Today in 1993, WWF actually ran a show in my hometown. I still can't believe they ever came here.

WWF @ Brockville, Ontario - Memorial Centre - May 26, 1993
Tatanka defeated Razor Ramon
Doink the Clown defeated Crush
Owen Hart defeated Terry Taylor
The Undertaker defeated Giant Gonzalez
WWF Tag Team Champions Ted Dibiase & IRS defeated Rick & Scott Steiner

I posted these pictures at the old board way back when (file date says I scanned them in 2002, I can't believe I still have them).93house01.jpg93house02.jpg93house03.jpg
I didn't take them myself, a friend's dad did, but I think I was sitting pretty close to where these were taken.

1987 - The Rock N' Roll Express defeat Manny Fernandez & Rick Rude for the NWA World Tag Team Title... or do they? Rude and Fernandez were the reigning champions, when Rude left for the WWF. On some of the NWA syndicated TV shows, it was announced that Rude was injured, and being replaced on the championship team by Ivan Koloff. However, Fernandez then left the NWA, so a "phantom" title change was created. The NWA claimed on television that the Rock N' Roll Express won the belts in Spokane, Washington on this date from Rude & Fernandez, and then aired footage of "the match". In truth, they just aired the ending of an old match where the Rock N' Roll Express won and claimed it was the title change.

1987 - Hacksaw Jim Duggan and the Iron Sheik were arrested together on charges of drug possession after they were pulled over by police on the New Jersey Turnpike en route to a WWF card in Asbury Park, NJ. The two wrestlers, who were feuding at the time, were pulled over when a trooper saw Duggan drinking a can of beer while driving. Duggan was charged with possession of marijuana and drinking alcohol while driving. The Iron Sheik was charged with possession of cocaine and marijuana. Duggan would receive a conditional discharge, while Sheik was put on probation for a year.
Believe it or not, The Iron Sheik actually gave an interview months later where, in an attempt to maintain kayfabe, claimed that he didn't have a driver's license in the U.S. and the WWF forced him to travel with Duggan to the show. In his 2012 autobiography, Duggan claimed that Sheik was stuck at the airport and asked for a ride. It was the first and only time they ever traveled together.

(IIRC the Apter mags covered this straight in the news portion of the magazine and didn't even try and kayfabe things, then moved on)

2002 - WWE Smackdown ran Saskatoon in Canada. Robert Bailey filed the following live report:

The show opened with not one but TWO weddings, which involved I believe to be local people. The fact that these people chose to be married in a wrestling ring is in a word, sad. Nonetheless, the segment was hilarious. First off, instead of real wedding music, they came out to the cheesy rock-and-roll wedding music from the “flash Gordon” soundtrack. Few people made that connection I’m sure, but this was absolutely hilarious. Second, we saw the only “what?” chant of the evening, and it was loud. Lance storm (who was the best man, oddly enough), was trying desperately to restrain his laughter as the fans shouted “WHAT”” after every line. Serves them right for getting married in the middle of a ring.

On the show Blue Panther defeated Octagón by forfeit to win the Mexican National Middleweight Championship, and then in the main event Konnan defeated Jake Roberts 2-0 in a ‘Hair vs. Hair 2 Out Of 3 Falls’ match meaning Roberts got his head shaved.

1996 – During WCW’s first ever two-hour Monday Nitro (all the Nitro episodes before it were only one hour long). One of the most impactful debuts in wrestling history took place. In the middle of a match between The Mauler and Steve Doll, Scott Hall casually hopped over the guard rail and cut a promo in the ring saying to the crowd ‘You people know who I am, but you don’t know why I’m here.’ Hall (as Razor Ramon) had until a few weeks prior been employed by the WWF and this invasion angle soon gave rise to the NWO and gave WCW a major push in the Monday Night Wars.

RAW also had Ahmed vs Vader as they seemed to load up the live show to compete with what they had to assume would be Hall and Nash showing up on WCW.

