Late Night Talk Show Discussion

Jimmy might be out but Karl Malone is gonna take over.

Apparently in Canada it airs live on the SLICE Channel for me so I can actually watch it as it happens instead of tomorrow morning, nice.

Stewart's bit was kind of lame to me. I was hoping he would go harder, but I don't think he has it in him at this point. He was so done at the end of his original run, and he's definitely mentally healthier for sitting out Trump's first term. Probably the last time I get excited about current Jon Stewart though. He's not the same guy that owned Tucker Carlson anymore. And, the current situation is so much more fucked than the George W. Bush/Tea Party/Trump yelling for Obama's birth certificate (rather than being everyone's supreme overlord) era that emotionally drained him so much. I would lose my mind if I had to cover current politics.

On the other hand, Stephen Colbert bringing back The Colbert Report was incredible, and gave me the catharsis I wanted from Stewart tonight.

I thought it was fine but not as good as it needed to be in the moment especially when they changed days for it. He's gone far harder on Trump and other subjects since coming back so it was definitely a let down although they put some solid work into the clips.

Oliver has a lot more free reign usually to say whatever he wants on HBO so it'll be interesting to see if he goes off or soft pedals. It's pretty obviously all the execs are terrified.

After seeing the Stewart who was cutting promos on McConnell and shit there's not much I really am into with the modern version. Like I appreciate it and am happy he's around but I need someone willing to get angrier.

Oh man he's gonna do some serious lukewarm toasting on all of them now.

Still think the suggested peace offering of sending him to Tubi exclusively was the way to go.

All this did was make Kimmel look bigger than he is. Dude even compared himself to Norman Lear (writer for All in the Family who ended up on Nixon’s Enemy List) on IG last night. If Trump and the FCC hadn’t cried about it, nobody would’ve cared. ABC learned the hard way and brought him back in a week. Most people didn’t give two shits about him before this (I hadn’t watched in years), now they’ll be glued to every monologue. Congrats Trump, FCC, ABC… you played yourself.

I thought this was a much better effort from Stewart. He's better when he does less schtick and has a focused point I think. I agree with him that most of these shooters don't fit a straight left/right narrative and until the larger systemic issues are addressed nothing will change.
