The Metal Thread - Version 2

Jesus christ. What a shock. I know he went scorched earth on the band after he left, and it didn't seem like he was in the best place mentally. Sounds like he wasn't at fault, and the person driving the BMW was reckless and killed him.

They are also one of my favorite bands. Leviathan was such an important album to 16 year old me, and really got me into sludge metal along with Acid Bath and Crowbar. I checked out Remission not long after and was immediately hooked. Then Crack The Skye and Blood Mountain got me more interested in Prog. CTS especially was a big departure from Remission, but they executed the change perfectly. Honestly, I like all their albums in some way. Even the weakest has some great songs (Imo The Hunter). Their double album a few years ago was great and was their best since Crack The Skye for me.

This is awful. His guitar work, harsher vocals, and look really drew me into the band. He looked like a wild man and it made the band seem cooler to teenage me. Gonna go through their discography today.

RIP Brent, this is really terrible. Fuck.

In less depressing news, Testament announced a new album for October called Para Bellum. I really enjoyed going through their discography earlier this year, and I found them pretty consistent outside of a few blah albums.

Here's the single

This song is really good and their fastest song in a while. I love the death metal first riff into the thrashing section. I hope they go back into more of The Gathering or Low era sound where they had moments of Death and even Black Metal mixed into the thrash. I love Chuck Billy's growling and always want more. First single seems in that direction and I'm excited. Their last two albums or so have been decent, but not essential.

I enjoy post-reunion Testament more than any other era of Testament.

Funny thing about that riff when the blasts hit is it reminds me "Enter Sandman."

RIP to Brent Hinds..

RIP.

I was never too big an ATG fan, but you can't deny the impact and influence that Slaughter of the Soul had. His one album with the Crown, Crowned in Terror, is also their best. I liked his stuff with Disfear, too.

But my favorite thing he did was the little joke he made backstage at Wacken 2008. The crowds are chanting for ATG and he turns to the camera and goes "Kill! Switch! Engage! Kill! Switch! Engage!" Always got a chuckle out of me.

I lost interest in At The Gates as I discovered more bands, but I'd say that them, Fear Factory, and Amon Amarth are the three bands that helped me get used to growling vocals. Slaughter Of The Soul is still a huge album and The Red In The Sky Is Ours is a fantastic debut.

RIP

35 years old today. I go back and forth between this and “Slowly We Rot” as their best album.

This is a pretty solid song. Great solos and riffs while having some Countdown To Extinction catchiness. Mustaine is still a phenomenal guitarist, and his vocals are also still there. Vocals are okay actually, but as usual with Megadeth, the worst part of the song.

Testament's new album dropped today. I'm starting it and the opener whooped my ass. This song has some full on black metal sections.

I know some metalheads are iffy on Testament, but I find them to be changing their sound and adding in more interesting new things than Metallica or Megadeth or Kreator or Dark Angel or most of the other classic thrash bands releasing new material. And, just from the first few songs, Chuck Billy might of aged the best of all the big thrash vocalists, and the man beat throat cancer iirc.

The ballad was not good and was really out of place. Then the next song at least kicks ass with the HIGH NOON DEATH SOON screaming. Then, "Nature Of A Beast" and "Room 117" feel like Countdown To Extinction era Megadeth songs. Not as heavy an album as I was hoping based on the first three songs. But, still a very good album from imo the most consistent thrash band and there are some terrific songs that show that they still got it. I just wish they did a whole album of that more Blackened Thrash with Death growls style that "For The Love Of Pain" had.

7/10

Gonna listen to that later. I probably only care because I've always had a soft spot for the band, but Biohazard also has a new album out. Their first in 13 years. I'm digging it so far. Most inspired they've sounded since the 90's. Evan and Billy's voices sound great and might be better with age. I'm glad the cheesy Evan Seinfeld rapping is still there too, cause I can't get enough.

They grit that age has added to their voices really have helped the sound. I'm listening to Urban Discipline (Holds up), and Billy sounds like a kid at times lol. It's also probably the heaviest production I've heard from them. These songs have a lot of punch and heaviness to them. There's still a lot of cheese, but that's what drew me to the band.

New Coroner is getting great reviews, so I'll give my thoughts on that later tonight. Shame, the new Dark Angel album sucked, because 80's thrash bands have been having a great year. The new Testament has really grown on me, and is imo their best since The Gathering. The new Sodom is pretty solid. And, I like the new Megadeth single too. New Kreator single is forgettable though.
