Sports Cards Hobby Thread 2.0

You shouldn't have even said the stuff about $300-$350 tbh because that immediately tells him #1: You're willing to lower the price fairly drastically and #2: If you're willing to take 50% of that initial price then you can (aka will/should) go lower "for a friend" like him because he knows you. That $100 offer was a joke and I'd avoid doing any deals with him in the future as he clearly isn't interested in being fair with you. It takes two to tango/show respect to one another to make a deal. Also his not having sent the Paypal yet as payment is a red flag but I'd check up with his wife and let her know the situation ASAP before it goes too long.

I'd say in any sale, your goal is obviously 100% but your aim should be 80% minimum. The people who accept 50-70% of a "best offer" are doing a disservice to themselves. They've either way overpriced it and screwed themselves out of a realistic 'Best Offer' or they are simply taking one of the earliest offers they get, always the low balls that first come their way and not having the patience to wait it out. If you think about Auctions, nobody ever starts their bid on an item at $5,000 if the item is worth $8,000. They start at $100 or $500. Same goes for Best Offers. I had been watching a Kenny Golloday RPA a long while ago and offered $23 for it (going rate of sales then). Went up to $27 and the seller ended up selling it to somebody else for around $35, within a few $ of initial price, a week or two later IIRC so good on that seller for waiting it out and getting the $$ rather than just taking my initial offer. I've also thrown out BO not expecting them to be accepted because I knew they were pretty low ball and had them accepted. Great for me, not so much perhaps for the seller.

Example: Raw 1980-81 Bird/Johnson/Magic Separated Card. Both sales were $140. First listing was $200 (70% of initial price) and second listing was $250 (56% of initial price). The second seller screwed himself out of $35 by not targeting a minimum 70% BO. If you know roughly what a card will sell at or around, it's best to set your initial offer close to that price unless it's a hot card that you can afford to really raise the price on.

I don't know how it is on eBay or MySlabs but I'm sure there's a minimum you can set for Best Offers to screen through to avoid low ball offers.

As a heads up, there's a new 130point.com Search for Cards including MySlabs

I'm going to work on adjusting my myslabs pricing. Maybe I'll get more bites instead of hoping someone will make offers close to my real price. I appreciate the insight. One good thing about Myslabs and Ebay is you are not limited to how low you can put your auto accept in relation to your starting price, whereas facebook marketplace restricts you to only 50% of your asking price. But like HQ pointed out, if your auto accept is 50% you are doing a disservice.

I think I got that mindset from COMC as 50% was the default setting for making offers on listings so I'd always set prices as 2x what I really wanted to get. And since Myslabs doesn't restrict list price or % offered, I just accelerated my asking prices and set my auto accept lower than 50% of the starting price. I suck at business.

I've found MarketMovers to be an invaluable tool in this regard but it's also important to look at similar cards especially if you may be selling some Saints cards in popular sets e.g. your Devery Hendersons, Marques Colstons, etc. I'd also try to avoid the mindset of looking at auto accepts as "how low can I put this?" and look at it as "how high can I set this?" #1: It should get you more fair offers, #2: You should get more serious buyers/risk less return issues, etc., and #3: You'll start to get a better idea of profit margin/how often your sales are 70, 80, 90, or 100% of your offering price.

Here's a good example of a Drew Brees 2001 Topps #328 BGS 9 (caveat being subgrades mattering as you know)
21 Sales over the last 365 days excluding Probstein, PWCC, Goldin. The past 4 Auctions have seen this card selling for $96 - $120. If I were listing this card as a BIN with Best Offer, I'd probably list it at around $120. A 90% offer would be right at $108, in line with the range of sales with my target being $105 to $110. Even a "low" $95 offer would be 79% of that listed price.

10 Best Offers
- $300 sold for $200 (05/23) 67%
- $275 sold for $275 (05/03) 100%
- $260 sold for $230 (03/30) 88% *1 9.5 Subgrade*
- $350 sold for $275 (03/29) 79%
- $449 sold for $370 (03/29) 82% *2 9.5 Subgrades* ... These followed that earlier tactic I've mentioned of listing an item at a very high price in hopes of getting a higher offer than normal. The focal point though is that this sale and the below sale were still at 70%+ of the asking price.
- $499 sold for $350 (03/18) 70%
- $299.95 sold for $299.95 (01/22) 100% *10 Centering*
- $150 sold for $140 (12/20) 93%
- $150 sold for $150 (12/19) 100%

More parallel fun as the talk of the parallel craze dominates the Hobby.

