People don't bring it up as much as '97 or '98 cause WCW hadn't even reached its peak in popularity yet but the fact that the main event of Starrcade '96 wasn't advertised as a non-title match is just as much BS as those other Starrcade main events.

Honestly, shitty finishes might almost be better than making your fans feel like dumbasses like the finish to '96 did.

Piper not winning the belt is one of the stupidest things they ever did. I hated WCW as a kid but they got me interested in a match with two old guys who hated each other to where I tried to keep up. Piper winning would've hooked me good and losing it at the nWo's own bullshit biased ppv would've been perfectly fine.

Those Piper vignettes from Alcatraz completely ruined any goodwill they had at the time.

Piper's WCW stuff is better than I remembered it but only because Piper's WCW stuff seemed really REALLY friggin bad when I was in my kids, teens, and twenties. Now as an uncool adult, I emphasize more with trying to be hip and failing than I did back then. But even five years ago, whenever I watched a WCW show and Piper showed up, it just gave me strong "Ugh! Dad stop it! You're embarassing us" feelings.

Piper is why I started watching WCW, actually. He was the only one from my very fleeting enjoyment of the WWF when I was very young that I remembered liking, so the idea of "Hogan is a bad guy and Roddy Piper is going to beat him up" pumped me up nice as an 11 year old just getting really into it.

Idk if there's any character in wrestling that has ever been lamer and out of touch than 1999 Roddy Piper. Just promos filled with lame Viagra jokes and South Park references.

2011-13 The Rock came sort of close but at least you knew that he was cool in other places.

The Rock showing up really ruined whatever lingering momentum was left over from Summer of Punk. I honestly think WWE was pretty good in 2011-13 but whenever The Rock showed up, it felt like the wrestling equivalent of a big name headliner showing up to a local comedy showcase to work out some lame jokes and dump on the schmucks who are there. Idk if Rock lost his promo abilities or he just didn't care but man, 2010s Rock mic work is NOT GREAT.

At least WCW era Piper seemed like he was trying. He was failing horribly but I'll probably watch a '99 Piper MUH KIDS promo over Rock's lame locker room trash talk.

(one day, I might go through threat of a '00-2010s WWE thread.)

Piper was never not compelling, even at his absolute worst. He'd built up that sense, real or not, of danger when he had a live mic. Pillman is the only one who compares.

No one ever brings up the times Rock just killed people off with promos. Like instant burial. He was so good and so convincing that it just destroyed some guys, and the best example is Booker. The second he and Booker interacted, Rock destroyed him and WCW in one fell swoop when the invasion needed Booker reasonably strong (even with that booking). I put a lot of blame on Rock for Booker being a joke the next couple years because he just DESTROYED him and Booker even at his best couldn't compare to Rock.

Yeah, people forget The Rock has ONLY spent like less than a decade wrestling cumulatively and I don't think he ever really learned how to properly give and take verbally with heels as a babyface. He would just try to steamroll and clown them. It was incredibly gratifying to see CM Punk verbally body him before the 2013 Royal Rumble (even if it was just a stumble towards him jobbing to Dwayne).

Punk telling Rock his arms were too short to box with god was so good.

Austin was the only one they let get the better of Rock. Rock would always do a Rock promo on Austin, Austin would just straight up tell Rock he's going to end him, and Rock would make a silly face. Always.

We never got Rock and Nash interacting properly. Rock burying the nWo out of the gate aside, they never threw down in a promo battle, and it would've been the best interaction.

Still hurts my head a little that Bobby Walker got a push like 4 years before he had his botch filled WCW run as a TV JTTS. I don't even recall PWI pushing this at all, much less whatever little Worldwide I might have seen during this era. I was only 10 so I was probably not staying up until Midnight to watch the local WCW syndication on Saturday nights too often,

A few buddies and I watched the combo of Slamboree 95's main event (Hogan/Savage vs Vader/Flair) and then the WCW ep of Baywatch with all four guys.
The match didn't have much heat considering the star power. When Angelo Poffo was beaten up post match Flair threw like 4 awful looking punches at him (assuming that Flair didn't want to smack a 70 year old dude) but Arn Anderson gave no fucks as he slammed Poffo to the mat.

Baywatch was even more poorly acted and cheesy then I recalled. All 3 of my friends claimed to not have watched the series, which stunned me as 2 of them at least would have been prime self cranking age when it aired.

A local newspaper ad had Bobby Walker and Simmons teaming at the Clash. 2 Cold Scorpio has got to be one of the most fortunate subs in wrestling history.

Man, Bobby Walker looked terrible/green in the late '90s, I can't imagine how crappy he was 5 years earlier. Only possible slight solace is it was during the Bill Watts era so he was probably directed to keep it as simple as possible.

It's funny how WCW had a much more diverse roster over a ten year period than the WWF did but treated them all like shit. To even attempt to push Bobby Walker when the competition was just riding the Papa Shango or Koko midcard money train is something.

This was last moment I think Bobby Eaton got anything resembling a push. I'd be surprised if I couldn't count the number of televised victories Bobby Eaton had after 1996 on one hand.
Edit---I looked up his cagematch...Bobby Eaton had five televised wins in the winter of 1997 alone so it looks like his depush was later than I expected! He had about a .500 record on the C/D shows in '97.

He became mostly a job guy after '98 but him and Kenny Kaos did actually advance to the second round of the WCW Tag Team Titles tournament at the beginning of 1999, beating the astonishing team of La Parka and Silver King.

He also got a WCW Tag Team Titles shot against Harlem Heat in August of '99, teaming with...Barry Darsow! Demolition Express!

His last televised victory was on the September 30th, 1999 Thunder against Luther Biggs, Coach Buzz Stern (Glacier's other gimmick)'s protege!

That's been my profile of the later years of Bobby Eaton. Consider this my half assed, month too late tribute.

Eaton and Darsow would've been an awesome team. Even in the later years, surly vets Bobby and Barry would've had a good place on the b or c-shows. Might've gotten some rockin little BeautySmash vs Filthy Animals shit on Worldwide.

I'm glad i"m not the only that noticed that about the rock burying people. He's not HHH obviously but one of the problems I"ve always had with his promos was that they just seemed like high school putdowns that don't really get a story over. So many guys had their momentum halted because of him, and frankly even at his peak a lot of those insult promos weren't good imo.
