Snell I guess is the front runner at 14-9. I don't think W-L record means as much anymore. Or anything at all.

Steele is 16-3 but doesn't have dominant K numbers.

Guess Senga finishes 3rd
Any chance somebody like a Spencer Strider sneaks in? He's 17-5 despite a "high" ERA and modest ERA+ at 120 but has such dominant strikeout numbers... 259 K in 169 IP is Pedro in '99/Randy Johnson in '01 levels of absurd.

The AL Wildcard is hilarious. The Jays got swept by Texas during the week, played like absolute shit, then managed to squeak out 3 wins against Boston while both the Rangers and Mariners got swept (and Houston lost 2 of 3) and they're right back where they were a week ago.

My expectations for the Red Sox since the beginning of this month have went from staying alive as long as possible in the playoff race to finishing above .500 and ahead of the Yankees to just beating last season’s win total (78) to …? They’re 6 for 71 in their last at bats with RISP. Everyone just wants to join Chaim Bloom in having some time off.

The San Diego Padres are on a four game winning streak for the first time this season. They’re the last team in MLB to achieve a streak of that length this season. $251.1 million well spent.

I'll never understand how reducing seating capacity by 25% benefits a community.

I'll add, with Oakland and Tampa Bay mostly resolving their stadium uncertainty, I think expansion becomes a likely proposition within the next decade. Nashville, Montreal, Portland, a few other cities, at least two will buy in.

I think Manfred outright said they were going to explore adding two expansion teams once the stadium situations got settled for the As and Rays.

Oddly, I think San Jose/Oakland will be a candidate for an expansion team too.

Corbin Carroll is the 1st rooke in MLB history to hit 25 HR and steal 50 bases in a season. Not too surprising a stat when you consider most base stealers were wiry, thin leadoff hitters or stuck in the 7-9 holes while the guys who could hit 20-30 HR were in the 3-5 lineup area and not expecting to steal bases.

Most players who were 20/20 or 30/30 hitters were truly generational talents back in the day.

Padres have now won 7 in a row and are 4.5 games of the final wild card spot. And their last games are against the Cardinals, Giants and White Sox. By god. This would be most hilarious thing ever.

Unless they won the World Series but maybe this generation needs its 2006 Cardinals.

The Padres, the Cubs and the Phillies are the only teams in the wild card chase with positive run differentials. It figures they would eventually make a run.

The Cubs are absolutely spent right now after busting so much ass in August. They are absolutely in a rut and I'd be surprised if they make it to the playoffs. The bullpen is completely overmatched without Adbert Alzolay and a couple other important guys went down. Still a much funner season than I was expecting.

Worst MLB Team Run Differentials

1932 Red Sox (-349)
1915 Athletics (-344)
2003 Tigers (-337)
2023 Athletics (-333)
2019 Tigers (-333)
1954 Athletics (-333)
1962 Mets (-331)
1936 A's (-331)

The A's need to get outscored by 17 runs in the next nine games to secure their place in baseball history. It may not be easy, they have three games against the Tigers and three against the Los Angeles Angels.

Idk if or how it would be measured in statistics but I feel like the 2023 Angels have one of the worst 2nd halves of all time of any team that went all in at the trade deadline. They went from Wild Card contender to heinously bad faster than you could say “Nacho butt.”

We haven’t a good Athl(ol)etics moment in a minute. For Miguel Cabrera’s farewell series in Oakland, manager Mark Kotsay gave him a $90* dollar bottle of sparkling wine. Miggy is a recovering alcoholic.

*yeah $90 for champagne is a lot for us (or maybe just me) but for an MLB team, it’s like me giving someone a Natty Daddy as a gift!

Having seen Strider pitch against the Phillies it’s honestly surprising his ERA is 3.81. Twenty one pitchers have qualified for the ERA title, Strider is fourth among them in lowest opponent OPS. And he’s second in WHIP. I don’t think ERA is telling the whole story. I’d really be tempted to vote for Strider, but despite Snell’s weaknesses going against Snell is probably getting too cute with it.

Orioles won their 100th game of the season, first time since 1980!