2020-21 O-Pee-Chee Platinum Hockey now has 16 Parallels. 10 are Serial Numbered. New parallels = /499, /299, and /65.
2021 Topps Archives Baseball now has 8 Parallels. Foil finishes have been added for the /150, /50, /25, /15, and 1/1s.
2021 Topps Triple Threads Baseball now has 11 Parallels (Ruby & Printing Plates are 1/1). New parallels = /150 and /125.

Also, brands like Panini & Topps are leaning into the "short print"/"case hit" (aka their SSPs)/"ultra rare" verbiage related to their products, which means jack all without a specified print run.

2020-21 Panini Chronicles Basketball has SP of Hobby Exclusive Gold Standard & Titanium cards. The Gala cards are merely described as "ultra rare"... rarer than a unicorn? Bigfoot? The foxes that traipse through my yard once every few weeks?

Those NT Patch cards of Brees & Kamara in 9.5 and 9 are pretty sick considering how hard it is to achieve those grades usually.

Yeah NT is super difficult. 2007 is my favorite set ever and also consistently the hardest grade ever. I think I have ONE gem from 2007 NT. I can probably pay for 1/2 the sub by selling the 2017 Brees patch. I threw it up on Myslabs to see if I get any nibbles. I have to be really selective about selling things from my registry, though.
My guy with proper ins at Beckett (not my Facebook guy) is using his contacts to continue to sub his stuff and sneaks a pair of Brees cards in for me twice a month. I have to continue the charade that they're his, and he sells them "to my Brees guy" so they can't wind up for sale on my accounts.
I can only sell the ones that popped in 2019 or that come from the Facebook guy.

When I do my writeup for Brad's newsletter tomorrow (which be sent out Thu/Fri), I'm gonna be looking at Fred McGriff's only RC - 1986 Donruss vs. his 1987 Donruss & 1987 Topps Traded.

I always find these kinds of cases fascinating in terms of a card made pre-MLB experience, a card made during a player's rookie year such as McGriff, and cards made the year after that actually feature his initial major league stats on the back. As 1 of just 3 owners in the world of a PSA 9 1997 Donruss Vladimir Guerrero Card, I think this really makes for an interesting discussion when compared to 50s/60s/70s era cards and when they were produced.

Spinning off the previous, above post, I did another 25 cards buy for about $54. Picked up a lot of these raw for dirt cheap ($0.50 - $0.85) just because I like them. I also picked up a ton of 1999 Mark McGwire cards with a lot of them celebrating the '98 Home Run Chase. As a big fan of baseball history, I look at these types of cards as a kind of historical "written on cardboard" artifact and a cool way to highlight that history for our generation of baseball fandom.

1993 Chipper Jones: SP #280 [Foil], Upper Deck #24
1997 Mariano Rivera: Bowman #27, Donruss Elite #118, SP #127, Stadium Club #11

Picked up a 1st year 1994 Topps Future Star Manny Ramirez in a PSA 9 for $17.99 with free shipping. Just 27 graded in a PSA 9. I'm "old school" in my rookie collecting in that the card should be at least the player's true rookie season in their pro league or include their stats on the back e.g. Nolan Ryan's 1969 Topps.

The $17.99 is a great price tag IMO as it's less than getting the card raw/submitting myself, its already in a PSA slab, and it's a cool Manny Ramirez card if nothing else. I've also found myself generally preferring to snag "junk wax" cards in slabs where I can as I know how high the print runs were + getting cards for $15-$25 helps as PSA/BGS/SGC/CSG should not rise too much in card submissions down the road.

PSA 1995 Derek Jeter cards are now going for $175+ and even PSA 1996 Chipper Jones 'base' cards are going for $25-$40 depending on the card.

EDIT: Also won a 1996 Collector's Choice Derek Jeter PSA 9 for $9.99 (+$3.99 shipping) in an auction as the only bid. Just 65 graded in a 9, 103 in a 10.