1996 – WWF In Your House 8: Beware of Dog 2 took place in the Florence Civic Center in Florence, South Carolina. Beware of Dog had taken place two days earlier but only two matches were shown on PPV due to a severe thunderstorm, and so this event was televised to make up for it. The original two matches were shown at the start of the show followed by three live matches:
Marc Mero defeated Hunter Hearst Helmsley.
Shawn Michaels retained the WWF Championship in a match against The British Bulldog. After the referee had been knocked down a replacement ref took over, but the original referee came round just as Michaels performed a German Suplex into a pin combination. One ref counted Michaels shoulders on the mat, the other counted the Bulldogs, and so the match ended in a no contest.
Savio Vega defeated Stone Cold Steve Austin in a Four-Corners Caribbean Strap match. With the win, Ted DiBiase was forced to leave the WWF.
Vader pinned Yokozuna following a distraction from Jim Cornette.
Goldust defeated The Undertaker in a Casket match to retain the WWF Intercontinental belt. When the Undertaker opened the casket to put Goldust inside, Mankind was already there and locked in the Mandible Claw on the ‘Taker, forced him in to the casket and closed the lid giving Goldust the win.

2001 – WWF Monday Night Raw was in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. On the show Chris Jericho pinned The Big Show to become the new WWF Hardcore Champion. On his way up the ramp he was met with a Gore from Rhyno who then got the pin to take the belt and become the first WCW/ECW competitor to win a WWF championship belt.

2001 - The WWF fired Brian Lawler, aka Grandmaster Sexay, following his arrest for possession of illegal drugs. He was arrested early in the morning in Calgary, Alberta, Canada after landing for Raw that night, where he was scheduled to team with Steve Blackman and Trish Stratus against Dean Malenko, Perry Saturn and Terri. The WWF had apparently made it very clear to their employees not to bring any "illegal contraband" into Canada, and his arrest at an international checkpoint was an embarrassment to the company. Sexay had been getting storyline and TV time, and had in fact appeared as the guest co-host on Heat the night before.

2001 - There was quite a bit of controversy over the Hart family (most notably Bruce, Stu and Diana) appearing in the front row at an edition of Raw in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Martha Hart, widow of Owen Hart, said it would be "disgusting" if any of them showed up before the event, given her legal entanglements with the company. Bret Hart was obviously against it, although neither he or Martha talked to their family, instead deciding to send their messages back and forth in the Canadian newspapers.

2002 - The NWA's Bill Behrens announces that Dan Severn is being stripped of the NWA World Heavyweight Title with the following press release:

The NWA Board of Directors announced today that by unanimous vote, it has stripped the NWA World Heavyweight Title from current champion Dan“The Beast” Severn. Mr. Severn had been offered an opportunity to appear on the first NWA-TNA Pay Per View scheduled for June 19th 2002. Unfortunately Mr. Severn could not accept the booking due to a previous “shoot-fight” commitment. Dan Severn is a two time NWA World Heavyweight Champion having recently defeated Shinya Hashimoto in Japan.

I think it was one of the old Network roundtables where Bill Watts mentioned his tag team partner at the time made a particularly pointed racial remark to Bobo Brazil. Looking that up led to either Gorilla Monsoon or McClarty.

Andre The Giant/Earthquake had to have been the plan for SummerSlam '91, right? At risk of offending 99% of this board, Natural Disasters/Bushwhackers (with Andre in their corner) screams last minute replacement.

Honestly, I don't see why they didn't do that Tugboat heel turn angle with The Rockers. It just seems out of place that a monster heel turn formed out of a betrayal of Luke & Butch. Plus it could've helped the Rockers slow burn breakup.

Edit- I guess Shawn Michaels was injured in the Summer of '91 and Jim Powers was filling in as Marty's partner (Young Rockers? Rockin' Stallions)? Although I suppose they could have done a fun "SHAWN MICHAELS IS INJURED AT SUMMERSLAM AGAIN!?!" angle

Andre still working Japan is nuts, though. I wonder if a comedy six-man that goes four minutes max with Andre/Whackers vs Disasters/Jimmy Hart would've at least been more fun. Hot tag Andre, punch Jimmy, the end. Match would be hot garbage but a win in MSG would be a good sendoff.

1972 St. Louis, Missouri:
NWA Champion Dory Funk Jr. defeated Johnny Valentine in 2 out of 3 falls
- Jack Brisco, Rufus R. Jones and Pat O’Connor defeated Pak-Son, Harley Race and Big Bill Miller

1972 - The WWWF runs at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York. The results:
- The Fabulous Kangaroos (Al Costello and Roy Heffernan) defeated Mike Pappas and Akim Manuka in a two-out-of-three-falls match.
- Dory Funk, Sr. defeated Bill White.
- Bob Roop defeated Manuel Soto. (I can't say I realized Roop had a WWWF run)
- Beautiful Bobby fought Jimmy Valiant to a draw. (Not sure who Bobby is)
- Chief Jay Strongbow defeated Eddie Graham. (Bookerman doing jobs!)
- Tarzan Tyler fought Gorilla Monsoon to a draw.
- WWWF World Heavyweight Champion Pedro Morales defeated Luke Graham.

