I'd love that but there's no way it happens. Now that said, Mero and Kanyon as a heel team is what's up.

It’s kinda shitty that AEW wasn’t more transparent up front about when and where Grand Slam Australia would be airing. Part of me wonders if it was a case of the company itself not knowing. When they finally announced it for that Saturday night on TNT/Max a few weeks ago, they said it would be at 8:00 in the usual Collision time slot. People rightfully pointed out the conflict with the NBA All-Star Saturday.

A full-price, live PPV never really made sense, given the time difference. Making it a live special on Max would have been cool. Having said all that, although airing the show on a 20-hour delay kinda sucks, having the NBA All-Star stuff as a lead-in is a great opportunity, so I understand why they are doing what they’re doing.

You forgot to reference K. Allen Frey to make this post fit the thread.

David Arquette was about to win the world title within minutes of that pic. There were no "no ways" with Russo.

Ron Harris was soon to be a TV headliner.
No one liked Mero enough and without Sable he just wouldn't get a fair shake. He would've given DDP some career high matches then, though. Peak DDP clicks with Marvelous

Tbh if AEW did a full reset like WCW did when the Bischoff-Russo thing started, I'd be super into it. This does not mean it's a good idea of course.

Unless that reset means someone else besides Tony is booking it's kinda pointless.

What would be the current AEW equivalent of "HEY SID DID YA GET YOUR SCISSORS" to crickets?

So while I know they had no plan for the identity of the Black Scorpion, was there one for midcard Flair and the Horsemen until they punted?

I *think* some combination of the group was going to beat Doom for the tag belts? I'm probably totally wrong on that

A recent Corny clip mentioned that Jim Herd wanted the Starrcade 89 Tournament style event to happen each year. So let's pretend Herd stays in power and the event proves successful and see what would have been booked each year.

Right off the bat I'm changing the "rules" to Survivor Series 91 booking where the World title match is booked outside of the gimmick.

Starrcade 90:
World Champ Sting vs The Black Scorpion
No 1 Con Tourney: Luger, Stan Hansen, Flair, Pillman (I could have put in El Gigante but HELL NO)

World tag title: Doom vs Windham and Arn
Tourney: Steiners, Hayes and Garvin, Steve Armstrong and Tracy Smothers, Saito and Muta (I could have done Youngbloods, Morton and Rich, One night only Skyscrapers, Master Blasters, Hughes/Madman or Zenk/Pillman if we move Pillman out of the singles scene.)

----
91:
World champ Lex Luger vs Ron Simmons
Tourney: Sting, Rick Rude, Cactus Jack, El Gigante (Dear Lord!)

World tag title: Steamboat/Dustin Rhodes vs Arn and Eaton
Tourney: Vader/Hughes, Steiner Bros, US Patriots, Hayes and Garvin
--
92
World champ Ron Simmons vs Vader
Tourney: Sting, Muta, Dr Death, Steve Austin

World Tag title: Douglas/Steamboat vs Windham/Pillman
Tourney: Johnny Gunn and Tom Zenk, Tex and Pierce, Cactus and Barbarian, Sasaki and Liger (Where have all the team's gone....gone to graveyards one by one....) Uhhhh... DDP and Vinne Vegas are left in the cold. Can we find Eaton a partner? Mr. Wonderful? 2 Cold?
--
93
World Champ Vader vs Flair
Tourney: Steamboat, Rhodes, Rude, Austin

World tag: Nasty Boyz vs Hawk and Sting
Tourney: Cactus and Maxx, Roma/Orndorff, Harlem Heat, 2 Cold and Bagwell (Left out are The Kongs, Tex and Pierce, Thunder and Lightning, The Cole Twins)
----
94:
World Champ Hogan vs Butcher
Tourney: Vader, Sting, Avalanche, Rhodes (Sorry Duggan! So close Arn! It was tempting Bossman!!)

World tag Patriot/Bagwell vs Pretty Wonderful
Tourney: Nasty Boys, Harlem Heat, Buck and Slater, Regal and Jean Paul Levesque (Sorry Armstrong Bros!)
--
95
World champ Savage vs Flair
Tourney: Sting, Luger, Sasaki, Arn Anderson (Hogan's gone. The Giant will be written out somehow to preserve all the fresh main event matches with him- he was on "probation" storyline wise)

World Tag Harlem Heat vs Chono and Tenzan (Let's give it the international flavor instead of a stale match)
Tourney: Eaton and Regal, American Males, Meng and Kurasawa, Pillman and Beniot (No dice Men at Work, Tempted to put DDP/Max Muscle in for ATM Eric, Buck and Slater lose out to Parker's other men, Barrio Bros (LOL), Armstrong Family, Super Assassins, sorry Nasties!)
---
96
World champ Hogan vs Roddy Piper
Tourney: Luger, the Giant (NWO), DDP, Eddy (Eddy was being elevated ATM)

World tag Hall and Nash vs Faces of Fear
Tourney: Benoit and Arn, Amazing French Canadians, Public Enemy, Nasty Boys, (No go to High Voltage, Renegade/Joe Gomez, Enos and Buck, Armstrong Family, Scott Steiner was out injured. Regal is TV champ so the Bluebloods are off the hook.)
-------
97
World Hogan vs Sting
Tourney: DDP, Hennig (NWO), Bret Hart (Canada), Ric Flair (seems to have missed the PPV with a worked injury)

World tag Steiner Bros vs Buff and Norton
Tourney: Giant and Luger, Savage and Scott Hall (NWO) (Nash's "heart attack" incident), Harlem Heat (T is about to start his singles push), Wrath and Mortis (Maybe next year for Disorderly Conduct, Ernest Miller and Glacier, Faces of Fear, The Flock, Regal and Taylor, Public Enemy, Villianos, etc)
--------
98
World champ Goldberg vs Nash
Tourney: DDP, Jericho (still chasing that elusive Goldberg match), Scott Steiner (nWo Black and White), Scott Hall (nWo Red and Black)

