Only problem is Vince Russo's tastes were stuck in "horny, angry teenager from 1998" mode and even by 2000, he seemed just as out of touch as Cornette's "NAME ON THE MARQUEE IS RASSLIN, YOU STUPID FUCKS!" tastes.

Well, yeah. He also didn't realize that WCW attracted a different audience than the WWF did. There's that legend of him getting market research of the shows done, what the crowds did/didn't like, and throwing them out because he didn't agree with the audience.

I was shook when Russo jumped. It was in the newspaper and that stuff was never in an actual, real-life newspaper. That was shit Vic Venom talked about, bro.

His presence on TV is the worst thing about 2000 WCW. I can take stupid shit but he was actively ruining everything. Book all the pole matches you want, piss off Japan, whatever. Just don't be as terrible as Russo on the air.

Russo's probably dumb enough to try reopening a Blockbuster in 2021.
'90s/'00s nostalgia is in, bro.

It was great unintentional humor to see Russo go from "Why would a writer put himself on TV?" to "OK. I'll make myself a character but I'm not going to show my face." to "That's it. I'm going to make myself the #1 heel (and World Champion)!" over the course of his WCW run.

Someone else here said it but I feel like in an alternate universe, Russo would've made a good super annoying undercard heel manager but building the program around him as a heel authority figure? Cheezus crust, to me, that is the DEFINITION of "go away heat".

I liked the Powers That Be idea and the notion of two big fucks like the Harris' as Creative Control. There's potential in that concept. You just lump that idea with Cyrus and the Network in ECW and you have something potentially special, but Russo was just bad at stories past the first act as it was.

Russo as a manager would be too much. I just hate looking at him and hearing his voice. Wrestling hell is the timeline where he manages the Nasty Boys in 1999.

Is there more random WCW Bullshit than Brian Knobbs getting a comeback as a SINGLES WRESTLER in '99/'00? WTH was that shit? I don't even know if you can blame it on Hogan since IIRC, he came back during one of Hogan's many hiatuses during that era.

I was so mad. I would catch bits and pieces of WCW as it was and suddenly fucking Knobbs is on TV, and Knobbs is maybe in my top five most hated. Guy is everything embarrassing about wrestling in one person.

I actually didn't hate (didn't like but didn't completely hate) Knobbs with short hair, in the flak vest & camo/annoying sidekick to Fit Finlay era. If he had returned like that, his comeback would have been random & unnecessary but not totally horrible. But the fact that he returned with the stupid fucking mullet in the Nasty Boys outfit really illustrates why Summer/Fall of '99 is probably my least favorite era of WCW. Yes even worse than '00-'01.

To be fair, he was really only used in the WCW in their hardcore division which was barely a step above Saturday Night obscurity.

You have a dopey roid monster willing to do comedy and his name is Al Green. They could've gone so much further than THE DOG.

He drank from a toilet. That would have gotten Horshu over. It would not have worked for Ron Powers. Powers needed a Fred Flintstone like club.

Fact that Corny thought a guy from the global media epicenter who used to run a video store and regularly watched the top rated programs of the day was somehow wrong about what audiences wanted to see is still laughable to me.
To be fair, Vince edited him. Russo wanted to run Taker vs Kane the night after Kane's debut IIRC Corny's story correctly.

I've been looking at old Stern stuff and got to Kanyon's interviews. He really comes off as a good guy and entirely too good a sport. First interview is interesting and he's fucking bitter but rightly so. Tried to get Vince on the phone but believe it or not he wasn't there.

Second time, as soon as he sits down, Flair calls in to bury him and how his "lifestyle choice" ruined his career. That and be annoyed he can't pimp his book. You can hear him get pissed off when Stern tells him he had Hogan on because he knows who Hogan is and doesn't know who Flair is.

About 4:55, if it isn't marked, is when Flair comes on.

My team; Public Enemy (I feel like their WCW run gets a bad rap. Granted by the time Thunder started, they were definitely in the $1 act category but still a fine undercard team), Mike Enos, Rick Fuller, Tokyo Magnum, Alex Wright, Wrath, Lex Luger.

Lex Luger Vs Rick Fuller, Wrath Vs Mike Enos, and The Public Enemy Vs Alex Wright & Tokyo Magnum is a fine start to a random '98 Thunder.

I almost want to just get the entire 2 dollar row and think about everything else later.

Ah let me think

Raven, Meng, Alex Wright, Tokyo Magnum, Rick Fuller, Mike Enos

Fuller vs Enos in a Coal Miner's Glove Match, Tokyo Magnum vs Alex Wright in a Dancing Fools Explode match, and Raven vs Meng in Raven's Rules is my episode of MTV Beach Brawl.
