Big thanks to the NWOTHM Full Albums and New Wave of Old School Thrash Metal channels on YouTube for delivering so much content. 2022 was probably the most I've delved into new music in a decade.

Ah man, you just reminded me that Satan put out a new album this year (and that I still haven't listened to it). Also, this was the year "Court in the Act" finally came to streaming, which is awesome.

MEHgadeth.

Fuck it. I'm going to go on a Megadeth kick, album by album, and see what holds up and what doesn't. The last time I did this I appreciated Ellefson a lot more and realized how one note Mustaine was, so I wonder if I'll flip my views again.

That's funny, because I perused a book written by a metal guitarist (can't remember who) who had Mustaine as his number 1 metal guitarist of all-time.

He's a fantastic guitarist on a technical level, but his songwriting skills have always been weaker compared to a lot of other musicians of his era. Hetfield writes undeniably better songs, on average, and I'd put Hanneman over him, too. Even just comparing to other shred masters? He pales in comparison to Dime (who understood how to mix influences at a moment's notice), Vai, Yngwie, etc.

New Enslaved is a step up after their last one. Need to do a little catch up and listen to the new ones from

-Insomnium
-Hellripper
-Collab between Full of Hell and Primitive Man.

One of things I respect about Bruce Dickinson is he doesn’t ignore many if any eras of Maiden’s history. He regularly does Paul Di’Anno and even Blaze Bayley era songs. It’s refreshing with most of their contemporaries drawing from the same one or two dozen songs every tour.

No one would care if Maiden’s set list was predominantly stuff from the first 4-5 albums. Hell, it might make them more of a concert draw. Way they do their set lists is really commendable to me.

They disowned the Blaze Bayley era for a long, long time. It wasn't until 3-4 years ago that they realized "you know what, some damn good tunes were written in that time" and started adding the Clansman and Sign of the Cross to their setlists.

The only song they sing out of the D'Anno era to my knowledge was always their self-titled track. In the four times I've seen them, they've always done just that one song. I would love if they added Prowler, Running Free, and Murders in the Rue Morgue.

I guess I stand corrected. They still have a more diverse set list than most legacy acts.

Of course, downside is Bruce Dickinson knows this and rants about idiot fans who only want to hear songs from the first 4-5 albums.
