Re: Massacres that don't warrant a thread

Four Marines were killed and three other people were injured today in a shooting in Chattanooga, Tennessee, according to the mayor and military officials. The gunman was also killed, the mayor said.

The injured individuals include a police officer who suffered a leg wound and one person who is in critical condition, according to law enforcement officials. The third injured was treated and released.

The shooter who died in the incident has been identified as 24-year-old Muhamed Youssef Abdulazeez, several federal officials confirmed to ABC News.

Chattanooga Suspect Wasn’t on Law Enforcement Radar

A senior U.S. official briefed on the incident said that Abdulazeez was born in Kuwait and the investigation is underway. Officials are investigating whether he was inspired by ISIS or other terrorist groups.

"They've run an initial check on him," the source told ABC News. "Right now there is nothing popping early in the system on him -- but that could change in time. They are still checking multiple other databases on him."

President Obama said that he has been briefed on the shootings and expressed his condolences to the families of the slain Marines.

"My main message right now is obviously the deepest sympathies of the American people to the four Marines that have been killed," he said to reporters in the Oval Office. "It is a heartbreaking circumstance for these individuals ... to be killed in this fashion."

There were two scenes of the shooting -- one at a Naval Operation Support Center and an Armed Forces Recruiting Center that houses an Army and Marine recruiting office -- though all of the injuries are believed to have occurred at the Naval Operation Support Center, according to federal officials.

Didn't hear about this until Tek told me about it.

Re: Massacres that don't warrant a thread

I saw a facebook post where someone put this dude's picture up and posted "We're getting carry permits!", and it made me think a bit.

I was listening to a podcast about public shootings, and they brought up an interesting number: in cases where an armed civilian tries up to stop a spree shooter, their effort succeeds only about 4% of the time. In fact, they said, more often it just winds up with the vigilante getting shot or otherwise making things worse. In almost every single case, either the cops get the guy or he kills himself; armed civvies are never much help. They generally don't have the training to be effective even if they do have a gun, and often aren't psychologically prepared to actually shoot someone and take a life (which makes a bigger difference than most people think, according to combat vets).

Can you guys think of any situations were civilians with guns stopped a spree shooter? Hell, I'm having a hard time coming up with any examples of shooters being taken down by not-cops in any situation, except for the Gabby Giffords dude who was dog-piled by twenty people at once.

Oh if I asked Dadaramu I'm sure he'd provide a list a mile long of bullshit and made up stories that he's convinced are real where a citizen stopped a criminal.

It's sad that this incident will just give more fuel to the hateful right that'll scream more about Iran, Obama, Gun Rights, ISIS and how this shit wouldn't be happening if a real American was in office.

Re: Massacres that don't warrant a thread

I'm seeing a whole lotta "we need to go BACK into war in the Middle East because one guy in Chattanooga shot some people" rhetoric online. How has everyone so quickly forgotten that we were all BEGGING to finally bring all the troops home FOR YEARS over there?

Also, important question that nobody seems to be asking: where the hell did Mohammod get his guns from? Why haven't I seen anyone addressing this? Could it perhaps be that the answer is "he legally bought them and passed every security measure that the law has in place"? Also also: were all of his victims really unarmed? I find it hard to believe that five out of five Marines would go anywhere without a single gun between them.

I know exactly where that is. Got my teeth fixed at a place down the street from there earlier this year. Of course nothing will happen.

If everyone just had an automatic grenade launcher on them, this whole thing wouldn't have happened.

Reportedly white gunmen (as many as 3), dressed in paramilitary gear shot up a place that provides social services to handicapped people.

I don't even have words...

The way he responded to the question initially, like she was disrespectful for even bringing it up, was such an obvious shutdown tactic. Trying to play it off like he was being respectful to the situation was slimy as hell. Fuckin' scum.

This train is starting to get rolling for real, as Limbaugh today straight up said that terrorists come out of the Democratic party.

