Bought Sakura Wars, So Long My Love for the PS2. There's a Wii version as well, but the PS2 version comes with a few bonuses. Since I'm too lazy to find the review thread, I'm just doing this here.
For those who don't know, Sakura Wars (Sakura Taisen in Japan) is a long running series in Japan of Strategy RPGs. There are a total of 5 games in the main series, with Sakura Wars, So Long My Love being the final installment. This game is a strategy RPG, but also plays out like a visual novel, as there are no random battles or non-story battles.
The story begins with you taking control of Lt. Shinjiro Taiga. Nephew of Commander Oogami (lead hero of all previous games) of the Royal Imperial Troop Flower Division. Shinjiro believes that he had been accepted into the Flower Division. After meeting with his uncle, he finds out that he has not been assigned to the Flower Division, but actually has been assigned to the new Star Division that is now located in New York City.
The purpose of the Star Division and its original, the Flower Division, is to keep the world's Pneuma (think positive energy) isn't turned into Dark Pneuma and make sure that the people within the city are happy and able to forget about their worries within the Little Lip Theater while the Star Divison performs plays and musicals during down time from battling evil creatures. ...also gotta say its a great way to earn profits to keep it running!
A unique feature to the Sakura Wars series (though originally introduced in 3, I believe) was the ability to gain stats by improving your relationships with your team mates, and the people around you within a time period. Like with all other Sakura Wars and other visual novels, your team mates are all (mostly) girls.
To do this you will need to play with the LIPS system. Yes, its called that, stands for something, but God knows what it is and I'm not about to look it up. The LIPS system is broken down into three parts: 1) Choice - Depending on your answer, your relationships can change from good to bad. Some options only become available after meeting certain requirements. There are even some cases in which you want to let time run out and not give an answer. The most common LIPS. 2) Analog - This allows you to commit a certain percentage to an action or what you say. Its crucial to make sure that the percentage amount is the correct amount for the situation. 3) Stick - This will require you to move the analog sticks in a certain direction to achieve a task. These can range from repairing lights, whacking a few baseballs, etc.
Save points are infrequent, so if you get a wrong question or did something wrong, you've got a long way to kill to get the answer you wanted. You'll hear two different sounds if you got it right or correct. There are also some situations in which you'll get a LIPS and you'll have multiple division members on screen which will effect multiple people's relationships towards you. Sometimes the neutral choice is the only way to go.
As you've already read in the opening post, the story is full of cheese. But you know what? Its flavor is fandu. You've got a harem, steam punk, re-written history, campy voice acting on purpose (English as well as Japanese), robots, sky fights, etc. Because Sakura Wars, So Long My Love is the final installment of the franchise (unfortunately), it only make sense they go out as a swan song of what people loved about the series. I will warn that mileage will vary depending on how much cheese you like.
The music isn't going to blow you away, nor is there any single piece that will stick out. However it all works and adds to the atmosphere of the story and its cheesy goodness.
In terms of graphics, there's no cream, but its still got a nice layer of cake for you to enjoy. The artwork is solid and delivers facial expressions and the situations well. It probably doesn't help that we're now spoiled by PS3 games and Wii games that are much better looking than the PS2 stuff. This game is also quite a few years old, since it came out before the PS2 was dead.
The game play will drive you nuts. And that's more the LIPS system than the battles themselves. Since there is a timer, you will be pressured to respond. Unfortunately, since the save points are infrequent you screw up, you'll need to backtrack heavily. I remember I spent one whole hour and had to go back to my save because I made a critical error. But that's also half the fun too is finding out what things work out and what things don't.
Combat is actually very straight forward. As previously mentioned there are no levels, which means no xp, meaning you don't need to worry about having to have X kill Z to level up, so you can plan with that in mind. There are different things you can do in combat:
Move - You can move pretty much as long as you want, till your action bar runs out.
Normal - Allows you to do a normal attack. Combine 5 action bars for a special combo that grants a little more damage to the string. Takes 1 action bar.
Special Move - As long as you have the SP for it, you can do the character's special move that will nearly always blow away some minor annoyance. Takes 3 action bars.
Joint - These allow for two team members to join together to launch an assault on their opponent(s). Requires SP and takes 3-5 action bars on person(s)
Healing - Requires SP, heals a good amount of HP. Takes 1-2 action bars depending on person.
Defend - ...seriously not explaining this. Takes two action bars.
Anyways, I found it fun and I'd really recommend this fandu.
