Louisiana was the old Mid South territory so Duggan was always super over there even into his WCW run. Cool that he got one last World Title shot (and I think he got one on Nitro around this same time...and I feel like he might've gotten one against Edge during his weird '00s comeback run too...)

That 96 Slamboree card earned groans from us even at the time. The earlier shows had one or maybe 2 partners who were feuding, but WCW went ahead and booked almost every team to be either guys feuding or a real team. I wonder if DDP's title match (which was taken from him for his cheating at the event IIRC) was going somewhere else before the nWo angle took over the show a few weeks later?

Starrcade 90 and SuperBrawl 1 are 2 of my absolute favorite WCW events due to Green Bay actually getting the syndicated TV in 90-91 in a Sunday AM slot IIRC. The GAB is the last event I can recall the build for as either the show was dumped or moved to some time slot a 9 year old wasn't seeing. I know a year later I watched Simmons beat Vader on a replay on Worldwide that was airing at Midnight.

Anyway Sting/Luger vs the Steiners was mind blowing to comprehend for me. Plus Sid/Gigante was HOSStastic and a must see. DOOM terrified me in 1990, so I'm sure I was thrilled at the thought of that match too. I also loved me some Freebirds and Bobby Eaton.

I had to look up Virgil the Kentucky Butcher. I'd never heard of him but looks like he worked almost 30 years. He even won a tag team match that included Mike Webster, the greatest center in NFL history, on the other side!

Over The Limit 2012 also happened on this day in history. We ordered it cause it's my birthday and wanted to see the first WWE PPV Punk Vs Bryan match. At least, first one on PPV. I feel like they had a Champion Vs Champion match on RAW 4 or 5 months earlier.

That match was great----but the show ended with bad Cena comedy against Johnny Ace in a Power Ranger suit.

He's an oddity in that he worked near the top in the WWWF but become known under a different name, "Mighty" John Quinn. He experienced most of his later success on the UK scene.

I had to look up Virgil the Kentucky Butcher. I'd never heard of him but looks like he worked almost 30 years. He even won a tag team match that included Mike Webster, the greatest center in NFL history, on the other side!
Now that Al said it was John Quinn, I recognize the (real?) name.
--
Dusty also worked Jack Victory in 1999 ECW on this date, which I didn't add.

One of the fun little discoveries I made when I was doing the month by month breakdown articles was that Link was signed from Florida, and then put right on the tour that was going through Florida to maximize the WWF flex

@King Kamala I like to think wrestling died with Benoit, so anything after that is purely from the mind of an autistic child staring blankly into a snowglobe at a hospital.

1981 - Tommy Rich won a tournament for the Georgia Heavyweight championship at the Omni in Atlanta, GA. The full results of the event saw:

Round One:
Tommy Rich beat Bill Irwin
Ken Patera beat Ray Candy
Dusty Rhodes beat French Angel
Greg Valentine beat Mr. Wrestling II
Mike Sharpe beat Jim Duggan
Nikolai Volkoff received a bye.

Semi Finals:
Tommy Rich beat Nikolai Volkoff
Dusty Rhodes went to a double DQ against Ken Patera
Greg Valentine beat Mike Sharpe

Finals
Tommy Rich beat Greg Valentine to win the Georgia Heavyweight title.
This sounds fucking siiiick, right down to the fact that instead of doing an 8 or 16-man tourney they turned up the gimmickry with a bye, a semi final featuring six dudes and a double dq finish to turn that into a one on one finals. so rasslin

We are still doing the Steiner math to determine how the Sheepherders worked twice in the 1988 2nd round of the Crockett Cup.

Classic example of "Things Brody thinks are awesome that he would hate today"
- Bret holding the American flag earned a bonus chuckle.
- Demolition feels a little out of place among most of the mid-carders, not only in their rank but in their gimmicks compared to most of the guys in the ring.
- This was a nice set up for the Studd/Duggan vs Andre/Haku matches that went awry not long afterward. Even broken down 1989 Andre feels a little wrong being involved in this goofiness. But his run was over as a true monster :(

The Bushwhackers defeated the Heavenly Bodies
Koko B. Ware defeated the Genius
Bastion Booger defeated the Cuban Assassin
Duke Drose defeated Dave Heath
Yokozuna defeated Typhoon (sub. for Earthquake)

Thinking about crappiness of '94 WWF and wanted to see what was happening OTD. If this hasn't gotten brought up during our recurring Worst WWF House show lineups then it SHOULD be. Just imagine watching '94 WWF and getting to see it live and getting Koko B. Ware (still there) Vs The Genius (still there!?), Bastion Booger Vs Dave Sierra and Duke The Dumpster Vs a pre Gangrel David Heath.

I wonder who played the face in that Booger Vs Cuban Assassin match? I'm guessing Booger maybe since had a mini face turn earlier that year but maybe Cuban Assassin since the show was in South Florida?

Oh man....Apparently Chris Benoit and Nancy shared today as a birthday....
On a happier note, my man MR T is celebrating today as well.

1952 - Lou Thesz defeats Baron Michele Leone in Los Angeles to merge the California-version of the World Title with the National Wrestling Alliance and National Wrestling Association World Titles. Those three title wins, along with a non-title win over American Wrestling Association champion Gorgeous George, makes Lou Thesz the undisputed World Heavyweight Wrestling Champion. The title would remain undisputed for five years, until a Thesz-Edouard Carpentier match ends in controversy, splintering the titles again.

IIRC Leone just went in the WWE HOF this year.

1966 Chicago, Illinois:
- In a non title match, Dick the Bruiser beat AWA Champion Mad Dog Vachon

1970 - WWWF ran Washington DC at the National Arena with the following results:
-WWWF World Champion Bruno Sammartino fought Bepo Mongol (Volkoff) to a draw.

- Jim Brunzell beat Blackjack Lanza

1984 - WWF returned to New York City, NY at Madison Square Garden, drawing a sellout as well as an overflow crowd watching the card via closed circuit in the adjacent Felt Forum with the following results:

-In his return to the Garden for the first time in two years, Jesse Ventura defeated Salvatore Bellomo via submission with the backbreaker at 4:31.

-The Wild Samoans defeated Bobo Brazil, Rocky Johnson, & SD Jones at 12:00

1986 - The White Ninja (Keiji Mutoh) defeats Kendall Windham for the Florida Heavyweight Title in Tampa. The first change saw Cactus Jack and Kevin Sullivan defeat The Nasty Boys in a ‘Broad Street Bully’ match to win the WCW Tag Team Championship. He had been defeated by Rick Rude in a title match in Tokyo, Japan but after the match the win was overturned and the title was offered to Sting who turned it down, thus leaving it vacant. The real life reason for this was because Rude had sustained a back injury in the Tokyo match that consequently ended his in-ring career. Also of note, this was the last WCW PPV to be held before they signed Hulk Hogan.

Slamboree 93 is another of my personal favorite WCW events. For whatever reason my neighbor's family got it and the KOTR 93 PPVs and not a single other one that I can recall over the 1987-1996 time frame where we were close. Once he gave me the tape to watch, Slamboree was viewed dozens of times over the years. A funny bonus I enjoyed was a Slamboree control center that was added on one of the tapes. Solie puts over Verne Gagne as one of the finest technical wrestlers ever meanwhile the film WCW used was Verne throwing punch after punch against Ox Baker (IIRC).
