Steve Jobs also was the guy who pretty much invented the first personal computer, so I think that should count for something, even if he didn't play as big of a role in actually designing the iMac/iPod/iMac/iPhone... and the first PC did what many of those devices did in revolutionizing them for every day use: Making them simple, functional, and accessible to people who had or have little to no technological capability. I hated Macs until I got this philosophy of simplifying things, and surprisingly you can still geek out with the command line or whatever- OSX is essentially an overpriced, closed-source, well polished Linux distro.
There's good reason why smartphones and tablet PCs didn't take off until the iPhone and iPad came out- Apple had the financial backing and UI know-how to make them accessible to the general public for everyday personal use and not just for business use, just like Jobs did with personal computing almost 30 years before. I don't think much of Jobs personally, and I do think the outpouring of grief for him is ridiculous, but it's hard to deny a lot of what he accomplished.
That said, the worship of Apple as a company is really, really disturbing.
