Palin seems to stay quiet in general, though. Cleese being an asshole is absolutely nothing new and doesn't bother me too much. Epitome of the times changing around someone that happens to not give a fuck, and honestly he probably shouldn't. I don't begrudge the elderly guy making as much money as he can, either.

Cleese tours, though. Alley did nothing, unless I'm forgetting something.

We need a OAO Kirstie Alley thread now more than ever.

That it's an underrated rental from the mind behind the Power Rangers movie during a time the market was crying out for a voice.

He was a guest judge on Top Chef: Wisconsin a few weeks ago. I see his name on list of upcoming acts at clubs I'm featuring at but I didn't know who he was before then. It is really nice that in 2024 that there are still some hyper regionalized comedy acts plugging away and selling tickets.

I don’t get why the literal face of inoffensive comedy, who has made more money than any stand up ever is so wound up over cancel culture.

We just got finished with everyone giving CYE (created by and starring the guy who is responsible for about 95% of the money you made) its flowers and that show is your old show on steroids, bozo.

It's weird. He was born in Wisco, but lives in L.A. now. Green Bay sold 6-8000 tickets for him tonight (Resch Center was sold out with a chunk blocked off for the staging. His midwest shows seem to sell out, but he tours nationally to a degree. Crusher Country is where business booms though. 7 years ago his Green Bay show was selling for 5-10 dollars based on articles that are online. I paid 50 bucks each for pretty good seats tonight for 10 other people for their Xmas gift.
He has been touring on this "Good Old Fashioned Tour" since Sept. and we were his last stop. He had his parents in the audience, did a taped bit with his aunt and grandma, then brought them on stage. '
He showed a taped bit about fixin' a beat up snowmobile, then came on stage with the snowmobile and auctioned it off with the money going for the local VFW. I think it was supposed to be legit, but the guy who rang it up to like 6 grand was just overserved.
His most famous bit "The Manitowoc Minute" was the crowd favorite as he showed a comedic version of FUCKING WISCONSIN in headline form.
He had 2 openers, went over an hour himself, and even got the Mick Foley cheap pop by bringing out Packer HOF'er Leroy Butler at one point.

K-man, is it common for comics to show taped bits as part of the show?

It’s not uncommon for larger shows like that. You almost definitely won’t see it at a club show, probably won’t at a theater show but if you’re big enough to perform in an arena, might as well use the space and give something for people in the cheap seats

Seinfeld got dragged to hell and gone for dating the 17 year old. I can see why he'd have a thing with cancel culture.

By dragged to hell and gone, you mean having absolutely no discernible effect on his massively successful career?

Beyond a bitter feud with Bobcat Goldthwait* and a bunch of snarky comments from woke comedy dorks such as myself.

*Vale: That means EVERYTHING!

Seinfeld is literally the richest and most popular comedian of all time. Barring some VKM/Weinstein level skeletons in the closet, he is beyond cancelation. No one he knows has been canceled except Michael Richards who screamed the N word repeatedly and Kathy Griffin, who is a left winger. He is probably mad about Woody Allen. And I just remembered that time where Seinfeld was waxing nostalgic about an old Bill Cosby album and Stephen Colbert had to verbally nudge him on the shoulder and Seinfeld said that enjoying old Bill Cosby albums in 201whatever is wrong after they came back from break.

Inc: COWARD!

To be fair, and I'm not saying this in defense of him whatsoever, the 17 year old was at a time before he would be truly destroyed but was still in the tabloids for several years at his peak of popularity. Stern (who he is cool with now) dragged him for years, at times bordering on harassment. I can completely understand why he'd feel like he does. Whether he got through or it not on a media scale doesn't change how it affected him personally and he probably understands very well that he'd be run out of the business if social media existed and takes it unneccessarily personal now as a result (especially if it happens to friends/contemporaries). Make no mistake, he's an arrogant scumbag, but I can see where he's coming from even if I disagree pretty much across the board.

Also half of that panel for that stupid HBO special of the GOAT Comedians roundtable was Louis CK (who is a Seinfeld friend who has been canceled too but has also recouped a lot of money from being canceled by catering to the anti woke dinlos) and Ricky Gervais (whose entire bread and butter these days is making money by being anti woke).

Oh and Chris Rock who got slapped for a GI Jane joke.

Still. Louis CK talking about that old Boston comedian who sang a parody song called "Sittin' on a cock cause I'm gay" and Ricky keeled over with laughter is something that enters my brain at least once a month.

Isn't the general argument that the cancel culture is the opposite of comedy? That's basically how Maher frames it. Stay off college campus tours. Take a fucking joke. etc

When the creators of the US Office say they couldn't make the show today because of the culture... and so on....

Bill Maher is not a reliable source for anything.

They couldn't make The Office now because people are getting progressively more aware that almost every character is a terrible person more than anything "offensive." That and they're likely still pissed they were forced to cut that cold opening with the hanging.

People like plenty of shows where well all of the characters are terrible people. Like the most popular sitcom of all time Seinfeld.

Also a sequel/reboot of The Office is literally in production as we speak.

They're intentionally awful on Seinfeld. I've seen many people slowly realize what a piece of shit both Jim and Pam are for how they act towards practically everyone.

And of course there's a reboot. It's one of the most popular sitcoms of all time, it's a good investment and no matter what people think of any character they will watch anyway because Office fans are obsessive.

The Office still being such a loved and well remembered sitcom a decade after it went off the air is somewhat surprising considering those last few seasons weren't well recieved at all. Guess it's a testament to the amazing run it had from seasons 2-5.
