Sports Broadcasting/Anchors/Media Thread

They were also about to lose Greg Olsen who they had to keep cuz he’s actually really good and did a favor to the company to step aside.

Terry Bradshaw has announced his retirement from broadcasting. I don't watch the pre game shows much anymore but from what I saw this was the correct decision from him.

As a non football watcher, he is entertaining and watchable. Felt like the Charles Barkley of the NFL where he would say outrageous stuff, but wasn't afraid to mock and laugh at himself. Also, doesn't seem to give a shit like Barkley and will say whatever is on his mind. But, I might be wrong.

That said, both him and Jimmy Johnson came off like they should've retired years ago during the Super Bowl coverage.

Pretty big news: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6149921/2025/02/20/mlb-espn-opt-out-tv-deal/ MLB is basically pissed at the lack of coverage for its sports on the ESPN brand outside of live games, which is funny considering the regional market issues and its archaic blackout rules.

"ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball, its wild-card round playoff broadcasts and the rest of the partnership remain in place through the 2025 season.

A March 1 deadline loomed for both parties to opt out of the final three years of a contract that otherwise would have run through 2028. The broadcaster informed the league of its decision to opt out on Thursday morning, according to two people briefed on ESPN’s thinking. The league, in turn, then proceeded to say it too would opt out.

The network was due to pay the league an estimated $550 million each of the next three years, which it deemed way above the current market value, according to people briefed on the network’s thinking.

ESPN and MLB have been partners since 1990, and both sides still appear to have a continued need for the other. ESPN has put forth both national and regional programming ideas to continue working with MLB. MLB, meanwhile, could be hard-pressed to find similar dollars elsewhere. The ESPN contract, which would have lasted seven years, was agreed to in 2021.

ESPN felt the market had changed and that baseball should make adjustments accordingly. Apple is paying $85 million per year for baseball rights, while Roku is paying $10 million a season for baseball rights.

The overall male/female ratio on ESPN is 73/27 while MLB on ESPN is 68/32, with growth among women outpacing men this year. In addition, our Hispanic audience on ESPN is ~10%, significantly above most other sports on their platform. As of December 2024, ESPN was available in 53.6M homes, down from its peak of over 100M homes in 2011 and 69M homes when we struck the current deal in 2021. To that end, we have been in conversations with several interested parties around these rights over the past several months and expect to have at least two potential options for consideration over the next few weeks."

Longtime broadcaster Al Trautwig has died at age 68. He worked for the MSG network announcing Yankees/Knicks/Rangers games for years. One of the sports voices of my childhood. He also had a cameo in the movie "Cool Runnings".

RIP

Lee Corso is retiring from broadcasting. He's 89. Corso had been working at ESPN since 1987 when College Gameday debuted.

Michael Jordan will be joining NBC as a contributor/analyst for the upcoming NBA season.

We might be in line for some historic saltiness.

Bomani, who has never had an opinion that was his own is correct in that Jordan is salty and will provide his brand of it.

Naturally, you associate salty bitterness with hot takes and not being the bitter curmudgeon he’s always been.

The historic salty lack of fucks Jordan’s gonna give will rival the standard of Joe Montanas just here for money phoned in efforts as an analyst.

I’ll wait for LeBetard to “well you see actually” for Bomani to revise his next opinion.

Tiki Barber is out at CBS. Being replaced by JJ Watt. Watt will call games with Ian Eagle.

Barber will join the Giants radio team this upcoming season.

Pretty big news: https://www.nbcsports.com/pressbox/...s-partnership-featuring-extensive-exclusivity

NBC, NBCSN and Peacock to be the Exclusive Home of Sunday Night Baseball, MLB Sunday Leadoff, “Opening Day” and Labor Day Primetime Games, and ENTIRE Postseason Wild Card Round
"It will consist of 25 primetime games per year, a mixture of games on NBC/Peacock (in all available Sunday night broadcast windows) and Peacock/NBCSN exclusives. NBC Sports will bring the same production and promotional assets and philosophies to this franchise as it does for Sunday Night Football and Sunday Night Basketball.

Following each MLB Sunday Leadoff game, Peacock will stream a Sunday afternoon whip-around show with look-ins at all the live action around Major League Baseball.

NBC and Peacock will be the exclusive home of the primetime game on the first full day of games (March 26, 2026, in the first year of the agreement). In a first for MLB, there will be an exclusive Labor Day primetime game on NBC/Peacock. No other game will be played at that time.

  • NBC, NBCSN and Peacock will present live coverage of the MLB Draft (July 11, 2026)
  • NBC and Peacock will present the All-Star Futures Game (July 12, 2026)"

noted scumbag Craig Carton is returning to WFAN for a third time to take over the afternoon drive slot. WFAN is entering later day WCW territory. Carton is Vince Russo.

Not a surprise here but will be interesting to see who wins out: https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profo...re-in-play-for-special-five-game-2026-package

"Per a source with knowledge of the situation, YouTube, Netflix, and Fox are in play for the five-game mini-slate.

As we understand it, the NFL has presented a menu consisting of more than five potential games, with the bidders having the ability to pick the five specific games they want.

The options are believed to include the Week 1 game in Australia, a Thanksgiving eve game (which is not official but apparently inevitable), a second Black Friday game, and a Christmas Eve game, among others."
