best like putting the title on Tito in 1989. He'd have to turn earlier to get some of the stink off. Eddie on paper is a perfect ally for the Mega Powers, too. Dude was a squeaky clean workhorse who could make a perfect face in peril for a hot tag, not to mention give Arn or Pillman stuff to do while the others go for the Mega Powers.

Eddie gets the belt, he has it for a month tops. During that window we wedge in a Mega Powers six-man, a Giant match, a Savage match, and a workrate match against Benoit or Pillman or something. He'd be booked like a chump but the matches would be really fun.

Also, if you don't think we get a super offensive Eddie cameo in Billionare Ted during that time, you're crazy.

Hogan’s first year and a half or so in the company or Summer of Suck to BATB ‘00 is the worst period for main events for WCW. I almost started latter period back at Fingerpoke of Doom but early ‘99, for whatever reason, it seemed like the old guard were working harder than they had in years.

I honestly can't in good conscience say that Hogan's initial face run is worse than anything from 1999-2000. The highs are probably higher during that period, but Hogan was consistent. You knew what you were getting. The big outlier is that I consider the Doomsday Cage to be one of the worst matches, if not the worst, I have ever seen, and nothing during 1999-2000 is close to that.

Yeah. First year and a half of Hogan had the great Vader match at SuperBrawl V and some good to great Flair matches. Bad outweighs the good but there is a lot more good than late ‘99/early ‘00 WCW.

Best main event during that era is Chris Benoit Vs SID at Souled Out ‘00 and there is a massive black cloud hanging over it.

It’s not so much the future familicide, the black cloud I was referring to was more related to the fact that it was a panic move to appease The Radicalz to stay that failed miserably.

Benoit should've brought the belt with him.
