Ernest Hemingway/Biggie Smalls

Both men stuck to writing what they knew (bullfighting, the drug trade, being real great), and saw little value in concocting absurd fantasies. Additionally, Hemingway's protagonists are stoic men exhibiting "grace under pressure," a quality that's very important to Papa, personally and creatively. Likewise, Biggie (operating as his own protagonist), has never been known to crack under pressure -- whether dealing with serious crimes (he keeps his hand steady on his glock) or his treatment of hoes (he does not sweat them), he still boasts a smoothness that stretches all the way back to "the days of Underoos."

Oh shit this guy is Donald Glover? Dude is pretty talented. It's cool for him to steal stuff, he's probably doing all his rap shit tongue in cheek anyway.

Yeah I'm reading up on him right now. I thought he was a decent comedian but some of these tracks are pretty sick. Here is a quote that I think he's dead-on about, talking about the lack of diverse musical influences in hip-hop:

Well, I listened to a lot of indie music. I feel like a lot rap heads don’t really listen to a whole bunch of music and are closing themselves off. People feel that if you like T.I. then you won’t like Animal Collective or if you like Jeezy you’d probably hate Lykke Li, and I don’t think that’s the case. Hip-hop is the most eclectic type of music ever, because you can stay up on anything. If the beat is tight, the beat is tight. I’m from Atlanta, so I love Outkast. I listened to a lot of their stuff when I was younger. I listened to the Wu-Tang album. I listen to “All That I Got Is You” by Ghostface like a billion times. I remember being a kid and hearing that and being like, “Oh shit, that’s like me.” [Laughs.] My cousin and I used to sleep in the same bed. [Laughs.] It was the first time I ever felt something. I listen to Kanye of course. I feel like Kanye paved the way for people like Drake, Wiz Khalifa, and rappers who rap about their life. Not every rapper is from the streets. Jay-Z’s story is not my story and I say that in the album. I love Jay-Z, but I can’t tell that story.

I don't know, the alt or "indie" rapper has been in style for a while now. A guy like Lupe Fiasco was saying the same stuff 5 years ago, N.E.R.D. before that, stuff like The Cool Kids and Das Racist in recent years......that attitude about rap isn't anything new, it's pretty much the trend in the digital music age, everything has just become this big melting pot of sounds and ideas

I disagree, the vast majority of hip hop fans and artist don't subscribe to that theory at all. Also, Lupe Fiasco sucks and doesn't really use influences that are that varied, didn't he do a track with the guy from Maroon fucking 5? Not the same thing.

Cool kids and Das Racist are pretty underground I think. I think he was referring more to the rap that more than .5% of rap fans actually listen to. Go through this thread for proof.

Damn, that's who Kanye paved the way for?

Alternative rapper, I'm not even sure what he's talking about. Like rappers who weren't living in the ghetto?

Jay-Z has been reppin for shitty white people music since at least '06. There was also that Jason Derulo song that sampled Imogen Heap. This dude isn't breaking new ground on this front.

Danger Mouse would be another guy who's been part of that trend. Stuff like the Grey Album, Danger Doom and Gnarles Barkley on one side of the spectrum, then producing for people like Black Keys, Beck and doing an album with Sparklehorse and David Lynch on the other

It's mainstream enough that it intersects with pop culture directly. You're average person might not know Cool Kids or Das Racist but they've probably heard their songs in video games, or they don't know Danger Mouse but they loved Crazy and have heard Black Keys in a bunch of commercials, that sort of thing....

I wonder if Lupe Fiasco never rapped over Hay In The Middle Of The Barn by Crucial Conflict if I would of ever tried listening to him?

Do you sniffle a little every time you get up in the morning and see your pale reflection in the mirror?

Anyway, what constitutes shitty white people music? That doesn't even make any sense. When it comes to his prime, he's sampled the fucking Doors! That's about as white as it gets.

As a white person who LOVED The Doors, I was a little bit offput when Jay and Kanye sampled 5 to 1

I mean, what the fuck were they thinking?!?

I sniffled a little

Grizzly Bear are a weird band to label as shitty white people music. I like some of their songs, but they are more like pretentious douche music. I doubt the average scrub who just listens to the radio and watches MTV at 5:00 in the morning before they go to work know who they are. Weezer would fit in much better (Or Snow Patrol if that shitty band even exists). Or Jared Leto's band, if they are still around.