1973 – Dory Funk Sr. passed away at the age of 53 as the result of heart failure.

1980 - Matt Borne & Buzz Sawyer defeat Jimmy Snuka & The Iron Sheik in Greenville, South Carolina in a tournament final to win the Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Title.

1983 – A tournament known as the International Wrestling Grand Prix ended in Tokyo, Japan with Hulk Hogan defeating Antonio Inoki by countout in the final. The four week long tournament had consisted of a round robin format between two groups of wrestlers with the winners of each group meeting in the final. Alongside the finalists, the star-studded tournament featured Andre The Giant, Big John Studd, Rusher Kimura, Killer Khan, El Canek, Otto Wanz, Akira Maeda and Enrique Vera. As a result of the win, which was considered a huge upset, Hogan also won the NWF Championship vacated by Inoki the week prior.

1987 – At an event in Buffalo, New York, The Honky Tonk Man defeated Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat to win the Intercontinental Championship to begin the longest reign with that title in WWE history. He went on to hold the belt for 454 days.

LOD fought Shawn/Austin on RAW that felt like a really big deal at the time. I kept that VHS tape for the next 20 years until I tossed almost all my VHS' out.

1998 – The Junkyard Dog (Sylvester Ritter) was killed at the age of 45 in a car accident in Forest, Mississippi. Ritter is a WWE Hall Of Famer and one of the most beloved babyfaces of the 1980s, breaking down race barriers in the industry during his hugely successful main event career.

2014 – The Shield implodes on WWE Raw! One night after The Shield (Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns) defeated Evolution (Triple H, Randy Orton and Batista) 3-0 in an elimination rules match at WWE Payback, Batista ‘quit’ the group and WWE and Triple H promised there would always be a ‘Plan B’. That plan was revealed at the end of the night when Seth Rollins shockingly blindsided his Shield cohorts with vicious steel chair shots as Triple H and Orton watched on from ringside.

1996 - The Monday Night Wars continued, with WCW's Nitro beating WWF's Raw, 3.0 to 2.3. Raw featured Jake Roberts defeating Triple H, The Godwins defeating Techno Team 2000, Mankind defeating Barry Horowitz and Steve Austin defeating Bob Holly. Nitro offered The Steiners defeating Sting & Lex Luger via DQ, Scott Norton defeating Hugh Morrus, The Giant defeating Ice Train, Ric Flair & Arn Anderson defeating The Rock N' Roll Express, Kevin Sullivan defeating Prince Iaukea, Steve Regal defeating Hacksaw Duggan, Craig Pittman defeating Disco Inferno, Faces Of Fear defeating High Voltage, and John Tenta defeating Bubba Rogers via countout. (I must have had this Nitro on tape for a while as I distinctly remember the Express/Horsemen, Sullivan/Prince and FoF/Voltage matches. I was pretty into the Bubba/Tenta feud. Tenta's renewed push sort of vanished in the nWo fever for whatever reason. The Giant had fun matches with Fire and Ice during this time frame too).

2002 – On WWE Raw from Dallas, Texas, Bradshaw defeated Steven Richards to win the WWE Hardcore Championship. On the same show, Shawn Michaels made his return to WWE television as a member of the New World Order and ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin battled Ric Flair in the main event.

2007 – WWE One Night Stand: Extreme Rules took place at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida. Every match had some kind of ‘extreme’ stipulation. The most notable happening on the show was Bobby Lashley defeating Mr. McMahon in a street fight to win the ECW Championship. John Cena retained the WWE Championship in the main event against Great Khali in a Last Man Standing match. Also of note, Randy Orton defeated Rob Van Dam in a stretcher match and then attacked RVD post-match to write him off TV. He would not return to WWE until 2013.

Von Erich suffers a dislocated hip and a severely damaged right foot and undergoes over 13 hours of surgery. Von Erich would later have the foot amputated, but returned to the ring with a prosthetic foot and continued his career. To this day, there is no definitive answer as to whether Von Erich lost the foot at the time of the initial surgery, or had it amputated later (with some even saying it was removed after a failed early comeback attempt did further damage to it).

