Re: Boxing 2016 Thread

Great fight. I think Kovalev pulled it out, but Ward weathered the storm and turned it around as it went on. I wouldn't be entirely surprised if the judges went his way.

Re: Boxing 2016 Thread

Ward showed a lot of heart in turning the fight around, but I think Kovalev did enough to put himself up by a few more rounds than Ward was able to make up.

Anyone catch Hopkins final fight tonight? Smith blasted him and knocked him through the ropes. Scary finish.

Yeah. Hopkins kept going on about getting pushed through the ropes. Nothing close to that happened. Also claiming to have hurt his ankle in the fall... somehow?

Re: Boxing 2016 Thread

One of Floyd's fighters, Gervonta Davis is 16-0 with 15 KO's and fighting for a world title soon. He's good friends with Cody Garbrandt, which is cool. He also was trained by Cutty, which is cooler:

Davis has been training at Upton Boxing Center since he was five years old.[4] Davis is trained by Calvin Ford who was the inspiration for the character Dennis "Cutty" Wise on the hit HBO television series, The Wire.[5][6] Davis had a very successful amateur career, winning many National Championships.

Being a 'Baltimore' fighter is gonna be a thing, now.

Speaking of Baltimore fighters, Canelo vs Chavez Jr set for May 6 at a catchweight of 164.5

Yep. Was really impressed with Jarrett Hurd once he figured out how to get inside on someone who was consistently moving backwards.

That first fight was a lot of fun too. I havent done cable in a while so I dont see near as many fights as I used to, but that looked like a FOTY type.

Don't see many guys react like that to a short check hook, hope he's alright.

Re: Boxing 2016 Thread

The Chocolatito fight was a garbage decision, especially considering the fact that the headbutts didn't even really play a role in the scoring even though they clearly affected the fight. They took a point away after like 6 of them. But they also rewarded the headbutt, that early knockdown was not off of a punch, so it cancelled out and he got a bunch of free fuckin' headbutts.

https://youtu.be/8Rmt8MSOAgU

Go to 7:01 for a slow motion replay of the first round 'knockdown'. It's clear that he thrusts his head into him and that's what knocks him off balance, not the body shot. You can even see Chocolatito motion to the ref as he went down that it wasn't a punch, it was an illegal blow (but hard to get all that across with the language barrier). Immediately after that replay, they show it from another angle that makes the headbutt even clearer.

This was like the Holm/De Randamie of boxing reffing for me.
