The Metal Thread - Version 2

I probably only care, but the new Deafheaven is their best since New Bermuda like a decade ago. They muted the shoegaze a little and it's damn heavy. The vocals sound great and it's the best vocal performance from George Clarke yet. They feel so much more confident and realized than their last couple of albums.

I was gonna say, it's their best in a while, and it's nice to remember that Kerry McCoy can write some impressive metal riffs in between the more post-rock/shoegaze elements.

If I do have a favorite so far this year, it's probably the new (and possibly final) Pissgrave album, followed by the new Havukruunu.
 
They've been teasing it for years, but Coroner announced a tour and a new album finally. If it does happen, it will be their first album since 1993's Grin. Their first four albums are all amazing, so hopefully it comes out.
 
The new Messa album is great. They're prior albums were in the "pretty good but not quite great" category, but they've finally reached their full potential with this one. If you like Doom/Female fronted Gothic Metal that's actually good, then this is a good listen. Also, new albums from Caustic Wound (Deathgrind) and Sijjin (Death Thrash) out this week. It's more Hardcore Punk but I'd argue it counts, but Iron Lung released their first new album in 12 years.

Listened to the new Messa album at Gary's rec and it was pretty solid. I really love the 1st track (Blood Meridian... strong Sisters of Mercy/80s Goth vibes). I felt the album waned towards the end though but I think the first 3 tracks were better than what came after unfortunately. I wanted to like The Dress track but I felt something was missing.

At Races is a really bouncy, fun track to me but it also doesn't feel like it fits this album and seems like an outlier. I don't know if that's coloring my inability to truly grab it like many other listeners it seems.

Ilud Divinum Insanus is worth a curiosity listen at least. Some of the songs are really funny and awful.

Oh man, has the addition of Grodius Maximus (Tommy Meehan) brought the right attitude back to the fold.
 
“Draconian Times” by Paradise Lost (a favorite of @Slayer btw) turned 30 this week. “Demanufacture” by Fear Factory is 30 today.
 
It took me years to warm up to Deftones because I'm wasn't a big fan of Chino's moaning vocals, but they've really grown on me in recent years. This song sounds damn good.
 

Never thought I'd see Watch Mojo cover a top death metal songs list, but it's actually really well done. I think all the songs chosen deserve a mention and are very important to the genre. I wouldn't have "Blinded By Fear" by At The Gates in my top ten, but it's a damn good song and incredibly influential to the US Metalcore scene of the 00's, and a lot of Melo Death that followed. "Hammer Smashed Face" is nowhere near the top of my favorite Cannibal Corpse songs, but them performing it in Ace Ventura is about the closest pure Death Metal has come to the mainstream. I love the Bolt Thrower and Dismember selections. I'd like to see some songs mentioned that came out after 1996, but for a surface level list that serves as a primer for early Death Metal, they chose some amazing songs.

It's Watch Mojo so the fact that they didn't list Slipknot and Mudvayne as Death Metal impressed me.
