Lipsitch predicts that within the coming year, some 40 to 70 percent of people around the world will be infected with the virus that causes COVID-19. But, he clarifies emphatically, this does not mean that all will have severe illnesses. “It’s likely that many will have mild disease, or may be asymptomatic,” he said. As with influenza, which is often life-threatening to people with chronic health conditions and of older age, most cases pass without medical care. (Overall, about 14 percent of people with influenza have no symptoms.)

Lipsitch is far from alone in his belief that this virus will continue to spread widely. The emerging consensus among epidemiologists is that the most likely outcome of this outbreak is a new seasonal disease—a fifth “endemic” coronavirus. With the other four, people are not known to develop long-lasting immunity. If this one follows suit, and if the disease continues to be as severe as it is now, “cold and flu season” could become “cold and flu and COVID-19 season.”

One of the people at my gym may have it. He is getting tested for it. Thankfully for me I never went within 20 feet of him, let alone 6. Hopefully his test comes back negative.

Edit: Now I'm hearing he wasn't tested because he "wasn't sick enough." This is despite him displaying symptoms and two doctors telling him he "probably" had it.

This may seem somewhat morbid, but at some point it will need to be enacted. At what point do we just accept this virus is going to be apart of the world moving forward and accept that people will die from it? Let's say in July despite social distancing and other measures people are still getting new cases, do we go back to allowing gatherings knowing it will cause outbreaks?

At some point our entire economy will collapse and it won't matter whether you're sick or well, as you'll have nothing. Not saying that point is July. But, at some point we may just have to go about our daily lives as before knowing that this is around and people will die. I don't know if our economy can survive more than about July with nothing being open.

Dude we aren't gonna go on with life when the mortality rate is this high. Over 200 million people in the world would die if China was telling the truth and we just pretended like this wasn't a big deal. If they weren't, and we go by Italy's numbers, it's far more. Italy and Spain's numbers also show that young people die at a far higher rate than what China said. Our job is to isolate until this is gone.

The economy will collapse after a month or two, that's something that's just going to happen and there's nothing anyone can do about it. The government is going to have to keep people afloat no matter what it takes, because if they didn't, there would definitely come a point where some really bad shit might happen.

I hope the people who laughed at me decided to take precautions for their own good.

But, at some point we'll have to. Let's say social distancing doesn't work, and the minute everyone goes back to gatherings outbreaks happen again. Economy is what drives a government, without it there isn't any medicine to be had or hospitals to go to, as those are a function of taxes.

Again, I'm not saying things should be open now. But, there is a point when we'll have to accept living with the mortality rate. There just is, and there isn't anyway around it.

It does work though. It worked in China. It's just a matter of how long we have to do it.

It worked in South Korea too.

I don't know if this has been featured here but it's a great story of why social isolation works (and why ignoring it fucks things up)

It's worked so far. But, China isn't fully forthcoming with a lot, and I question how much people are still being quarantined. If there is another outbreak in China that is a terrible sign, and basically means we're fucked.

It's kind of inevitable that there's a 2nd or maybe even 3rd outbreak cause we won't have a vaccine for another 12 to 18 months and it'll come back in the Fall inevitably. Then we'll have to isolate again.

That's not fair. I'm fully onboard with closing every thing off now. My point was what happens if it doesn't work. There is a point when stuff will need to be re-opened.

Massachusetts is up to "just" 218 cases but they've only tested like 1,400 people in total. I expect a dramatic uptick once more testing is able to be completed.

WITHOUT MITIGATION, the new coronavirus pandemic could kill as many as 2.2 million people in the U.S., according to a report from the Imperial College of London Covid-19 Response Team. Even taking critical steps such as social distancing of the entire population, isolation of the sick in their homes, and quarantining family members of the sick, the epidemic will likely soon overwhelm the critical care capacity of American hospitals, according to the report.

We are currently not mitigating, so does anyone who shit on the math I posted pages ago have anything to say now?

Welp... I could be temporarily out of a job as early as Friday/Saturday or next week at the latest if the suburban hotels also start shutting down. Even our hotel, which is about 30 minutes outside of Boston, is 275 rooms and we're seeing 20-25 people a night staying (peaking at maybe 11-13% at best) a night with more cancellations every day.
