That's not even Dreamer's best self-harm promo.

Whenever I see chatter about Dreamer a being a bad babyface? I remember this promo and roll my eyes.

John Arezzi's podcast on Thursday is going to be a repeat of his episode following the 1994 NWA World Title Tournament at the ECW Arena where Shane Douglas threw down the belt. Paul Heyman, Shane Douglas and Dennis Corralluzzo are interviewed on the episodes.

Plus it'll include chintzy 1994 AM talk radio ads.

At least that kid has a hell of a story, "Buh Buh Ray threatened to kick my mother in the cunt."

Reminds me of when that drunk shithead started booing during a 10-bell for Eddy Guerrero at a CZW show. Security literally had to escort him out because Eddie Kingston was trying to get at him.

And Paul Heyman gave him $40 (or whatever 2x the cost of an ECW front row ticket was in '99)!

I feel like it was handled relatively well considering the circumstances considering how legitimately ripshit Bubba, D'Von, and the crowd looked. I'm amazed that the fan didn't scurry away sooner (but I guess he was tactless enough to heckle a ten bell salute). I've nearly pooped my pants anytime on the 1-2 instances where I've been in the way . Sami Callihan actually physically shoved me out of the way at a Limitless show once LOL.

Especially an ECW show. New Yorkers are built differently, I guess.

ECW @ Queens, NY - Elks Lodge - April 24, 1999
ECW - 4/29/99: Nova pinned Little Guido (w/ Sal E. Graziano)
ECW - 4/29/99: Jerry Lynn pinned Taka Michinoku
Yoshirhiro Tajiri & Spike Dudley defeated Super Crazy & El Mosco
ECW - 4/29/99: Tommy Dreamer (w/ Francine) defeated Lance Storm
Skull Von Crush defeated Danny Doring
Balls Mahoney defeated New Jack
ECW - 5/6/99: ECW TV Champion Rob Van Dam (w/ Bill Alphonso) defeated ECW Tag Team Champion Buh Buh Ray Dudley (w/ Joel Gertner, Sign Guy & ECW Tag Team Champion D-Von Dudley)

Looking at the card, Jerry Lynn Vs Taka Michinoku and maybe Tajiri & Spike Vs Super Crazy & El Mosco seem like the type of matches a mom could appreciate but that's about it.

My mom watched wrestling with me, but she hated ECW. It wasn't the violence or the language, necessarily (though she didn't care much for Gertner), it was all the T&A.

My dad, though, still has some love for the Sandman and Rhino.

Sandman/Sabu Stairway To Hell is a favorite match of mine just because of how into it my dad gradually got and how repulsed my mom perpetually got.

My mom never got the wrestling thing but my dad did watch with me a bit. The highlight being him getting really excited for a Goldberg/Flair Nitro main event in 1999.

RIP Epic Sr.

Afaik my dad never saw ECW but he might have liked it? Parts of wrestling he enjoyed were the goofier/comedy aspects and he is a fan of '70s/'80s horror and exploitation movies. Shoot. Maybe I should see if he wants to go to GCW in Providence with me on Father's Day!

Don't worry, @Laz . I'm not that terrible of a son. I'll probably buy us tickets to go see KC & The Sunshine Band at the Casino Ballroom. Probably won't even get into a drunken brawl afterward unless that's what he wants.

I just found out that Mikey Whipwreck was 25 YEARS OLD when he jumped to WCW.

He was only 19 when he won the ECW title. I always thought he never got the recognition he deserved when it comes to the young world champs conversation.

I would say he was more of a gimmick than of a guy who was an exploding star.
- Tommy Rich was the hottest star on WTBS (making his title win/loss happening between tapings seem weird)
- Kerry VE was a phenom in many areas, but his ties to WCCW and drug issues shot his stardom down.
- Thesz was a shooter who was groomed for 4 years before he started at 17 and began his world title dominance by his very early 20s.
- Brock/Orton were both hand picked stars from pretty much day one, although it took Orton a few extra twists to get there, whereas Brock was pretty much smashed over (as Corny likes to phrase it).

I view Whipwreck more like a situation like had the 123 Kid actually beat Bret on RAW in July of 1994 (maybe as a backdoor way to get Owen the title and heat up Summerslam's Hart vs Hart?) In other words... an underdog who gets a run that isn't really meant to move him up w/the headliners.

Why are you booing him? He's right.
Because Whipwreck was a blip on the overall wrestling radar compared to other young world champions, per the question.

Whipwreck's arch was neat but his career meant little to history. At the point he won the title, ECW was still pre-PPV, but in the midst of their creative stride.

ECW lifestyle is even more hardcore than I thought.

What makes even less sense than his age was that him, and Kidman had a dynamite match that night. Then he was stuck with Van Hammer, and Villano matches after that.

The underdog gimmick was a good one for him, but he ended up as a solid worker. Never was going to be a top guy, but does good work, makes others look better, and no one really says bad things about him.