Oh My! I have been doing OT, yard work and getting my fat ass worn out during a streak of 90 degree days here and this thread has suffered!

-Abdullah the Great & Ali Hassan beat WWA tag champs Spike Huber & Wilbur Snyder to win the title.
-WWA champ Harley Race beat Rufus R. Jones.
-Dick the Bruiser defeated the Hangman in a steel cage match.

This was a really down period for the WWA. I actually have some of this era's TV on DVD. They had a few dollar store knock off gimmicks of top guys, with 50+ Bruiser and Bobo as the top faces. Regal was married to Wilbur Snyder's daughter.

1982 - WWF ran Madison Square Garden with a live event that was telecast on the MSG Network featuring the following results:

-Jose Estrada pinned Laurent Soucie. (NCAA star who worked for Verne and Vince before moving on in life)

That's a damn good card!

- Jerry Blackwell & Sheik Adnan beat Ray Stevens & Baron Von Raschke

1985 - Ken Patera and Mr. Saito are found guilty of charges filed against them following the infamous "McDonald's Incident" in Waukesha, Wisconsin when Patera threw a boulder through the window of a closed McDonald's when the staff refused to reopen and serve them. This led to a confrontation with police later on, and the two men were arrested and charges were filed. Patera was convicted of two counts of battery on a police officer and one count of criminal damage to property. Saito was convicted of three counts of battery on a police officer and one count of obstructing the law. Both men were sentenced to prison time.

1988 Memphis, Tennessee:
- AWA Champion Jerry Lawler beat Curt Hennig by dq
- Scott Steiner beat Robert Fuller to win the finals of the Renegade Rampage tournament

(Still baffling that Scott Steiner is getting a push in Memphis and his only AWA stuff I know of off hand is a quick TV job to Ron Garvin in Fall. He was NCAA legit, had the look and Rick had been in the AWA for a hiccup a few years earlier.)

1993 – At a taping of Monday Night Raw in Albany, New York, Shawn Michaels defeated Marty Jannetty to win back the Intercontinental Championship he had lost to his former Rockers partner weeks earlier. This match was also notable as the first time that Kevin Nash appeared on WWE programming, debuting in Shawn Michaels’ corner as his bodyguard Diesel.

Kings Mountain, North Carolina:

- The Barbarian defeated Johnny Gunn
- Johnny B. Badd defeated Michael Hayes

-- USWA Unified World Champ Jerry Lawler beat Bam Bam Bigelow via DQ

(Always liked seeing WWF guys pop up in USWA results in PWI)

1997 – ECW Wrestlepalooza ’97 took place at the ECW Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The show is most remember for Tommy Dreamer finally defeating his arch-rival Raven at the 14th attempt in a Loser Leaves Town match. The stipulation was set because Raven had given his notice and was soon to sign with WCW. Dreamer was attacked after the match by Rob Van Dam, Sabu and a debuting Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler to an enormous crowd reaction. The only title change on the night saw Taz defeat Shane Douglas by submission to win the Television Championship. The stipulation in this match stated that if Taz couldn’t make Douglas submit within 3 minutes he would be barred from the promotion for 90 days. He did so in 2 minutes and 50 seconds.

1962 Amarillo, Texas:

1987 Orlando, Florida:
- Mike Rotunda defeated Dory Funk, Jr. to win the held up NWA Florida Heavyweight Title

1999 - Sable (Rena Mero) filed a $110 million lawsuit against the WWF claiming sexual harassment. Her claim was that WWF tried to intimidate her into performing "obscene" acts, including having her breasts exposed on television and taking part in a lesbian storyline. She also sought rights to the "Sable" name. She ultimately settled with WWF out of court, and did not get the rights to her name. She returned to the company in April of 2003.

2006 – John Tenta, best known to wrestling fans as Earthquake, died at the age of 42 after contracting bladder cancer.

