I guess it is not a TV since it doesn't have a tuner, which is why they call it a display, but it will work with none Playstation inputs. Although I've read that people have had problems with some none Playstation devices using HDMI cables and that Sony may be using some weird HDMI tech that isn't the norm. From the reviews I've read the picture quality is really good, the 3d is good, and the multiplayer with no split screen thing is good too. The main problems seems to be
a. It has an auto-off feature that likes to turn off way too quickly when no source is detected, and since
b. IT DOESN'T COME WITH A GOD DAMNED REMOTE you have to crawl up to the TV and turn it back on. Seriously, no remote? Yes it's not a 'TV', but not having to go over to the TV to change the volume/change inputs/turn the damn thing back on would be nice.
c. Glare. If you aren't sitting with a straight on view you're going to get glare, really badly. So the device was hyped for multiplayer gaming, but to do that effectively you're gonna have to sit in your bro's lap so you aren't just looking at your reflection.
d. Only comes with one set of glasses. The whole hype behind this thing is 'play multiplayer games without split screen' and you can't do that out of the box.
e. Price. $500 for a 23.5 inch screen with all the problems listed above. $570 if you want to buy it and get a second pair of glasses.
I was hyped for this after E3, thinking it'd be a good cheaper 3D TV, but I am so glad I didn't rush out and buy it at launch. I guess when they said it would be the ultimate dorm room display, what they meant was it's gonna good in a dorm room.
Edit: Oh and in addition to no remote, all the buttons are apparently on the back, so you have to reach behind it to change inputs or mess with display settings. WTF?
