Going by the PS3 update page, their update is a little under 200MB. Xbox's is closer to 100MB, and given the efficiency of their game update process (they're typically under 10MB, in my experience), it might be less than that doing it from the console. I believe they also include system update files on many first-party game discs—I'm pretty sure Gran Turismo 5, and one of the Halo games did. I don't know if Nintendo does this. They don't seem to have a method to download updates outside of the console from initial glance at their (also currently slow) website.
I don't know why it's that big. From watching some Giant Bomb stuff, it seemed like some core functionality was not on the launch units out of the box, and that's silly. I can't recall anything other than Wii backwards compatibility, and some of the TVii stuff. Nintendo needs to cater to their audience a little better; broadly speaking, I don't think Wii owners are nearly as tech savvy as Xbox and PlayStation owners, and their update process is the least friendly to deal with.