2009 – WWE Extreme Rules took place at the New Orleans Arena in New Orleans, Louisiana. The main event saw Jeff Hardy retain his World Heavyweight Championship over Edge in the main event ladder match. However, Hardy’s night was not over as Money In The Bank contract holder CM Punk decided to cash in his title shot and defeated Hardy to become the new champion. Multiple other titles changed hands on the show also. Batista became the first man to win the WWE Championship in a cage match when he defeated Randy Orton. Kofi Kingston won a Fatal Four-Way match against MVP, William Regal and Matt Hardy to win the WWE United States Championship and Chris Jericho won the Intercontinental Championship by defeating Rey Mysterio in a no holds barred match.
https://www.hookedonwrestling.co.uk...te-start-time-matches-how-to-watch-streaming/
2010 – One of the most memorable conclusions to an episode of Raw in the show’s history went down in Miami, Florida. The main event of the ‘Viewer’s Choice’ special saw John Cena and CM Punk face off in a bout that ended in a no contest when the match was interrupted by the ‘rookies’ who took part in the recently concluded first series of WWE’s NXT show. Led by Wade Barrett, the gang assaulted Cena as well as various ringside employees and laid waste to ringside including half destroying the ring itself. The group would soon go on to be known as Nexus and be a fixture in the main event scene in the company for several months. During the angle, Daniel Bryan used Justin Roberts’ own tie to choke the ring announcer in a vicious looking spot. This action got Bryan immediately fired.

2019 WWE Super ShowDown: Jeddah, Saudi Arabia:

- Randy Orton pinned HHH
- Mansoor won a 51-man Battle Royal

One thing this thread makes me think about is if the matches I see and go "Holy Cow!" were considered passé or over done to the actual viewing audience.
WWA was going downhill by this point, yet Verne was booking old guys (including WWA's Snyder and Bruiser) semi regularly and was drawing well for the most part until 1986. Maybe it was an overall depth thing? Bruiser had some magic left to some fans (as shown by his big drawing matches in St Louis into 1983ish) but his hometown fans had seen the bit for too long I guess. Maybe a bit like Lawler after 1985ish when drawing big crowds was no longer easy in Memphis. Lawler stayed on top for another 12 years or so anyway right until he swindled some mark out of a bundle for the USWA in 97ish. Of course Lawler then headlined the new Memphis show for several more years, in front of mostly tiny crowds.

The WWF ran their first show in Indianapolis in January of '85. Hogan vs. Orndorff. Before that, if you live in Indianapolis and want to see wrestling, what are your options? Wrestling on the Superstation, Tuesday Night Titans, if you have cable. But they're not giving away their biggest matches on television. As long as Bruiser is still willing to work he's the only game in town.

If Dusty got him instead of McMahon: he works the midcard until he gets molten hot. Then he puts over Dusty Rhodes and goes back to the midcard (or goes north to have the main event career).

Savage would have a total mismatch. I can't even picture it. Closest I can imagine is Savage going with Mid South and being brought in when the buyout happened, then he'd end up as either Terry Taylor or Sting with no inbetween. But now I talked myself into Savage having a UWF run against Dr. Death and am sorta sad.

Best thing Savage ever did was the Jake feud. I'd try to make a case that Savage from January 1991 to August 1992 (or thereabouts) is one of the best booked WWF main eventers of all time. Even the retirement announcing stint played into it.

After thinking about it for a day, I don't think I can pick a favorite Savage thing. He was involved in some of the best stuff wrestling's ever had. The multi-year Mega Powers team and explosion, HTM, Snake, Steamboat, Flair, and DDP are all such great stuff. He had Beefcake's best singles stuff of his whole career. Gun to my head I'd probably say the Mega Powers was his all time best story/feud and the WM7 Warrior postmatch was his best angle.

And we got a real gift with the reboot of Savage-Flair in WCW 1995-96.

Flair was the greatest foil for Savage. Flair just fucking with Savage and taking advantage of his biggest insecurities and Savage wanting to perpetually murder him will always be one of the top parts for both guys, in my opinion. But Flair/Savage at Wrestlemania 8 is my favorite match ever and the weekly Flair dinner parties on Nitro is some of the best heeling ever.

I don't know if I agree but I do know I can't mount an argument against that. That stretch begins with a 4+ star match and one of the greatest angles in wrestling history. Then some fun announcing and Coliseum Video gigs. The incredible Roberts feud. And the stretch ends with the first half of the first Flair feud & another 4+ star match. Yeah, that's a good year.

Stretch from III to IV is also incredibly solid. Hard to think of guys who had better build to title wins than Macho. They were both cathartic and feel good in entirely different ways.
