Russia Invades Ukraine

Besides authoritarians and galaxy brained troll weirdos*, I don't see this war being popular with anyone. Silver lining is I feel like this is the beginning of the end for Putin.

And tbh, I think last night's events turned a lot of the far left brained weirdos I was talking about earlier ITT. I think there was/is definitely a "I didn't think he was actually going to go through with it!" mindset.

I said this before, but outside of like Czechia and Slovakia, you'd be hard pressed to find two populations less interested in going to war against one another than Russia and Ukraine.

Definitely scary stuff. It seems like the world just fell apart starting in 2020. So any chance this doesn't lead to World War III and Putin halts at Ukraine/Moldova instead of invading the Baltics/Poland?

I don't know if I want to give Putin credit for that much logic.

Yeah, I agree with CWM that I don't *think* Putin will invade a NATO country but I didn't think he'd launch an invasion at this scale of Ukraine so Idk. Regardless of how this war turns out, it's his last stand and it's obvious he's going out throwing haymakers.

I guess what will be interesting over the coming months is what China's involvement will be. Are they willing to risk their potential #1 world superpower status on the line to back Putin in a. fight against NATO? Probably not but maybe?

He's already threatening nuclear usage and it's not empty. He's the kind of guy who if he doesn't get what he wants will try to take everything and everyone he possibly can down with him. He's an idiot and his military is not good so he won't be successful, which means...yea. hopefully he can be contained before he does too much damage, I have a feeling he will end up nuking someone though.

So much for stopping at Ukraine. He's really intent on starting World War III, isn't he?

I take casualty figures with a grain of salt generally but its very clear this is not going well for Russia. The people of Russia are being very vocal in speaking out which was not expected at all. Ukrainians are uniting in opposition. It's day 3 and all major cities are still free which again was not expected.

Armor and air losses are a little less fudgible than manpower losses but, yeah, Ukraine is putting up a hell of a fight so far.

I haven’t been able to read about it a ton but it seems like their ability to keep the aerial attacks virtually out of the equation is allowing them to just destroy the fuck out of the invaders on the ground. Not sure how long that can last because of sheer numbers or if missiles get launched from afar, but this has been a surprising outcome in the early days.

I think motivation has to play into it too. A country defending its democracy with everything its got versus a bunch of poor Russian conscripts that have been sitting in the cold for weeks.

agreed but there ahve been several times so far where they initially identified them as russian losses and then realized it was Ukrainian etc. Also a lot of footage out there from other conflicts.
