In 1997 they did the angle where Randy Anderson was fired after Souled Out over the Steiners-Outsiders match. Then after Flair wins control of the company from Bischoff at the end of 1998 he brings Anderson out and rehires him.

Was there some other angle where he was fired in between this? Because he absolutely worked matches in between this period, with the Hogan-to-Luger title change immediately coming to mind. Or did they just forget this was a thing?

After nWo members took control of the broadcast.[3] Eric Bischoff and the nWo bullied him around. At Souled Out, nWo referee Nick Patrick was bumped and knocked out. Anderson came from the crowd to count the pinfall and award the tag team championship to the Steiner Brothers.[4] Bischoff fired Anderson for interfering, but then decided to allow Anderson to wrestle Patrick to get his job back. Anderson defeated him by using a foreign object, from fellow WCW referee Jimmy Jett. Immediately following this match, Eric Bischoff reversed the decision and fired both Jett and Anderson.[5] According to story line, Anderson was reinstated and reffed his first match, after being fired, on the March 10, 1997, episode of Nitro.

In 1999 when Ric Flair became the President, they ran a story line that Randy Anderson was still fired, and then became reinstated by Ric Flair, never mentioning that he had beaten Nick Patrick for his job back in 1997 or that the decision was ultimately reversed.

Minus a comedy gimmick, I wonder what the closest thing anyone else had to this?

Al Snow was Avatar, Shinobi and Leif Cassidy in short order.... all different "guys".

Jack Victory as himself, a Russian Assassin, Blackmailer and _______?

Moondog Rex, Smash and a Shadow?

Glen Jacobs spread his over 2 years

Brody posted the results in the Attitude Era thread but this was 25 years ago yesterday:

How often do you get two of the greatest angles of all time in one night? WCW was putting out bangers all summer but they never topped this episode imo

Fun pod from Zellner and company. Biggest thing I learned was JJ Dillon told Vince in late Jan 89 that he could deliver Luger and Windham to the WWF. Luger talked to the WWF and things got as far as Luger being given a start date in early March.

Where do you see Luger fitting in WWF 89?
Macho and Zeus have the main event heel spot on lock down til August.
Maybe Rude's IC title win gets kiboshed to set up Luger vs Warrior for Summerslam?
Luger takes Big John Studd's spot when Studd quit/is fired and works Andre in some awful B show main events?
What gimmick does Vince saddle him with?
As much of a home run as it feels like this would be, they ended up actually doing next to nothing with Windham. He never made a SNME/PPV and I don't think he ever even got a program before he quit in Oct/Nov.

He's Mr. Perfect.
Hennig took on the gimmick in Oct 88.

It would probably knee cap Hennig though if Luger came in as a heel.

Luger may have more room to run as a face, except Hogan and Warrior have the top gigs.

Andre, Bossman, Akeem, Powers of Pain, Dibiase eventually, Savage, Perfect etc

Year one might go something like he comes in with Heenan and feuds with Hercules first. Not only for the body, but for Herc's revenge tour.

After Summerslam, they can go headstrong into Luger vs Hogan teams at Survivor Series. Cash out Hogan vs Luger at the Rumble. Luger gets a reheating at WM 6 by smashing Tito/Snuka/Garvin/Duggan or somebody and begins the build to face Warrior at Summerslam. A little risky to have him lose a couple of big title matches but maybe a face turn can propel him up as a draw after that.

I can see them at least modifying it in some fashion for Luger, though. Hennig was still "Mr Perfect" Curt Hennig for months, too. Easy to roll it back, Kane The Undertaker style, if they feel like Luger is a sure thing. But he's going to be a knockoff Orndorff at minimum.

Luger has to be a heel if he wants to survive, though. The face roster is pretty stacked and I don't see Vince giving Luger the rocket push, nor do I see Hogan standing for it. Best case is a combination of Dusty and Garvin's runs, because there's no way they get their pushes the same if Luger comes in. Luger/Valentine would be dope, though, as would Luger/Bad News.

If he's a heel, he's Perfectly Wonderful Narcissist Luger. Definitely takes the spot of someone like Bravo or HTM by that point. Won't get Rude's push, and nor should he. He's the version of Rude, or Hennig, that Hogan wanted, and would get right to the main event. Probably even gets Jimmy Hart. He's definitely getting the IC title after Warrior, and definitely is out of the company once the steroid scandal starts.

Lex and the WWF crossed paths at pretty much the best time possible from Lex's standpoint.
I’m not sure if I agree. Especially considering how poorly Lex’s IRL WWF run went. If you put Lex Luger in SID’s spot in the Summer of 1991 and eventually do the Hogan turn and match at WrestleMania VIII, it would have been better than what we got.

You could even have him turn face again on the USS Intrepid. “Hulk was right. I do love America!”

I guess I just don't see a spot in pre-New Gen WWF you could realistically stick him in that would have better with him than the person who was actually in that spot. ("Realistically" meaning the upper mid/main event spots previously discussed, he was quite clearly above a Ronnie Garvin-level push, for example.) I agree too that he has to be a heel to have any chance. Sid still has aura standing next to Hogan and Warrior; Lex not so much.

I actually do like the suggestion of him in the Bravo spot against Warrior, but man I loved Bravo and Quake so much together I hate to think of that time not existing.

Like Luger's ceiling as a face is between Herc and Dusty. Probably settles around Tito level.

That said Luger and Roma are a superior Power and Glory.

I have to say that I’m glad Foley has kept his hair intact. An aging Mick is bad enough but a bald Mick would be too sad even for old timer standards

The difference is that with Luger it wouldn't be a nothing tag team. They'd definitely get a push. But it's still a waste.

WCW thinking their mostly southern audience would cheer a group of rappers over a bunch of good ole boys is one of those LOLWCW moments that actually made TV better (and funnier!).

Bischoff and Nash honestly had a germ of a good idea bringing in the No Limit Soldiers. People forget how huge they were in 1999…especially in the South, @Epic Springs , you elitist Yankee!

Trying to draw in a hipper, more diverse audience is a good idea IN THEORY but the way WCW presented it did nothing to attract any NLS fans and just aggravated their core fanbase.

Besides Atlanta, were WCW even running the territories where NLS were huge in the 90s (NOLA, Houston?)
