Its interesting. So much of the discourse around Gillis is how terrible/"woke" SNL is for firing him and how that was way better for his career. It'll be funny to see all the people who say they never watch the show say how much better this one is when it'll be about 90% the same as any other episode.

It'll be interesting to see how Lorne and co. threads the needle on this one and if Shane is help to pull it off. He has become a massive name in the (admittedly rapidly growing) stand up comedy bubble but to a lot of people, he is just known as the guy that got fired from SNL after a day for saying racist stuff. We all saw with Jo Koy hostage the Golden Globes, it doesn't really matter how huge of a stand up you are, you can get into hot water real fast with the mainstream media crowd. And Jo Koy's monologue was way more harmless (albeit way less funny) than anything Shane's said and likely will say on SNL.

Plus Shane never even really apologized for all of the offensive stuff he said but at the same time, he's never ever dumped on SNL for firing him, even when his podcast bros try to bait him. For Shane, I think to get to a Bill Burr level, you do need some mainstream media presence. He just postponed a bunch of tour dates from the spring to the fall so I almost wonder if he's got something else in the pipeline.

Unless we get a banworthy performance, I don't care.

It's the same problem as WWE. Once Lorne hit old age, he decided he didn't want anyone becoming bigger than the show. Was Will Ferrell the last huge movie star to come out of SNL? The late '00s-early '10s cast is maybe my all time favorite but I don't think any of them could open up a huge movie. Exception is Bridesmaids but Melissa McCarthy was the one in that movie who ended up breaking out as a movie star instead of Kristen Wiig.

Some fair points brought up.

I feel like they barely make comedies anymore. Seems like budgets are either small or super-sized. You don’t get the $20-$40m movies like we did a decade ago. Kinda seems like where a lot of those SNL cast member movies lived.

Stuntcasting and clapter killed the best thing about SNL for like 15 years, not that it's much better currently but I hear more about cast members than special guests taking spots away.

I finally saw the full Martin Lawrence monologue after years. Show isn't dangerous anymore.

It was bad enough that I wondered if he was trolling the people that are mad that he is hosting.

It wasn’t as good as the Bargatze episode but I thought he did well enough in sketches that I wouldn’t mind him coming back…if he works harder on his monologue.

There was a weird spot in the monologue where he got a big reaction and then acted like no one laughed.

I've seen most of his Down Syndrome jokes in YouTube shorts videos about 1000 times in the last 3 months.

I liked the Jamaican church sketch quite a bit.

Th Forrest Gump high school reunion sketch could have been a classic if it was more fleshed out

I really liked the online gambling pre tape. I was howling at times.

I’m so glad we got dueling Trumps with him and JAJ. I still think JAJ is better. Anthony Atamanuik might still be the best but I think he is more concerned sometimes with taking down Trump than being funny. Which I get but doesn’t really working for mainstream sketch comedy.

Sarah Sherman is quickly replacing Rachel Dratch as my all time weird SNL crush.

He also laughed too much during his monologue. I noticed that with Jo Koy during his terrible Golden Globes monologue as well. It was definitely nervous chuckling from both, but he laughs a lot at his own jokes during his okay standup as well. Don't really get his hype beyond hard to look at guy that says things that ruffles feathers. There's been so many other standups that are that.

A lot of stand ups do that though. Idk if I want to say the majority but it’s a lot. Most notably, Chappelle’s stupid annoying leg slap with his mic.

It does say a lot about where we’re at where we’ve gotten so much divisiveness over a self admitted dumb, dude bro comic. If you’re a decrying him as an example of how conservative fascists have won or championing him as a free speech warrior then you’re a GD idiot.

Nate Bargate is underwhelming, unremarkable and doesn't have much of a jawline but most people liked his episode and like him. Maybe Shane should grow a beard and switch to clean comedy.

It's irked me for years and is one of many reasons I don't watch stand up anymore. A lot of it is that I just prefer other genres to comedy and I've aged out of a lot stuff I used to find funny. The only thing that constantly makes me laugh these days is the We Hate Movies podcast.

Hey what do you know. My comedian friend that said it was the highest rated episode in 30 years had his facts wrong.

My fears of a Mark Normand hosted SNL may have been assuaged for now.

None of the hardcore SNL fans I know bothered to watch. Now with that said the hardcores I know are all women or in the LGBT community and don't like him, but they'll watch anything too.

I wonder if they have any stinging material about Sydney Sweeney's breast size this week.

Relevant people wanting to host is always worth a shot. As soon as Lorne leaves, the quality will increase dramatically.
