Commercials we hate

What's the rating scale for historically awful commercials? I suggest a scale ranging from "Saved by Zero" to "Five Dollar Footlong."

(Anyone that watched 5 minutes of the NFL in 2007 just had a PTSD flashback.)

...I get the impression that they wanted Wes Anderson to shoot these commercials, but he was busy and got a fanboy to do it.

I usually don't let commercials get to me but one has been bugging me for the past few weeks. It's an anti-smoking PSA using a needy friend as a metaphor for cigarettes. The girl is so goddamned annoying!

I hate that commercial. There's a bunch of anti-smoking PSA's that have been running lately that are pretty annoying but that one is the worst probably.

I can't tell if I like or hate the one where the old bitches are singing about Old Spice getting their boys laid.

That "I sent you like, A HUNDRED TEXTS" ad is starting to annoy me. WHY NOT JUST DIAL HIS FUCKING NUMBER AND ACTUALLY TALK TO HIM YOU CUNT!?

This is apparently a real world problem for some. If my fiance needs to ask her Mother something, she'll send a text and sit there and wait. She will then proceed to become extremely annoyed if her Mom doesnt respond fast enough, and text her again. If I ask "why don't you just call her", I get an "UGH!" and a dirty look.

Half of the time people don't answer the damn phone though.

I hate it when I call someone and they don't answer, then about 10 seconds later I get a text that says "What's up?"

If it was short enough to go in a text then it would have gone in a text, obviously I want to talk to you jackass.

THIS.

Also, more lame anti-smoking PSAs:

They also have rare variant collector's edition menthol versions of the ads. ::)

Well I certainly never thought I'd here "Gigantic" in a commercial. More amusing than annoying though.

People want to do the laziest thing. Having a phone conversation is more socially and emotionally intimate or taxing than simply shooting off a text. I think a lot of people in our culture (myself included sometimes) like keeping others at arms' length. Especially since you might have a quick question, whereas a phone call requires the disingenuine "what's up/how're you doing/what's new/what ya got planned this weekend/we should really get together" ettiquette at the beginning and end of the call (you can't just burst right into your agenda with someone you haven't talked to for a few weeks or more, nor can you hang up right after). Both of you know it's bullshit but you have to go through the routine, and what could have been a couple text platitudes to get your answer has become a 5- or 10-minute diversion. Like the previous poster talking about his g/f's mom--it's often easier to go this way depending on the person. A phone call to certain people can turn into an hour of trying to get off the phone. I often hear my wife going "Mom, I have to get off the phone...Mom, I gotta go" intermittently for like 20 or 30 minutes of just listening to her mom go on and on, with her mother oblivious to the one-sided nature of their conversations (and by extension, their whole adult relationship). Around 40 minutes to an hour after the call started, her mom goes "I have to go! I have to go!" and hangs up, usually when my wife finally has a chance to be the speaker and not the listener. Yes, she's an emotionally-exhausting person.

Texting, like social media, is another awful trend of depersonalization in our culture that makes us feel like we're maintaining relationships with people when we're doing the opposite. It really needs to stop, but holy shit is it easier.

EDIT: Sorry, that's really off-topic. I guess I should have branched this discussion into the "Are you one of those people with a cell phone in front of their face all day?" thread in General Chat.

Honestly, this isn't a bad commercial and both girls are eminently smushable (and Bruins girl takes a great header) but they show this thing SO MUCH during the playoffs that I have to nitpick. Is Boston/Philly THAT big of a rivalry? Wouldn't it work better if Philly girl had a Montreal shirt or Bruins girl had a Rangers shirt?

Boston-Philly used to be pretty big NBA rivalry....but I don't think it's "most hated enemy" status in any sport

The only rivalries anybody up here actually give a shit about are Sox/Yankees, Celtics/Lakers, Pats/Jets, and Bruins/Habs, in that order.

These Vista Print ads that play multiple times during EVERY SINGLE COMMERCIAL BREAK on TruTV.

Also, these Subway commercials with the guy that tries to make the ingredients of a Turkey, Bacon and Guacamole sub sound like a romance novel.
