I always thought that as well. The Machines didn't get over like the wwf expected because their primarily young audience ( I was 7) didn't get the joke as it was over their heads. You could tell with the build up they thought it was going to get over huge and it just...didn't... at all.

I wonder if the endless Andre/Studd feud was also part of the reason for the angle not getting over? They had been running the feud since 1983 in the core WWF rotation.
---

Any guesses what this show looks like if Mania bombs and this is the final Hail Mary to kickstart the national expansion?

I wonder if the Wrestling Classic is a more standard supercard on PPV if Mania failed? With Mania being a dud, the idea of bimonthly PPVs would certainly be off the table.

The only thing they could run to possibly get the goodwill back is Hogan/Piper, T/Orton, and doing the Orndorff turn. Stack that show. Hell throw Tito/Valentine on that card and Andre/Bundy. A Wrestlemania card. Raise the ticket price just in case, too.

It's all in how it bombs. If it's one of those "it failed but got buzz" things, then it still gets a shitty slot for maybe three shows (of which two probably make air). If it's a total nosedive, it's all over by the end of 1986 anyway and we just get WWF guys poisoning Crockett into early bankruptcy, with the business becoming a dark pit of niche with no exposure on a national level and none of us are here.

Listening to the OVP Patreon review of the Boston Garden show with Macho Man winning the IC Title and Bruno/Piper in a cage match and Jesse Ventura is obviously eating while commentating during the main event.

I guess Vince didn’t produce these Boston Garden show cause he totally seems like a misophonia type that would be triggered by that.

They could've brought DDP in as Dibiase's bookie. But this is one those ideas I think is initially fun and then I hear GOOD GOD! in my head ten times in thirty seconds.

DDP would be the third-tier guy who manages any heels he can get to help him in his never ending war with the Killer Bees.

Pretty much, yeah. Right after they beat his dream team of Mike Sharpe and Barry Horowitz.

With Vince's love of messing with Verne, it is kind of surprising the WWF didn't swoop up DDP and Bad Company at some point in late 87 to mid 88. DDP left the AWA at some point in the summer to work in Florida and his clubs IIRC. I'm pretty sure he wasn't part of the Superclash build.

I feel like Vince thought very briefly the Rooster would get over, then quickly realized it was a total joke but it was a really funny joke so he made Taylor do things to amuse him in Vince fashion.

Hammer is finally looking old while still looking the same. And he really does look like Mama Fratelli.

Wild (IMO) house show promo on the latest Wrestling History Hand Grenade pod with Muraco.

He cuts a promo on Butch Reed, but calls him "Bruce" as says "I remember his younger days, on the shows in Kansas City where he was called "Bruce" Reed, when he was just a natural athlete, fresh out of football. I don't know why you want to be called Butch now, Bruce..."

It's more, for me, that Vince thought Foley looked to sleazy for the WWF but here's Jimmy Garvin.

What does Garvin even DO if he sticks around? Was it solely non-wrestling stuff?

Ironically, I think Garvin was supposed to be a proto Dok Hendrix character. The vaguely heelish counterpart to Mean Gene (or Todd Pettingell in Dok’s case(

That would've been rough. I guess it's at least slightly better then Bruce Pritchard doing a voice.

Scott Levy should've been brought in much earlier. If he goes to the WWF, he becomes a huge star by 1994 based on roster depletion alone.

I don’t think Vince would have ever made Scott Levy a top guy or even an IC Title level guy. Especially with what a horrible influence he was on Shane.

Lanny Poffo’s career is his ceiling if Raven has a long term run with WWF.

If he comes to the WWF instead of WCW, he succeeds. He hits the exact moment when the shift happens and they need to rely on smaller guys who can work, and his promos would be invaluable.

There is no way Lanny is the ceiling. Minimum it's Jacques Rougeau, where he's a solid presence that's extremely entertaining.

I'm glad you brought him up, because I was just getting ready to ask about him in the "Old School" thread: I know that Raven is well regarded because of his promos (which I pretty much ignored), and I remember him being decent in the ring, at least when he was working as Scotty Flamingo, but what was the signature Raven and/or Flamingo match? I remember Raven having legendary feuds with Dreamer and Sandman, but my memory is of those feuds being carried by the promo work; I don't remember any of the matches being any good.

I feel like I can just about remember Liger and Pillman carrying Scotty Flamingo a couple of times, but are there even any good "non-gimmick" Raven matches?

Raven/Stevie vs Pitbulls Double Dog Collar Match and vs Rhino for the Hardcore title at Backlash 2001 are just a few.

He had plenty of non-gimmick signature matches in WCW as well vs DDP, Benoit, Saturn, etc.

His best Raven work is with Benoit, DDP, and AJ Styles. If it involved Saturn (and doesn't revolve around a mop) it's good stuff too. There's a really fun Polo/Jannetty match as well. It's hard to think about a lot of his ECW stuff because it practically is all about a storyline and less about "workrate," but Raven is someone like Jake or Andre where it isn't always about how hard the work is but how smart a worker he is and the storytelling he's capable of. At least that's why I'm a fan of him.