World tag champs: Vacant (Last held by Rick Steiner and Judy Bagwell) So the tourney will be for the new champs:
Benoit and Malenko (Horseman), Konnan and Luger (Red and Black nWo), Giant and Stevie Ray (nWo Black and white), Eddy and Juvi (LWO)
---
99
World champ Bret Hart vs Goldberg (oh no!)
Tourney: Sting, Beniot, Sid, THE CHOSEN ONE Jeff Jarrett (Leaving out Luger..excuse me THE TOTAL PACKAGE, Vampiro, Nash, DDP, Flair, Dustin Rhodes, etc)

World tag titles...wait for it.... Vacant!
Tourney: Harris Boys, Mamalukes, Saturn and Malenko (Revolution), Harlem Heat (PG 13, Rotundo and Dr Death, Lash and Disco, Berlyn and the Wall, Villanos, Disorderly Conduct, Fit Finlay and Knobbs,
--
2000 (Kill me)
World Scott Steiner vs Sid
Goldberg, Terry Funk (Fuck it we'll book it as a Legends last stand), Shane Douglas, Jeff Jarrett

World tag: Chuck Palumbo and Sean Stasiak vs DDP and Nash
Tourney: Kronik, Lance Storm and Elix Skipper , Sean O Haire and Jindrak, Kidman and Rey (Sympathies to 3 Count, Jung Dragons, Vito and Reno, Buff and Lex, Gen Rection's crew etc

I actually like the idea behind the Starrcade 89 tournaments but it should have been a Clash instead of freaking Starrcade! Imagine if Clash IX was the tournament and Flair-Funk are at Starrcade instead.

I think Brody fantasy rebooked Starrcade 89 reversed with that Clash before. I agree with both of you; it would have been better that way.

Not a huge fan of the round-robin tournament format but Starrcade would have done better if it had been Flair-Muta (Ric cutting jingoistic promos about how the Japanese are buying our movie studios, brainwashing kids with their video games but they're not going to take the world title!), Luger-Sting and Steiners-Warriors on their own.

Starrcade 90:
World Champ Sting vs The Black Scorpion
No 1 Con Tourney: Luger, Stan Hansen, Flair, Pillman (I could have put in El Gigante but HELL NO)
I was mentally struggling with how this booking would go as Hansen WON'T lose 3 times in one night. Flair needs to win the tourney (I guess), but I'm not sure if he's the Scorpion in this scenario then.
So I guess I'm going Hansen beats Pillman clean, loses to Luger clean, and gets distracted by the Horsemen and gets counted out while trying to kick their ass. Pillman in order to not get totally buried, can score an upset over Luger after Hansen runs down and whacks him with the cowbell as the ref is down and Pillman is dazed. Hansen will have to stick around for one more night to job the US title back to Luger the night after.

91:
World champ Lex Luger vs Ron Simmons
Tourney: Sting, Rick Rude, Cactus Jack, El Gigante (Dear Lord!)
Sting has to win the tourney. They can build the night around Cactus and Abby trying to kill Sting regardless. We can go with Sting gets mauled by Jack and Abby during the Rude match for the DQ - pissing Rude off so his match with Jack is full blown mean guy fighting. Jack and Abby attack Sting AGAIN during the Jack/Sting match for the DQ (or maybe Sting gets a flash pin if he needs the points.) Then for Sting/Gigante, Gigante sees Jack and Abby waddling down the aisle and takes the chance to save his friend Sting by charging down the ramp to cut them off and accepts his count out fate.

---
I couldn't believe how quickly the roster fell apart at the end of 92 with Gordy and the Steiners gone, Rude hurt, Dangerous Alliance imploded etc

--
93
World Champ Vader vs Flair
Tourney: Steamboat, Rhodes, Rude, Austin
A perfect chance to elevate Austin and set up a star making feud with Flair.
--
95
World champ Savage vs Flair
Tourney: Sting, Luger, Sasaki, Arn Anderson (Hogan's gone. The Giant will be written out somehow to preserve all the fresh main event matches with him- he was on "probation" storyline wise)
If WCW was actually booking this instead of me retro fitting it, I'd like to think we'd have gotten Sting, Luger, Savage, Hogan to play off the in fighting that the faces had been doing since Nitro one.

I was really "surprised" in 97 and 98 how they managed to have this giant roster and no real tag teams to push.

I think I was wrong that Judy Bagwell was technically the last tag champ in 98 and Kenny Kaos was still technically the co-champ. They ran an angle that an injured Robbie Rage was bitching at Kenny for cheating on him with Steiner as a partner. It seems the tag titles actually become vacant right after Starrcade.

Digging through the results of those last few years trying to remember/figure out who was in the nWo and what branch was quite a chore.

All that money to basically do nothing. He did nothing to enhance the nWo angle and I always forget he managed the Steiners.

My literal only memory of him was his debut where he threw up the five fingers teasing a new nWo member (which I think was the Giant?).

Once Bischoff turned and the idea of it being an invasion stopped, he had no purpose.

Gosh I should double check so I don't lie, but IIRC the 5th guy was supposed to be Waltman, but his WWF contract was still in limbo so they had to do an emergency turn. (It might be Davey Boy and not Waltman I'm mixing up)

It was supposed to be Davey, I definitely remember those rumors. Vince pretty much immediately gave into his contract demands when he learned of the talks.

Did they ever write DiBiase off TV? IIRC he just stopped showing up once the Steiners broke up.