Went have a few beers/sell some cards to a couple friend of mine (I sold them Christmas presents for their family). They've known me for 17 years and I'm not shy about my hobby. Once again they brought up a relative that was born and died in the 1940s leaving behind baseball cards to their dad (the dad's twin), the cards were in a hidden compartment in the Grandfather's house, etc.... Babe Ruth, other hall of fame players. Everything about the story points to not reprints and no point in history should the items have been altered or damaged. And once again, "as soon as we find the cards we need you to appraise them." I wanna see the cards dammit, this 17 year cock tease is getting to me.

Hearing born and died in the 1940s and Babe Ruth I showed them a 33 Goudy on my phone, they can't confirm if that's the one they saw when the cards were last seen in the 1990s. Asked about other players to give me an idea of contemporaries and cards available at that time. "Not sure." Can confirm nothing Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron, nor Honus Wagner. He said, "no" also to Gehrig and Dimaggio. I reached for off the wall odd ball names that just popped in my head in the moment to shrugs. He thinks its a smaller square card than the normal sized cards I sold him, but not T206 small.

But now that they're buying cards for their people, the hobby is bustling, and we have a shop again, there's a renewed interest for them to find the cards and have me inspect them and direct to the best grading company. I told them under no circumstance was I going to sit by and let them just throw a 33 Goudy in a binder or top loader and I'll grade it at my expense and insurance out of sheer concern for such an important piece of sports history IF that's what they have in the family. I'm keeping healthy doubt until I'm in their living room with the loot in front of me.

I also showed them all the usual suspects when it comes to Ruth cards from his playing days - 1933 and nothing set off the lightbulb. When I got home it struck me that he might be describing 48 Leaf, but that doesn't add up for the dead twin's DOB - DOD. I really hope for their sake they do find this collection and that it really does contain all of these holy grails. It'd be my damn honor to guide them through grading and preserving them for their kids. I just want to be in the presence of such awesomeness.

Do they still own/have access to the house with the hidden compartment? Did the Dad ever take them out of that house/has them in his possession now? Weird story. If the Dad never took them out, that's a little odd/suspicious IMO considering his twin gave them to him.

I know I had cards from as early as 1989 (Donruss & Upper Deck) and 1990 (Donruss as I specifically recall the Steve Avery Rated Rookie & Fleer & Topps) when I was only 4 and 5 years old those years so I'm pretty sure my Uncle/Dad was getting them for me.

There are a bunch of oddball Ruth cards from "unknown" brands from 1930 - 1939 that could easily be one of his that would be the equivalent of the 90s Toys R' Us or such style card releases. Most were either cigarette brands or even cereal/food-related not unlike say the '91 Jimmy Dean, Kelloggs, or Mother's Cookies releases. I'd be very surprised if it was a '33 Goudey in particular that they had as it seems like the family would know pretty instantly if it was that card. TCDB.com has a vast majority of pictures if you wanted to print them out and kind of go "police ID" format with them.

1933 Goudey (RC, 1st Card in Set but he has 4 total in set IIRC), 1934 Goudey World-Wide Gum, 1935 Goudey 4-1, 1943 Baseball Magazine Player Posters, 1947 NBC Dupont Calvalcade of America BR Premium

Did the following quick order for about $73. Really trying to target the top-tier "career" QBs and that 2000-2007 era, when cards were printed less and serial numbered cards were just starting to consistently get into that lower /50 to /150 type range. Also, fewer of those boxes are being ripped so I think long-term, those kinds of cards will be tougher to obtain in just 5 years. I do like the /500 and /1000 cards sometimes too, especially in light of people getting excited over /499 or /999 Rookie Cards.

