Blind - Face To Face

Let's talk about pop punk for a moment.

Growing up, there seemed to be a pretty heavy backlash against pop punk in my scene and amongst my circle of friends. It probably had to do with the over-exposure of Blink 182, Good Charlotte, and other bands which leaned more heavily towards the 'pop' side, bringing kids who were going from trend to trend to punk shows and coming into what was a small, safe community for a lot of us. The irony of was that a lot of people would expend energy shitting on people for liking pop punk while knowing 'Blind' word for word.

The last few years, I've had something of a complete turnaround on the subject. I got burnt out listening to hardcore bands playing the same riffs over and over again, seeing kids with stupid asymmetrical haircuts comment on music that they couldn't possibly be old enough to experience or appreciate; on one level it was probably partially me seeing a reflection of myself at that same age (my hair was never that bad), and realizing how arrogant I must have sounded.

On another level, pop punk has an energy that I hadn't experienced in a lot time. It is exceptionally tiring listening to the same old hardcore bands playing the exact same style, and wasting time posturing and lecturing others in an attempt to maintain 'credibility'. Pop punk, comparatively, is just fun.

Josie- Blink 182

This track rules. It's really poppy, and there are better examples of pop punk out there, but I can't pretend I don't like this song.

I'm probably coming at this from a strange perspective, since I got into punk via tracing a chronology of influence back from a lot of the music that followed on from it, but I actually think Enema of the State is a pretty good album. Of course, I'm not quite old enough to remember anyone actually being into it at the time, so maybe that helps.

Flogging Molly and the Dropkick Murphys are a disease. Some of the douchebaggiest music ever made.

Blood Visions is a great album. Jay had a long career stretching back to when he was like fifteen.

There's his first & namesake band, the Reatards:

The Reatards - "Stacye" (Teenage Hate - LP)

The Reatards - "Sick When I See" - (Grown Up, Fucked Up - LP)

And then there's the synthed-madness of Lost Sounds:

Lost Sounds - And You Dance

Lost Sounds - I Get Nervous

His solo synth punk project Terror Visions is notable, too:

Terror Visions (Jay Reatard) - "World of Shit"

I could go on and on really. Homeboy was crazy prolific.

Know what the saddest part is? Dropkick Murphys used to be fairly decent. Everything post-Gang's All Here is absolute rubbish, though, so just be glad you don't live anywhere near Boston and have to hear that horrible fucking "Shipping Out to Boston" monstrosity on a consistent enough basis. I'm still happy that the Bruins didn't adopt that horrible "Go, Go, Black and Gold" tune they wrote for them.

The only Dropkick Murphy related enjoyment I've ever gotten was when some TSMer (possibly Czech) joked that "State of Massachusetts" was based on TaigaStar.

It can be annoying in the wrong context. Someone tried to start a moshpit at a HEALTH concert I got free tickets for. Kind of made a ridiculous experience even stupider.
