I also have to imagine it's a lot harder to come back with pitcher injuries vs. hitter injuries.

It's worth noting everybody points to Babe Ruth but #1: He hit very sparingly when he was a pitcher initially and #2: He threw 200 less innings in 1918 than 1917 and offset that by getting almost 200+ more at-bats when hitting (which was still only around 315).

Realistically there was little over a calendar year when Ruth was filling both roles. Ruth only started three games for the Sox in August/September '19. Beyond the stresses on your player, I think the biggest issue in the modern game is that roster spots are valuable and it puts you in a real crunch to disrupt the system for one player. I mean at some point you have to point out that Ohtani's usage is not translating into wins for the organization.

Did a search trying to find great pitchers with short careers and I have this comparison:

Strasburg: 113-62, 127 ERA+
Sal Maglie: 119-62, 127 ERA+

Strasburg was a draft phenom who pitched his last MLB game at 33. Maglie didn't get established in the majors until he was 33. Both were among the best pitchers of their era.

(Maglie's interesting. He was the ace of the '51 Giants that beat the Brooklyn Dodgers for the pennant.)

I saw a stat on Sportscenter that Strasburg only started 8 games since signing his 7 Year, $245 Million deal in 2019 which has to be one of the worst ROI on a contract ever in baseball.

He also was only averaging 6 IP per start from 2012-2019 so it is hard to argue he was overused as a pitcher.

There's something that the pitch count advocates got completely wrong. Pitcher expected to go nine innings will pace themselves for nine. Limit them to 100 pitches, they are going to throw harder. Eighty pitches, still harder. They're not going to keep anything in reserve because professional sports are extremely competitive and you can't hold back when your career is on the line. No matter what limits you put on pitchers, they're going to get hurt.

The great CC Sabathia is returning to Milwaukee today to throw out the first pitch. I wasn't planning to go to a Brewers game this year but this changed that. My favorite pitcher of all time; that 2008 half season is god-like.

Oakland A's playoff update:

I think if the A's won all their games, the Blue Jays and Mariners lost all their games and the Red Sox and Yankees failed to clear 71 wins, the A's would still lose on tiebreakers. Tough luck. Maybe next year.

Looking at the run differential chase, the A's trail the '11 Boston Rustlers/Braves currently. That Boston team scored 699 runs, fourth in an eight team league. They allowed 1,021 runs. In the deadball era (1901-20), that's 132 more runs allowed than any other team. Given the low home run totals of the era, I have to think these Braves were among the worst fielding teams of all time.

I've said this for years.

We'll probably never see another 300 game winner in our lifetimes because pitch counts make it way too common for a pitcher to leave a 1-1 game no matter how well they're pitching.

It's honestly almost a miracle that a pitcher can even throw a solo no-hitter because of it.

(And by the way ESPN, stop telling me "no-no watch" when a team is using their third or fourth pitcher in the eighth, I literally couldn't care less than half the pitching staff combined for it)

Oakland As would probably be a third place team if they played in the AL Central.

Honestly, them moving to the Soldier Field site makes sense. Plus a retractable roof would probably help for those chilly ass April games and steamy ass July/August games.

The Yankees have not won a series since sweeping the Royals from July 21-July 23. A month and a week ago.

White Sox might as well move to Nashville if they are going to move from the south side of Chicago. Soldier Field is a way worse stadium compared to Guaranteed Rate. The city of Chicago owns Soldier Field. They get all the food and beverage revenue. Reinsdorf would be giving away money. That's one of the main reasons the Bears want their own stadium. What's wrong is the shitty players on the field, and shitty management. Fans don't show up for horrible teams.

I know watching a 2023 White Sox Vs As game has to be frustrating but this is not a justified reaction.
I guess the bullet came from a gun shot a mile from the stadium. Physics are crazy, y’all.

Won’t stop conservative dipshits from talking about HOW IT ISN’T EVEN SAFE TO GO TO A MLB GAME IN CHICAGO though.

So correction. Shooting did happen in the ballpark and Chicago PD asked the White Sox to stop the game as a precaution and The White Sox said “NO”!

This is the most Jerry Reinsdorf thing ever. God forbid we stop a game between two of the worst teams in baseball for a police investigation.

July 8: D'Backs are 1st in the NL West.
August 31: LA Dodgers have a 14.5 game lead

The KC Royals are well on their way to a franchise record for futility. They would need to go 16-11 to avoid losing 106 games. As bad as the Oakland A's are, they have already clinched a better record than the 1916 team.

The Cleveland Guardians, five back of the AL Central, claimed SP Lucas Giolito, RP Reynaldo Lopez and RP Matt Moore.

The Cincinnati Reds, one back from a wild card spot, claimed OFs Hunter Renfroe and Harrison Bader.

Randel Grichuk went unclaimed.

Guardians going all in, 5 games back on August 31st really only makes sense since it’s the AL Central. Plus they have three more games against the Twinkies (who they just took two out of three of against in Minnesota). It’s a lot less daunting than being five games back in the AL (or even NL) Wild Card rn.
