Just getting peace at any cost, to ensure what he believes to be a better future for him, Padme, and their children, would have worked fairly well I think. It gives him a sympathetic motive beyond just protecting his family (achieving order for everyone in the galaxy) and would help to explain why the guy's such a complete bastard later even to his own men (Vader won't tolerate failure in the war against the Rebellion, not when galactic peace is at stake.)

Actually, they did this with the Legacy of the Force storyline with Jacen Solo in the EU.

EU blows the movies out of the water though, so its unfair to mention them next to the movies. Its like forcing homeless people to live under the shadow of Bill Gates' house. I wish I hadn't stopped reading the EU, stopped around the time New Jedi exploded into 23 books.

CBright, how can R2 use his rockets if he's actually inside the swamp? My thought? He must have been somewhat demodified somewhere down the line. Maybe because of his habit for wandering?
Those answers seem totally plausible.

So, how about that CGI Clone Wars series, huh? Am I the only one that enjoys the hell out of it? The movie certainly wasn't a fair representation of how good the first season really was IMO.

It seemed ok, but I think the less they plug between the new movies and the older movies the better... well, actually no, that's not true, just the less Lucas is allowed to mess with the universe the better. As mentioned above EU is amazing and well created, sure Lucas has to agree to any changes, but he doesn't actually make the changes which is great.

I wouldn't mind seeing the EU starting with the first novel (in chronological order) made in to an ongoing animated series.

That would be back to back years worth of series, even played non stop! It would be great to see it animated, but then again I'm not sure, as I'm sure they'd totally screw it up somehow :(

Oh they'd have to trim a lot of fat...picture the X-Men Animated Series way of handling several comic storylines. Changing things here, there, condensing.

Actually, now you've used the X-Men animated series as a base of style, I can see it working a lot better. Though, I never read the X-Men Comics so I'm not sure how irritated X-Men fans were with the Animated series version of events. I think they'd have to include a lot of Timothy Zahn's books/series as they were pretty fundamental in setting the EU.

The Xwing books would probably be the easiest to translate into a cartoon. Or just skip right to when the Jedi kids (Jacen/Jaina) started at Luke's academy.

Truth be told I'm surprised no one's jumped at the chance to adapt the Young Jedi Knights series into a cartoon. Decent amount of stories and would likely play well with the kid set.

Yeah. I read most of them at one point where I'd read anything Star Wars related and they were pretty good as far as young adult stuff goes.

Clearly the best EU novels are The Glove of Darth Vader and Zorba the Hutt

I just can't get why out of all the Star Wars films to work with, it seems all anyone wants to make video games and TV series out of are Episode 2 and the bridge from that to Episode 3. I get a little tired of seeing young Anakin running around with some orange girl. Lets bridge Episodes 3 and 4 already.

My ranking
VI - I have no problem with the Ewoks what so ever, and the space battles here are great.
III - Would have ranked higher if not for Natalie Portman's "dialing-it-in" performance, and of course, NOOOOOOOOOO!
IV
V - Never felt the love for this one, and the Dagobah training bores me to tears.

With Empire, the revelation scene is just so powerful you can't help but rank that Episode so high. We all know it's coming, we've seen it a million times, but when I go through my once a year viewing of all the movies, I still get goosebumps watching it. That may be the one and only time the acting, story and directing clicked 100% in any of the Star Wars films. Vader's delivery was powerful, Hamill's reaction was genuine and non-hammy, everything just works there.

A scene that always moves me from Ep. 3 is when Anakin and Padme are both looking out of the window, Padme worrying about Anakin, Anakin obviously running the gammit of emotions, a slight operatic tune playing in the background, and then the moment Anakin makes his final decision to go help Palpatine.

Ep. 6...when you can actually see Vader decide enough is enough, he's going to save his son from Palpatine, it's hard not to let out an "oh shit, son, it's on". You can almost see him saying those very words through his helmet!

I have a feeling that, due to the upcoming TV series, this era is off limits for now.

Is the TV series still going ahead? I thought it was shelved. And force unleashed sorta bridges some of the gap.

Not sure its been in development for nearly 3 years now, with the last I heard that it was suppose to be out Summer 09.

IMBD says: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0458291/
Wiki says: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars_live-action_TV_series

Not sure if I want it to follow established characters, or expand on minor ones/new ones reflecting what happens around them based on the major characters we know. But then, would anyone watch that?

From what I hear, Boba Fett's supposed to be a big part of the TV series. I'm not so sure how I feel about that. I never really cared much for him, since if you only go by the movies as canon and ignore whatever AWESOME SHIT~ he did in the EU or whatever, he kind of comes in and goes out like a bitch. Accepting that, you're going to build up his character knowing that he essentially just trips and gets eaten by a big fucking sandworm later on? Kind of a bad way to go out.

I agree except for the part about Hamill's reaction. That was every bit as bad as Vader's "Noooooooo" in Ep. III, just without the robotic JEJ voice to go with it.

I usually hate any of the Anakin/Padme scenes, but that wasn't too bad. Nowhere near as goosebump-inducing as the whole part leading up to and after "Execute Order 66", which is just filled with so much awesomeness.

I got chills watching the Order 66 montage in Episode 3. Seeing all the Jedi get gunned down by their own Clone Troopers was really powerful. Especially Aayla Secula (sp?, the female Jedi who looked to be of the same race as Bib Fortuna), who was shot about 20 times by her troops. Yoda's subsequent owning of the troops under his command, and hand-swipe dispatching of Palpatine's guards was ultra badass. Episode 6 is my favorite almost solely from Vader's redemption.

Twi'lek.

Yoda owning the Red Guards- who, in the EU, are built up to be the ultimate bad-ass warriors, on par with Jedi- got a huge cheer.

To be fair you're not far wrong when you say the EU made Fett what he is 'today'. If anything Lucas has seemingly tried to make him a shit character whenever he's touched him - changing his voice, making him the father of clones, his shitty clone son, shitty way to die, etc.

In the ROTJ commentry he mentions he would have added a scene where boba gets out of the sarlac pit if hed known how popular the character would become...

Then he made every stormtrooper boba fett.

Well the son for a Clone bit was, but the rest of it still stands. Perhaps I should have said a Cloned son, they never should have changed his voice though.

Yeah, Star Wars is definitely one of those things that has to hit you at the right age. I was nine or ten when the Special Editions came out so it did for me. I was obsessed for a few years but I guess the prequels and adolescence lessened that for me.

I disagree. I did see ROTJ at the drive-in in 1997 and didn't understand any of it. That aside, I never saw any of the movies until the DVD set came out in 2004. I was 20 years old. That was when I fell in love with Star Wars.

I really need to go back and finish KOTR, and read some of the EU books.

I still laugh that all the bad guys have cool English accents. I'm sure there's a Professor out there that has correlated Star Wars into a Metaphor of the British Empire across the world that was destroyed during the American War of Independence or something...

---

KotoR has some of the best pre-Star Wars lore around, its fresh, open and so far ahead of Battle of Yavin that it can do what it wants without rocking the George Lucas boat. As for the EU books, don't be overwhelmed as theres loooooooaooooooaooaoaooaoaods of them, wookiepedia should have a list of which ones to read in order. If you're still struggling I'm sure we'll have our own list of books to read!

Actually, talking about the EU, it was Shadow of the Empire that got me into EU, as they gave half the book away for free as a sampler in the Official Nintendo Magazine around the time that game came out.
