Phi Delta Slam were so awful. By far one of the worst signings of the time.
And the worst thing is they gave them a return/repackage in '09 when TNA was exponentially more popular. I remember one of the rare times I tuned into the show before I became a regular follower a few years later did happen to be a Matt Morgan Vs Main Event Mafia Security match. It was exact wrong point to tune in and it really kind of enforced the worst stereotypes about TNA. A WWE stiff washout slowly beating up some fat security guards.

Screw that! I can watch Shane McMahon feud with Randy Orton on RAW!

Maybe it was the year it was on Pursuit but I don’t think you can be an indie and be on cable channels that most people can get. Although that qualifier seems kind of outdated in 2022.

I clicked my heels and said "2004 TNA" five times and now AXSTV is showing Victory Road 2004 to start their Impact Wrestling block this afternoon. A rare moment when I wish I still had cable (or my Impact Plus subscription).

Sabin is one of those guys who should've been a bigger deal, because he had so much raw talent so early on (and delivered some greatness during his first year in TNA), but the injury bug always bit at the worst moments and, for whatever reason, every company with TV hated tag teams.

Sabin was misused literally from his start as S.E.X's X Division representative. At least, in a rare, stunning moment of self awareness, Impact recognized all of the misused potential and gave him that "Sorry. Our bad!" brief run with the World Title in 2013ish.

And, hey, Sabin's still only in his early forties so I hold out hope that he could still get a real main event run with Impact, worthy of all of the talent and effort he's put in last two decades.

(Now lineup that football, Lucy, I think I can kick it...)

He never got the singles career he should've. I remember him feuding with Petey for a little while, then AJ went back down to the X-Division and I don't remember Sabin ever doing anything else of note at the time.

MCMG needed to have Nash manage them.

Even though he is a former World Champion, he's definitely up there for most forgettable NWA/TNA/Impact World Heavyweight title runs with Mick Foley, Pentagon Jr, and Rhino.

Shamrock's up there too but he has distinction of being the first at least.

I dunno, people were pretty stoked when he won (even if they bitched that he didn't win it the way they wanted). Foley's run is notoriously baffling, Rhino's is kind of historically significant given the circumstances and event, and Penta's one of the times the right guy was in the right place at the wrong time (his winning was the first I heard a lot of people care about the company in a long time).

I forget Abyss and Storm touched the main title sometimes. Hell I only remember Eric Young getting it because he had a beard at the right time.

Yeah. Eli Drake has a case since I didn't include him in my initial post about forgettable champions.

I also forget that Abyss actually had the World Title for a month or two.

That's when they were still doing traditional NWA rules where titles can change on a DQ so he won it from Sting that way. Then he dropped it to Christian.

I never liked Eli Drake and that is almost entirely because people who just say their name over and over as a catchphrase piss me off. Even worse when they're the ultimate sign of change like he was. Such a step down.

They're giving me good reason not to reup my Impact Plus subscription.

The one TNA PPV @BruiserBrody might be interested in.
That went like zero percent like how I remembered it. I legit recalled Savage just coming down to the ring and cradling JJ right away.
Crowd seemed indifferent to the Macho one.

I always forget that Macho Man didn't even main event the one TNA show he was on. One of the legendary Triple X-AMW cage matches did. I can see people questioning it at the time but Double J or Dutch Mantell or whoever was booking obviously made the right decision there.

Should've just put the belt on Savage. Would've made no difference, and the match would be terrible, but it's Savage. Would've made the bitterness of the Monty Brown experience a little potent to me.

I still would like to find the random squash matches Savage taped in an empty gym to try and entice people to a paid subscription to Machoman.com. I wonder if Lanny has them? The only match I remember is Pat Tanaka vs Savage.

Uhhhh....obscure wrestling stuff you think about too often crosspost.

You’re right. Knowing what we know now and even knowing what we knew in ‘04, there would have been absolutely no harm in Macho Man getting a fluke win over Double J then vacating the title immediately after. It would’ve been a nice minor boost to everyone.

Savage was the biggest name they'd actually gotten to appear, and it definitely wouldn't have hurt business with him getting a spot for a brief period. They were ready to work with Hogan, should work with Savage. Especially since Savage would 100% have not used them for leverage with Vince.
