New Orleans starting their seemingly annual salary cap gymnastics to find ways to get under the cap by converting $6.07 Million of S Marcus Maye's base salary into a signing bonus instead.

The gymnastics they are doing is just to get them under the cap. But the reality is they are stuck with an aging roster and are unable to do a proper rebuild until they just burn everything to the ground.

They also keep themselves in this salary cap hell by punting money ahead, then having to restructure contracts to try and spread the $$ out over the length of the contracts (thus the moving from base salary to signing bonuses, etc.) to lower the cap hits of players for the current year.

"Signing bonuses are guaranteed money that is given to a player regardless of whether or not the player stays with the team. For example, a twenty million dollar signing bonus on a five-year player contract would account for four million dollars in cap hits each year for the team. [HQ - This is why some teams may give players a lower base salary but make up for it with a higher signing bonus. This is usually what leads to teams getting into salary cap hell IMO]

However, teams can spread a dead cap hit over two seasons (the current and next season) by releasing or trading a player after June 1st of that year. [HQ - This is why you'll see teams wait to cut/trade a player after June 1st if their dead cap drops from say $17 Million to $9 Million]

There are two types of incentives: likely to be earned (likely incentives) and not likely to be earned (unlikely incentives) [HQ - Likely are usually stat based e.g. giving Patrick Mahomes a $1 Million bonus if he throws for 25 TDs while Unlikely could be giving Travis Kelce $10 Million if he wins the MVP. The Patriots tend to utilize this a lot, usually in either playing a percentage of the team's snaps or getting a bonus if they win an MVP, etc.]."

Other ways of getting around the cap are instead of using $$ towards a signing bonus and spreading it out, the smarter cap-savvy teams will use things like guaranteeing a roster bonus (see Derek Carr), including bonuses for offseason workout programs, meeting a weight loss goal, etc. that can count towards the current cap if met but aren't counted if they are not met.

Lot of moves starting to be made... Titans released K Randy Bullock, OT Taylor Lewan, WR Robert Woods, and LB Zach Cunningham.

Patriots signed RT Conor McDermott to a 2 year extension worth $3.6 Million. Good, low-cost/decent upside move to help stabilize their OL as he was probably one of the more consistent pieces when he was starting.

Seahawks signed FB/ST Captain Nick Bellore to a 2 year extension.

Lions cut DT Michael Brockers saving $10 Million.

Also, lol at this article: https://theathletic.com/4238804/2023/02/24/russell-wilson-denver-broncos-influence-offense/

"Convinced that Carroll and Schneider were inhibiting his quest to win additional Super Bowls and individual awards, Wilson asked Seahawks ownership to fire both of them, according to league sources."

Not surprising at all with the whole Let Russ Cook stuff and his two highest INT seasons came when he threw the ball a lot rather than being the game manager he should be.

On its face, it's kind of a dumb comment from McCarthy (and a shot at Dak's turning the ball over). There's definitely a place to running the ball but if you're more productive throwing, that's why you lean into that side of the offense. All of the best teams were at the top in 1st Downs: KC, Philly, Minnesota, Detroit(!), Buffalo, Cincinnati. San Francisco was 5th in total offensive yards with those other teams right up there.

You don't "need" to be the #1 offense necessarily but Dallas was 10th in yards and 12th in 1st Downs and this sounds like it could be a backslide for the Dallas offense for a team whose defense just isn't that good (sounding familiar to McCarthy's GB tenure).

Raiders are putting the tag on Jacobs if they can’t get him for a longer deal. Good news.
