I went to the first show of NJPW's Fall US tour at the beautiful Lowell Memorial Auditorium in scenic Lowell, Massachusetts last night. God damn. That was easily in Top 5 maybe Top 3 best shows I've ever been to and probably the best house show I've ever been too. Just a spectacular card that was masterfully paced and the way the action escalated throughout the night was frankly beautiful.
The crowd was super hot throughout the night and I was amused how for the most part, kind of behaved like a Japanese wrestling audience with very limited dumb chants. Just perfect. It wasn't totally sold out but I'd say it was 90% full. Having been to 3 or 4 NJPW/ROH supershows, the difference in the level of efforts between those and this was night and day. It was crazy seeing Naito actually trying for one. It was really close to maximum effort for most of the guys and way better than a WWE house show level of effort.
I loved the gaijin special guest stars that they brought in (well, except TJP). The Rock N Roll Express were probably most over act of the night besides Okada and Tanahashi. They had an extremely fun comedy match with Chase Owens & Jado (who is somehow 10x more washed than Ricky & Robert despite being 10-15 years younger). But Jado did the funniest Flair flop I've ever seen. He just winced and shuffled around like an old man who had eaten some bad clams for like a minute before falling on his face.
I liked or loved every match on the card. Main event was a six man tag that had Okada, Tanahashi, and Kota Ibushi Vs Naito, Sanada, and Evil that was probably MOTN. A very solid 20-25 minute six man tag. I went to the bathrooms but I overheard one of the babyfaces screaming on the mic about how excited he was to eat at Taco Bell after the show during the postmatch babyfaces speech. Also I ran back in time to see Tanahashi gave us THREE air guitar solos.
NJPW Tag Team Titles match between Roppongi 3K Vs GoD and Tomohiro Ishii & Amazing Red Vs Shingo Takagi and BUSHI were close runner ups. I also personally loved Lance Archer Vs Ren Narita. Just a really great big man/plucky rookie babyface match. I really hope Lance Archer resigns with NJPW cause I think he could be a great midcard heel for them for the next few years and I don't think any other promotion come close to utilizing him better.
Really solidified my opinion that NJPW is, far and away, still the best promotion in the world in 2019. Even their B level effort blows away most A shows.