2001 Pacific Invincible /1000 - Brett Favre ($2.20)
2002 Fleer Premium All-Pro Team /1000 - Brett Favre ($3)
2003 Leaf Limited /999 - Barry Sanders ($3.30)
2004 Donruss Elite Career Best /1650 - Barry Sanders ($2.75) - Note: I just liked the look/design of this card.
2004 Fleer Tradition Crystal /150 - Drew Brees ($7.20)
2005 Donruss Gridiron Gear Gold Holofoil /100 - Drew Brees ($5.50)
2005 Leaf Rookies and Stars Longevity Gold /199 - Brett Favre ($4.40)
2005 Throwback Threads Gridiron Kings Bronze /500 - Jerry Rice ($3.30)
2006 Absolute Memorabilia Tools of the Trade Black /50 - Drew Brees ($9)
2006 Donruss Classics Timeless Tributes Bronze /100 - Drew Brees ($10.50)
2006 Flair Showcase Gold /99 - Philip Rivers ($3.60)
2009 Certified Mirror Blue /100 - Ben Roethlisberger ($5)
2009 Donruss Rookies and Stars Longevity Sapphire /75 - Ben Roethlisberger ($3)
2009 Playoff Prestige Xtra Points Orange /300 - Matt Ryan ($1.50)
2010 Absolute Memorabilia Spectrum Silver /50 - Matt Ryan ($2.50)
2011 Limited Silver Spotlight /50 - Matt Ryan ($3)
2014 Panini Contenders Playoff Ticket /199 - Ben Roethlisberger ($3) - Note: I like jumping on these #'d Contenders cards because boxes are so notoriously hard to get even just decent hits from.

Chasing Mac Jones Rookies and DACW had their 1st Wave of Black Friday deals out so I picked up 5x 60 Card 2021 Panini Prestige Hanger Boxes (Astral Parallel) at $14.95 each and 2x 30 Card Panini Prestige Jumbo Value Packs (Sunburst Parallel) at $14.95 each.

So that's 360 Cards at about $105 ($0.29/Card), which I can stomach.

The last I heard, after my friend's dad died somewhere around 2011 they set out to get the cards but they're not sure if he took them out of the hidden compartment or not. Someone in the family still lives in that house but they have concerns that a less scrupulous family member may have gotten their hands on the cards. I also, five or so years ago, heard a version of events where someone put all of the dad's stuff in a garbage bag outside in the rain, ruining everything. But that version of events did NOT come up last night.

I sent the guy a photo of the Leaf last night after I made the above post, he's still not sure. It probably will be an odd ball item like you suggested, hopefully it won't take me too long to research it so they'll know what they have. I've offered to do an intense scan for them, so it'll probably be a matter of me bringing the scanner to them. I'm not driving away with a Ruth. I have to cross 3 bodies of water to get to them and then go home and then back. I am not running the risk of wrecking.

Interesting stuff. If it's not still stashed in the compartment (would the family member who's still living there have already looked?), I'd definitely lean towards a family member bogarting with the cards and having them stashed (if not already sold) somewhere else, considering how long it has been family lore/legend apparently + the rumors of the collection containing a Ruth card alone. Given COVID and the craze of the sports card market in general, it would've been an incredibly opportune time for that person to just sell them.

There were 20 boxes of cards, coming in at a weight of 7.6 tons. The cards were reportedly bound for the Netherlands and were manufactured by a company in China’s Qingdao province. Yicai calls it “one of the biggest fake IP hauls in recent years.”

The Pokémon Company sold 3.7 billion Pokémon cards during the 2020-2021 fiscal year, which amounts to 10.8 percent of all Pokémon cards ever sold, according to NintendoLife. That number only accounts for official sales, too: Rare, powerful, and popular cards are often sold secondhand through outlets like eBay and Facebook Marketplace, meaning that the actual number of cards purchased last year is likely even higher.

I stumbled upon this in looking up year-by-year cards for Kobe & Durant but Panini cut their NBA sets from 12 in 2010-11 to just 5 in 2011-12. Potentially sneaky year to target serial numbered cards?

Drew Brees also has just 160 cards for the 2004 season, which surprised me. He started 11 games in 2003, going a miserable 2-9 but that still seems abnormally low.

Do top loaders and/or one-touch cases in sizes bigger than 130 pt and smaller than 180 pt exist? If so, where the fuck can I buy them? I have had zero luck finding any.

I'm sick of getting cards that won't fit in a 130 but have too much room in a 180 that they can move all over the place in a one-touch or go flying out of a top loader the first chance they get.

I don't think so. I haven't found any cases for most of the Historic Autographs booklet releases either. It's annoying.

Everything I've seen was either 130 point or 180 point on Amazon.

