I indirectly (and somewhat inadvertently) compared 9/11 to Michael Jackson's death just about an hour ago. I was just remarking how the weather always seems to be nice during really traumatic/bizarre days.

Yeah. Remember those floods in Bangladesh? When the skies cleared up... bright sunshine! Creepy shit, man.

I always saw him as two different people. There was eighties Jackson and then there was the incredibly creepy, unhinged white guy after that.

I'm not really that shocked at this: After the trial, even though he was found not guilty, that was it for him, career wise. Most people (not everyone, though) weren't going to be able to look at him the same way, and he was past his prime. I figured he'd self destruct, but I didn't think it would happen so soon.

As a tribute, my band performed "The Ballad of Michael Jackson" last night at a gig. Comments of "too soon" echoed throughout the club.

Having watched some of those videos, I'm surprised at how many of them are really, really, really, shit. lip synching is poor, dancing makes little sense, and the majority of them have a lot of wind blowing. The only good one is 'Leave me Alone'

I wasn't too concerned when I read on Billboard.com that he was hospitalized urgently, but then a couple of hours later the sad news struck. I was not a full on fan of MJ but I did enjoy quite a few of his songs, specially stuff like "Billy Jean", "Beat it" and "Smooth Criminal." It's a real shame.

RIP Michael Jackson.

Which generation? The last time he had a #1 hit had to be like 15 years ago. And his biggest era happened when I was...4 or 5? And I'm gonna be 30 in two months.
Anyone who was around to hear any of his major hits (probably up to Scream in 1995). Anyone who grew with the ridiculous media coverage (both positive and negative) about him. Basically anyone who grew up with pop culture from 1982-on was part of his generation.

I don't feel even slightly connected to his era. To me he was the guy who got creepier looking and had some weird court settlements. When you really think about it...you probably start to get into music at around, I don't know...6 or 7 maybe? Which would mean that there are people who can legally drink who would have been about that old when Scream came out. The guy wasn't musically relevent for a long time now.

I'm younger than you and there's no doubt in my mind I grew up in the Jackson era.
I'm 26...the first 10 years of my life was where Jackson was larger than life. Nobody since Jackson has stepped up to be "the star of our generation".
Most singers who are famous now are Jackson clones and wannabes.
Like the Beatles, he will never be musically irrelevent. My little cousins listened to old MJ.

He wasn't big to you but to "your" generation...different story.

People were gathered around the wrong Michael Jackson star yesterday. There's another one, a So-Cal radio DJ.
THE Michael Jackson's star was covered by the red carpet for the premiere of Bruno at the Chinese Theater.
I'm guessing that's what they meant by it...or, most likely, it's a typo ;D

Jimmy Kimmel was making fun of that last night. They had a camera crew at the other star where people were gathered around and singing out of tune.. they had a close up of one freaky looking dude.. like he was the illegitimate son of Beatlejuice (from Stern) or something.

"the first 10 years of my life was where Jackson was larger than life"

Yeah...for my first 10 years of life I wasn't really being influenced by what music was going to define me. Most of that was spent learning to tie shoes and read and do math and such. I'm quite positive that "my" generation of music had to be the grunge fad...as it was a movement that swept trough right as I was in middle/high school and I still have friends that dress like it never ended.

Jackson was huge when I was a kid. I was 5 when Thriller came out (1982) and being a huge horror fan at a very young age - I was all over that shit.. and so was pretty much every kid at school. That said, I never touched anything of his past that album.

Maybe it was actually a fat construction worker who died but for some reason they believed it was MJ.

So are you saying that Michael Jackson is in the Carribean right now laughing it up with Tupac, Elvis, and Adolf Hitler on a job well done?

We should have known that a mystical being sent from the far reaches of the universe to bring the human race heretofore unheard of singing and dancing would have a short shelf life. This bites.

Exactly, grunge FAD.

MJ's music has remained relevant to many people worldwide to this very day, even without having done anything in about a decade. That is someone who is THE star of this generation.

That's not this generation though. He peaked when I was 5. That's not my fault. The Beatles music is still everywhere...but they also weren't topping the charts when I was listening to music.

A guy who hasn't had a hit in a decade and a half just can't be the poster guy for this generation. Unless we're all 40 all of the sudden.

It's not about hits. It's about being relevant and popular. Jackson never fell out of being relevant. Every time there was a hint of a comeback, it was surge his popularity again. Everything he did got press and attention. Hits or not, he was always a major cultural figure. And even when I really first got into music in 1996-ish, I remember Jackson being played quite often. I'm only twenty three, and I can say for certain that I feel he was the biggest star of my "generation".

I'm sure if he could have, he would have gladly chosen to not be popular or relevant at certain times in his life. He never got lucky in that regard.

Never fell out of being relevent? I'll argue that all day. Maybe it's because I was old enough to remember the tale end of his actual heyday...but trust me...this guy hasn't been relevent in a long time. There are a lot of people who's music stays relevent, hell I'm pretty sure I hear more Skynyrd on the radio than anything else and they died years ago... But being a legend doesn't make you the icon of every generation. If that was the case...then Elvis is everyone's elvis.

bps. we seem to be the same age, turning 30 in August. He's "our" generation, he might be more popular or was more loved by people 5-6 years older than us, but he's still our generation.

See I don't see that. When I really was getting into music it was the late 80s, so he even still had some hits to come, but so much of my life has been spent without his music being what you think of when you think or hear of him...and his music hasn't exactly been everywhere you look for a long time now. I don't see how you can look at a guy who hasn't really even been around in any fashion for most of that time (and hasn't had a hit in the last half of it) and be like "that's our guy!"
