Smashing Pumpkins & Marilyn Manson are touring together this summer.
I kind of want to see it because apparently, I'm a 15 year old from 1998...
So I went to this last night! I got a ticket for $30 on Groupon, though if I had waited I could have got it cheaper. This is actually the second time I saw Manson this year, as I saw him in Bethlehem in January, but I wouldn't have gone then if I knew he was touring with the Pumpkins this summer. I like Manson but not enough to see him twice in one calendar year. Especially when that year is 2015! But I wanted to see the Pumpkins too, and I wasn't able to during their last tour, and I couldn't pass up this deal. I think I liked Manson better the second time around because he did more of his wacky stage antics. He sang "Sweet Dreams" while walking on stilts! During "Antichrist Superstar," he burned a bible! Edgy!
The Pumpkins now have an all-male lineup. It's Corgan, Chamberlin and two other dudes. Not that I support traditional gender roles, but I do feel that the bassist for Smashing Pumpkins should always be a woman. SORRY, THAT'S HOW I WAS RAISED. They opened with "Cherub Rock," "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" and "Tonight, Tonight," all in a row. They also did "Zero," "Disarm," "1979," "Mayonaise," "Stand Inside Your Love," "Ava Adore," and some new songs (all of which were pretty good, actually) but they did not play "Today." Apparently that's been the encore at many of their shows this summer but they had to cut it out of the setlist because of the PNC Bank Arts Center's strict 11PM curfew. Rather, they closed with the song "United States" from 2007's
Zeitgeist. Forsaking your signature song for a ten-minute jam from one of your worst albums? Why not! During "Disarm" and "1979" two different fans crashed the stage. Billy remarked that the next person to come up on stage was getting a guitar upside the head. I think we now know whose idea it was to bring Jarrett back to TNA! Easily one of the top five concerts I have been to.
