Another thing this new Blade has going for it that I forgot about, is that they cast Mia Goth presumably as the villain. She's excellent and can play crazy so well as seen in Pearl and Infinity Pool.
 
The reviews for The Marvels are REALLY bad. Looking forward to seeing how the dust settles after this.
 
...was anyone expecting anything less, though? Captain Marvel was one of the worst reviewed MCU movies up to that point (with maybe Iron Man 2 or Thor: Dark World getting worse), the Ms. Marvel show got mediocre reviews, and the general feeling is that the MCU is stressing quantity over quality since Endgame.
 
The social media fan reactions from the screenings that were released before the actual reviews were mixed, and those are usually universally positive. Even Ant Man 3 and Rise of Skywalker had mostly positive reviews from those.

Also, the box office tracking is dipping into Morbius territory and seems like it will open much lower than The Flash. I've seen conflicting reports, but The Marvels either cost 200 million or 250 million. This could be similar to Black Adam flopping for DC where they reassessed and scrapped their universe and started the reboot with James Gunn. And, in hindsight, Black Adam opening to 60 plus million with a superhero the general audience wasn't that interested in or aware of, is a testament to The Rock as a box office draw. Especially after all of the superhero films from this year besides GOTG 3 and Spider Verse flopped worse than Black Adam.

Every review I've seen is basically: "Love the chemistry/Inman Vellani especially was a breakout performance/solid action" but "The script sucked/story was awful/typical lame villain" stuff. Not the most glowing reviews when it basically comes down to whether you're looking to see it for the actresses or the plot.
 
Also no offense to the actress playing the villain, as I'm sure she's good in other things, but she's Tom Hiddleston's wife. Wonder how she got that role. The final trailer hyping her as the next Thanos was hilarious. It also showed Captain America and Iron Man more than Ms. Marvel and played The Avengers theme while also showing Thanos.

Iman Vellani should be fine. Nearly every negative review says she's the best part of the movie and comes out unscathed. She has a ton of charm and charisma and will find roles after this. Her letterboxd account is also worth checking out for her 2 star review of Captain Marvel.

Man I can't believe a show that came out in 2021 didn't have a followup for four years. And I can't believe they can't put out a good movie in one go and have to keep editing things. No other movie gets made doing all that shit. You wanna know why their box office take is dying, there you have it.
 
I like a lot of MCU movies (I thought Black Panther, Iron Man, Infinity War/End Game, and The Winter Soldier were fantastic) and hope they can bounce back, but idk. Like, Blade is my biggest hope. And, it might be a miracle if it ends up good. Hope the Logan/Blade Runner 2049 writer really works his magic on that script. Deadpool 3 seems like a sure thing, but it has a lot going against it too.

For one, I assume the budget will probably be anywhere from 200 to 300 million compared to Deadpool 1 having a 58 million dollar budget and Deadpool 2 having a 110 million dollar budget. Shawn Levy is a terrible choice for director. I know him and Reynolds did Free Guy and that has its fans (I didn't like it at all), but his filmography is mostly family films and a lot of bad ones. Real Steel is the best movie he has made. Big Fat Liar is probably his second best movie lol. Kevin Feige will also probably do a lot of tinkering as well. It might not feel as natural and free flowing as the first two movies.

Still, Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine is as much as an ace in the hole as the MCU has right now. The general audience still likes Ryan Reynolds as well. I assume it will have a lot of nostalgia and cameos which could benefit it, but could also backfire like The Flash with Keaton Batman and all those cameos.

The Marvels skewed guys at 63% with men over 25 the biggest turnout at 45% and women over 25 at 24%. That latter demo gave the best recommendation grades of any demo at 61%.

There are ways to get women to superhero movies. Romance seems to work as Wonder Woman had the Diana/Steve storyline and appealed to women. Wonder Woman in the first was also a more interesting character than Captain Marvel, even though Brie is 1 million times the actress Gal is. Women also seem to want more vulnerable and relatable female characters. Not a superhero movie, but making Barbie have flaws and an identity crisis really worked for that movie and women loved it.

As shown by the big female turnout for Aquaman and the MCU up until after Endgame, Women also like seeing hunks and eye candy. The MCU up until 2021 or so was hunkamania and you had something for everyone. None of these strong stoic female superheros or snarky teen female superheros are appealing to them. What's funny is that they had a female character that women loved in Wanda, and they went and ruined her in Multiverse of Madness.

Going all in on female heroes without understanding what female viewers want, while also alienating a lot of your core male audience is a recipe for disaster.

Worth noting The Marvels only opened to $11.44 Million in China, a massive disappointment considering Captain Marvel opened to $86.52 Million there just 4 years ago. Yet another sign that these tentpole Marvel movies can't rely on specific foreign markets to majorly recoup the budget costs either if a film struggles domestically.
 
It's struggling in nearly every foreign market. It's pretty crazy.

So despite what the superfans/Disney execs are saying, it's not an incel/chud problem. People just aren't interested in this movie in general all over the world. And the women turn out is awful. Kids don't seem interested in this either. Are they gonna get blamed next?

I'm all for Ms. Marvel taking over overseeing the MCU from Kevin Feige. For real though, I peaced out about half way through Ms Marvel and find the character juvenile, but Iman Vellani is killing it with these press tour answers. Not blaming anyone like others involved have (Nia DeCosta), while pointing out mature and concise criticism about the MCU, without throwing anyone under the bus. I think she's going to bounce back from this bombing, and just do fine.

Less than a year ago, this dude's star was rising and him and Michael B. Jordan announced some interesting projects together. That's likely off the table now too.
 
So I still haven't gotten to "Loki season 2" but I bombed through "Echo" pretty fast this morning after NJPW since it was like 5 episodes and well under 5 hours.

I thought this was pretty decent. It wasn't a top level show but it was very watchable and I think some of the cast was pretty fun and it potentially set up some good street-level stuff for the future.

What I liked about this was aside from "Hawkeye" you didn't need to see anything else and they make sure to give you an actual quick idiot's guide to what happened in "Hawkeye" as it relates to Maya's story anyway.

Some of the fight choreography also felt more like the Netflix shows and they relied less on CGI overall.

As relates to Kingpin
The final episode shows him coming to the realization he could run for Mayor of NYC which will surely play into the rest of the street level MCU stuff and is something that was a lot of fun in the comics.

There was also a brief Daredevil cameo but it felt organic to the show.

This is a totally skippable entry unless you're a big Kingpin fan but it's the one of the only Marvel/DC things in a while I actually wasn't left feeling insulted by.
