Double Nickels On The Dime is obviously great, but I think their second album, What Makes A Man Start Fires?, is kind of overlooked even amoung their fans.

Nothing on Youtube like you said, but Bob Dylan Wrote Propaganda Songs and The Only Minority are jams.

'History Lesson Pt. 2' is my favourite Minutemen song, but I suppose that's not really punk at all. Have you guys seen the documentary We Jam Econo? Pretty good, as far as music docs go.

Love that Screeching Weasel tune. & Jawbreaker are one of my favorite bands, natch.

The Kansas City punk scene is pretty refreshingly free of pretension and posturing in my experience. Lawrence, on the other hand, was a haven for trust fund crusties, but had more and better shows.

I'm not suggesting that the whole Toronto scene is like that, as the scene is super diverse and I'm not pretentious enough to comment on the scene as a whole. It's just in my experience the last few years, everyone seemed way more cliquish and condescending than I enjoy. I'm at a point where I like what I like, and I don't have time for bullshit posturing from bands or show-goers, yeah?

Friend of a friend has started throwing a party every Tuesday at 751 Queen Street called 'My Friends Over You' after the New Found Glory song. It's a mix of straight punk, pop-punk, hardcore, etc. The DJs they bring in have seemingly everything you could ask for loaded and ready to go, and the best part? No matter what song, everyone sings along and has a good time. It's refreshing to see something that's completely ego-free, and reminds me of why I got into the scene in the first place.

The Slits are amazing. Cut is definitely one of the greatest albums that could be sheltered under the large umbrella of "punk".

The Kansas City punk scene is small enough, and I've been in/out/on the fringes of it in varying degrees since I was about 15, so I feel like I can comment on it pretty well. The worst part is the prevalence of straight edge hardcore Floorpunch shirt wearing tough guys who like to punch each other in the face at shows, but even most of them are pretty nice guys in a non facepunching context.

trust fund crusties

This just reminded me of a story. So, The Dungeon, right? There was this group of 'punks'( I grew up in a pretty well-off suburb of Toronto despite not being so well off myself) who went to my high school, whom I hung out with briefly until we had a falling out over something stupid. Afterwards, they told me I was 'banned' from shows at The Dungeon. One time, we ended up crossing paths at the same show there, and one of the kids calls me a fag as he's walking by me with two of his friends. I grab the kid and throw him across the room into the rest of his friends. I'm immediately told I'm dead, but nothing ever came of it. The kid ended up dropping out of school and getting a bunch of shitty homemade Korn tattoos.

There were a few of those guys a couple of years ago in Toronto, centered around a straight edge band named Liferuiner. I always got a kick out of the frontman Johnny lecturing people about living a 'healthy' lifestyle when he was probably 300 pounds and wore tight jeans that gave him a comically large man gunt.

Siouxsie & the Banshees - Hong Kong Garden (1978)

They used this as a bumper for Canadian MTV a few days ago. Odd choice to use a song written about a bunch of skinheads harassing immigrants for a talk show, but a pleasant surprise nonetheless (Hong Kong Garden is not to be confused with China Express, which is in Glasgow and sells pizza for reasons that were not explained to me when I went there.)

I suppose my previous post suggests that there's something that's not particularly punk about those songs, when what I really meant to say is that they were quite good at it, despite being more famous for their later work. Oh well.

Oblivians Bad man

Oblivians - Christina

Oblivians Part of your plan

Any Oblivians fans here? They're a pretty seminal band in the Memphis punk rock scene. Jack Oblivian founded Goner records, Greg is now a member of the equally excellent soul/garage/punk/R&B band Reigning Sound, and all three of them were mentors to a young Jay Reatard. I saw them last year at Garage Fest, but unfortunately they were the last band to play (besides a surprise midnight house show by The Spits and Human Eye), and by that time I was too drunk and dehydrated to really get into it. Luckily I saw Reigning Sound play a killer setlist loaded with Oblivians songs this February, and that made up for it.

I wanted to post the title track to Automatic Midnight—my favorite Hot Snakes song—but all I could find on YouTube were dodgy-quality live videos.