I've found when those cards arrive, too big for 130, too small for 180, the seller sticks pieces of packing peanuts in the damn one touch or top loader. Doubt that's the solution you want.

For me, when I come across extremely thick cards, I try to move them rather than keep them in my PC. Any player. Especially with grading being cost prohibitive now, even if the BGS/PSA cases of the world could fit it it, I'm on hold with those.

I also turn down trade/purchase offers for booklet and larger sized cards. Anything I have 5x7 or larger that is autographed, and the only autograph I have of that player, I will GLADLY trade for a standard dimensioned trading card.

Thanks guys. I assumed that was the answer but figured I'd ask the experts. The majority of my really thick cards aren't ones I keep out for display so I end up using a 180 top loader and just praying I remember to be careful whenever I take it out. But on Wednesday I pulled a Panini Chronicles America's Pastime Acuna auto that is jussssttttttt too big to fit in a 130 top-loader (the thing actually closes but comes open super easy and I don't want to damage the card if the case is too small) and that fucker must be displayed in my office to help me get through the days.

Didn't bother with the Any Given Sunday or Highlight Reel Inserts as I'm not a fan of those. For $15 per, I really enjoyed doing this. The Season's Greetings Inserts are really cool in-person, same for the Heroes Inserts and I dig the Youth Movement Inserts too. Didn't hit on MAC but did get a couple PC Rookies in Rhamondre Stevenson and Christian Barmore.

Some observations: The packs without a Kid Reporter (just another base card as the last card) gave me my numbered hits, while the two packs with a Kid Reporter as the bottom card gave me the Heroes Inserts (Hanger Box only).

For $100, it was worth it. 3 PC Hits (2 Rookies) + Patriots Base Cards, 3 Season's Greetings Inserts, 2 Heroes Inserts one of which was QB Josh Allen(!), and 3 Numbered Cards.

2 Value Packs - 30 Cards Each
Xtra Points Sunburst Parallels: Tyler Boyd, Dyami Brown [RC], George Kittle, Simi Fehoko [RC]
Power House Insert: Devin White, Nick Bosa
Living Legends Insert: Daunte Culpepper
Prestigious Pros Insert: Drew Brees
Season's Greetings Insert: Terrace Marshall Jr [RC]
Rookies: Jaelan Phillips, Rhamondre Stevenson [PC Hit], Rashawn Slater, D'Wayne Eskridge, Penei Sewell, Tommy Tremble, Kwity Paye, Caleb Farley

5 Hanger Boxes - 60 Cards Each
Xtra Points Starburst Parallels: Jamal Adams, Marquez Stevenson [RC], Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Budda Baker, DK Metcalf, Michael Pittman Jr, Jerry Jeudy, Fred Warner, Jared Goff, Sam Darnold, Kareem Hunt, Travis Kelce, Stephon Gilmore [PC Hit]

The (break it down *crotch chop*) of 2021 Panini Prizm Football

Suggested Retail Price = $325 (lol)

440 Card Base Set [330 Veterans, 110 Rookies]. Personally, I love big base sets so I'm all for this. More players included, the better. Considering there were 259 players drafted, I do wish they included more rookies but it seems most brands are pretty limited in that aspect.

1 Box = 12 Packs, 12 Cards per Pack. 24 Rookies (2 per Pack), 5 Inserts, 10 Serial #'d Parallels, and 4 Silver Prizms (1:6 Packs so again not rare but shoot 'em to the moon!).

So a rough Box Break = 144 Cards. 99 Base Cards. 24 Rookies. 10 #'d Parallels. 5 Inserts. 4 Silver Prizms. 2 Autos.

New Inserts = Manga (would be cooler if they had legit Manga artists draw them tbh), Prizm Break, and New Recruits.

Another fantastic video from Karl Jobst. WATA also finally released pop reports (as of 1 month ago) and those are definitely gonna be climbing.

My Card Shack order came :) Also, unfortunately, the PSA 9 Manny Ramirez came but was cracked all to hell to the point I basically had to just pull the card out as raw :( Wasn't the fault of the seller as my Oasis CD also had a good hairline crack in it and that came from Amazon so the USPS did a shitty job of trying to not throw bigger boxes onto smaller ones apparently.
