Moshing is stupid in every context, as is crowd surfing. My wife p. much got a concussion from a kick at a The Rocket Summer concert. Youtube them and see how pathetic that is.

Honestly, if you don't like moshing? Stay off the floor. Depending on the crowd, you'll actually see a good section of the audience form a wall around anybody who goes down and actively pull people out if they're being dickheads and/or are fucked up. It's a part of any heavy music scene, though I'll fully agree that moshing at lighter shows is stupid as hell. It's part of the atmosphere considering heavy music - punk, hardcore, death metal, thrash, etc. - is about the release of one's aggression. Every style of music has its own form of dancing that accompanies it, and moshing ("slam dancing," as it was once commonly referred to as) is for heavier fare.

There are as many douchebags as there are people who just want to slam around. The trick is being able to tell them apart from the rest of the crowd, which becomes painfully apparent about halfway through the first song.

Last mosh-pit I witnessed was at a fucking Crystal Castles show I only went to because I was given a ticket free of charge. The person who started it was quite possibly the most obnoxious human being I've ever encountered in my life, but that's another story for another thread.

Well of course if you're at a show for a douchebag band like Crystal Castles you're going to get douchebags in the audience. Don't extrapolate to the whole of the moshing community based on that.

New Misfits due out this year. It's the same lineup as the last 7 years or so - Jerry Only on bass/vocals, Dez Cadena on guitar, and Robo on drums - and sounds...not as terrible as I'd thought it would. Here are two songs off of it:

Misfits - Land of the Dead [EP]

They went from being the standard-bearer (and originators) of rockabilly-inspired horrorpunk to a solid mainstream punk-influenced rock outfit with an extreme horror motif to pretty much sounding like every band they've ever inspired, but it's not horrible. Not as horrible as half of Famous Monsters is, anyway, so that's good. Fun note: Michale Graves' post-Misfits work in Gotham Road and as a solo artist is infinitely better than the two albums he did with Jerry.

The first Misfits release was 1977. The first Cramps release was 1979.

EDIT: I counted the first Cramps EP as their first release. In truth, their first singles came out in '78. The first Misfits single, "Cough/Cool," was released in '77, the same year they formed. The Cramps, however, were formed in '76. This seems to be a case of us both being accurate due to one band's formation predating the other's, but that other's first release predating the initial band.

Cough/Cool is hardly rockabilly inspired horrorpunk. Horror Business is the first Misfits release to really show their trashy B-movie aesthetic, and that came out in 1979. I'd also call their sound far more indebted to doo wop and early 60's pre-Beatles pop than rockabilly, a few songs excepted. The Cramps, I think, beat them to the punch in both of areas.

I can't get into this line-up. At all. I can't stand Jerry Only in general and I hate him even more on vocals. =\

I agree about the Michale Graves comment, though.. it's just too bad he's some crazy right-wing "conservative punk" now.

I think I've decided that I love punk because it's the antithesis of the metal scene: Minimalist Style, Drums are usually emphasized heavily, Lyrics/attitude are the focus instead of instrumental proficiency.

Time to spread the love "around" the USA. California, Boston, Seattle, and Washington D.C. Despite coming around in the early 80's, it is interesting to see the distinction between the bands in terms of general sound too.

I don't know if anyone's gonna be interested in this, but I figured I'd share: My punk band just released an EP. It's vaguely sports themed. If you like sports and punk, you might dig it.