I suppose they have to argue *something* (no matter how inane) since the whole argument regarding the deterrence effect of "No one would ever think about opening fire on a crowd in a gun-friendly region where plenty of 'good guys' are likely to be armed" took a big hit with this unfortunate event

Except, of course, that he was stopped by an armed churchgoer while he was in the act of finishing off the wounded and youngest instead of waiting for him to run out of ammo or for the sheriffs to arrive from who knows where. Just because it's a gun friendly area doesn't mean some unbalanced idiot with a violent past wouldn't try it.

Re: Massacres that don't warrant a thread

It's been said a gazillion times and will be a gazillion more (unfortunately with little chance of changing anything) but even just a few common sense changes would make a big difference. This guy slipped through a bunch of holes and never should have owned a gun. There needs to be serious changes in the way mental health is dealt with and how gun purchases are made. Things like bump stocks need to be banned. Certain kinds of guns should be banned and I'd also at the very least improve access to training programs in how to properly care for and store guns if not make them mandatory.

ah yes, I forgot about this whole well-publicized part of the story while discussing the concept of "deterrence effect"

also, guy was wearing full-on tactical gear so he knew what he was getting into; if anything he was probably welcoming a firefight going in, response to counter-shooter notwithstanding

The good guy with a gun didn't do anything for seven minutes while the shooter walked from pew to pew blasting everyone in the head. There are eight kids and 25 people dead because some guy bought guns. Period. Why should anyone have to be armed to go somewhere in this country and not be worried that you might have to kill someone after they murder 25 people?

Because the gun industry is a multibillion dollar one and the US will never be one to get in the way of a profit making business. Add in the overwhelming public disinformation and self-styled tough guys who get to feel a little power in their powerless lives and there you go. There's absolutely no other way to explain why more people are armed as weapons become deadlier and easier to use.

Oh, you're armed in case the guv'mint ever gets out of control? How much good will all your assault rifles and pistols do against a fucking tank?

There are no rational reasons for the US's obsession with guns but obsessions are by definition irrational. Even our language on the matter betrays a subconscious acceptance of this situation. "Gun control" gives implicit acceptance to the prevalence of these weapons in our lives, because all we need to do is control the issue, not eradicate it. "Control" also hits a sensitive spot in these pricks' minds. "YOU CAN'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO I'MMA GO BUY FIFTEEN OF THOSE MOTHERFUCKERS... FOR PROTECTION"

It's funny because I got into an argument with a guy one time about the point you make in your second paragraph. He insisted because of how urban warfare goes in the Middle East that they wouldn't be able to completely crush the people and also most soldiers wouldn't turn on the people anyway. That was the whole crux of his argument on it.

Also as to your third paragraph. I agree. It sucks. I remember reading an article about a guy that sells those smokestacks for pickup trucks saying business was booming before the election because people were afraid Obama/Hillary would take that away to protect the environment so people who didn't even want them were rushing in to get them as a middle finger to the Democrats.

I also met a guy on my honeymoon that worked as a machinist building suppressors for shotguns and he said they were all hoping Hillary would be elected because she was driving business.

Re: Massacres that don't warrant a thread

Two alternate takes I have regarding the notion of 2A vs. the government

1) The way things have been and seem to be going I worry far more about the potential future of private & corporate tyranny than government tyranny

2) I feel this last year has shown that a good chunk of the "I need my guns to stave off the government" crowd would be perfectly complicit with a tyrannical government as long as it fit their ideology, perhaps even to the extreme of taking up arms to defend such a government rather than fight it

Re: Massacres that don't warrant a thread

I know I go to this well more often than not, but it's valid: a white president made these fucks feel better, like things were the way they were supposed to be. There's absolutely no other explanation for the equivocation and defense of a government that downright vows to do more to curb civil liberties and freedom of speech. Nothing else explains the virulence with which Obama was despised by so much of the public. Yes, I despise Shitbag, but never in the same way White America hated the mere presence of a black man as president. People straight up armed themselves in droves, that's how powerful their fear of a black man in charge was.
