So what were some of your favorite MJ songs?

I know there's Thriller, Billy Jean, Beat It, etc. but this will always be my favorite MJ song:

Smooth Criminal

BTW - 3:50-4:12 was one of the cooler moments that I remember from my younger childhood.

The only other iconic music figure left that I can think of that has an appeal to most people would be Garth Brooks.
Just like rap, large parts of the population despise country music. Vapid college girls hate both.

At least a majority of people would know Friends in Low Places and to lesser extent, Thunder Road.

I've never heard the former, and "Thunder Road" is Springsteen, you doofus. That a lot of people might know a song or two by a niche star is not a ringing endorsement for whatever point you're struggling to make. Tons of people recognize that "I'll Be Missin' You" is by Puff Daddy, but that doesn't change the fact that lots of people don't like or actively dislike Puff Daddy.

"Thunder Rolls" is the song Red Baron was looking for. Quite a harrowing video for that one, as I recall.

In England it seems despite the best laid plans of their tabloids, public opinion never shifted on him like it did over here. At first I thought that maybe people there are less susceptible to gossip and unproven accusations, but then I remembered that people over there really didn't seem to mind when Bill Wyman banged a 13-year-old. Sure, it was something of a scandal, but a Michael Phelps Smokes Pot scandal, not an O.J. Killed His Wife scandal. Makes you think.

The Black Community's stance on MJ and OJ never wavered either. To this day, my grandmother insists that OJ didn't kill Ron and Nicole.

Has your grandmother read the book If I did it? Not that I would expect it to get her to change her mind, but I'd be curious how she would dismiss it and still claim he's innocent.

I don't if know she has read OJ's book or not, but even if she did I don't think it would matter. A lot of older black people believe OJ was innocent.

My favorite MJ songs (avoiding the usual suspects) are:

Dirty Diana, Black or White and Human Nature.

I don't know Czech, but I don't think any rapper, let alone many artists reached the success he had during the early to mid 90's. While Country music hit or missed with a majority of people, Garth was able to sustain a solid fanbase throughout his career even if he has not released an album in 10 years.

I would easily say Jay-Z and Garth Brooks are on the same level of stardom. But yet, neither are big enough to say they are true icons. Musically, they sold a ton. And for their genres they are the last major acts left. However, it seems half the country HATES rap. And it seems half the country HATES country. So that is stopping them. From being "A" level stars. They are near the top of "B" level stars. But not reaching the top.

"A" level: Michael Jackson, Frank Sanatra, Elvis, Beatles, John Lennon.
"B" Level: Mariah Carey, Garth Brooks, Jay-Z, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr.

I don't like Country, I can name a few artist. I can name a few songs. I can't put two and two together for hardly anyone. That doesn't help make them a major iconic star. Same thing people who don't like rap can do. They can name some artist. They can name some songs. How many can name song and artist?

As for MJ, one thing that's always amazed me is how nearly every, if not all, of the tracks from Thriller and Bad were released as singles at some point, and still get some run today.

Other than those, and Boston's s/t album, are there any other albums to achieve such a feat?

Born in the U.S.A. had seven top ten singles, but only maybe four or so are still played on classic rock stations.

As sad as it is, I think the CD with the most hits in the last few years was The Dutchess by Fergie.

London Bridge, Fergalicious, Clumsy, Big Girls Don't Cry, Glamorous all got major radio play.

Fergalicious should have never been recorded on the premise that she combined her name with the word delicious. If I called myself JHawklicious I'd be lynched.

Just as sad is the fact that Nickelback's All The Right Reasons also had a ridiculous number of singles:

Photograph, So Far Away, Saving Me, Animals, Rock Star, If Everyone Cared.

Those all got major release and two more got released but didn't fare well.

I was going to post a longish explanation detailing yet again why selling a lot of fucking records means very fucking little when it comes to making a lasting cultural impact, but why bother? This is the most exasperating music thread any incarnation of this board has seen in years.
