Along the lines of locking a disc to one system I saw this elsewhere
Players will not be able to circumvent the system by remaining offline, as the source said users will be forced to be connected to the PSN to boot up their games.

If true go fuck off and die Sony. I'll restrain my rage since it's just a rumor, but christ would that make me go on a murder spree.

Can you imagine the shitstorm that would ensue if they did that, and then the PSN went down for another month or two? Holy balls.

Plus, locking a disc to a single system? So if I buy a game, I can't bring it to a friend's house and play it there for an afternoon? Rented games cease to exist? So the only way to try a new game is to pay $70 dollars? $70 that you can't get a cent back on if it sucks, because you won't be able to sell it? Friggin' absurd.

Its a joke, but PC gaming has shown that constant net connections to play is a tried and tested market. But again thats PC games when 9/10 your pc will be wifi'd as the norm.

As someone who's only played 7 and X, which do you recommend I get? (I know, I know, I'm not as big a FF nerd as most people)

That's two more than I've ever played! I have a few in my "I buy too many games beacuse they are on clearance" collection but I think the ones I have are the ones not very highly regarded (outside of the Kingdom Hearts games if they count).

X is probably still my all-time favorite, though 13-2 is definitely giving it a run for it's money. It's a real testament to it's staying power that X is now over 10 years old, and still has some of the best graphics and sound you can find on the PS2.

The DRM rumors for PS4 are a real downer. What about gamers who live in rural areas that don't have access to high speed internet / PSN? I guess they're just boned on this one?

I have 9, but I've never played it. It's something I've been putting off for no real reason. I remember the abysmal FF9 "Strategy Guide", which was nothing but a $19.99 ad for Playonline.com.

Here is this boss with XXXX HP! For tips on how to win, visit Playonline.com!

The Ultimate Weapon for Character X is in this temple! For tips on where to find it, visit Playonline.com!

Isn't that why I just bought a fucking strategy guide?!

You didn't have to pay any extra for the playonline stuff, but yeah that was amazing. My friend who had the guide gave me the link needed (and there might have been a code too, don't remember), so without having bought the guide I had almost as much info as those that did.

That's good, then, either way. The previous prices were what was keeping me from getting them in the first place. This will be my first experience with this series. :)

We recently received a Sony surround sound system and it has the anynet+ feature with it. After hooking up everything, I try to play the PS3 but either there is no signal or the resolution is too high. Anyone else have had this problem?

Some of that PS4 stuff is accurate, no idea on the locking a game to a single console though.
I think thats a real bad idea, especially given Sony's reputation following all the PS3 hacking stuff. Although it may be that Microsoft will do the same thing with their console so I guess if everyone does then it doesn't reflect so badly on Sony

It does appear that both systems will be "connect to internet to play games" which is completely bullshit, in a world where broadband is widely available, that doesnt always mean it is accessable. My service sometimes disconnects due to exchange problems or other bullshit reasons. Being held prisoner by my provider to play games does not = ratings for me.

Yeah I've mostly switched to PC gaming these days because of 3D, but if I have to be connected to play a fucking console game then that's only going to push me more to PC gaming. Not that PC gaming doesn't do that horseshit too, but not having to be connected ever was a nice advantage of consoles. My internet connection goes out all the time, fuck having to rely on it just to launch a single player game.

Connect to the net to play is defo BS. But as much as I think it is a dumb idea to lock games to consoles.. Its not going to stop me from going for a new console. 99% of my purchases are brand new anyway..

Also, PC isn't any better. Hell PC gaming originated this, in a way, with serial keys.

That being said, I wonder how consoles would accomplish this? Online activation? Games on flash memory instead of optical discs?

There are easier ways to get around it with PC games.. I know in general PC gaming has a lot of advantages over consoles, but one thing I always liked about consoles was that you didn't have to install them and you could take the games out and bring them to a friend's house and vice versa, and you can rent games, all that. I don't usually ever play games outside of my house, where there's almost always an internet connection but that would suck if Comcast had an outage (which is likely to happen from time to time) and I couldn't play games because I had no net connection for the time being. I hate the locking games to one console thing more than always being connected to the net, though. They just killed off a whole industry if they do that. Compare that with PC gaming like Steam where you can take and install your games anywhere provided you log in with the credentials and all that.

Thats a very good point, re: Steam. I actually wouldn't be surprised if they used a model like that. Seem sort of cloud connection that at least let's you install the game on another console if you own two, etc. As far as having to constantly be connected, I will reiterate again how much bullshit I think that is. We are in a digital age, but fuck.. Tat would drive me insane if my router crapped out and I couldn't play a simple one player game.

A bright side of this, at least with Sony, they have a history of supporting their past consoles long after new ones come out. So if history is any indicator, I hope, the PS3 will still have a long shelf life after whatever the fuck this Orbis thing is comes out.

Well i know on the 360 you can recover your gamertag at someone elses console and play your stuff via that.

PS3 you can log into your account on and redownload on up to 3 consoles.

Just found out why PS one games aren't currently compatible with the PS Vita. Will post why if you pinky swear not to repeat it anywhere else because it could get traced back to my source and he is a cool guy.

Let me put it this way. There's no technical limitation to putting PS One games on the Vita, and they would have done it by now if they could have.

Ah, screw it. I know it sounds weird, but the reason I have been given is that the FCC wants to get paid. Sony is trying to figure out a way to do it without giving them any money.

Interesting. I kinda had the vibe that PS2 games wouldn't be on there due to the trend of remakes. But I hadn't even thought about the FCC when it came to PSOne games, and I knew they definitely weren't doing remakes of those. Interesting. Hope they figure it out soon because I have a ton of them that I want on my Vita - stat! :)

That explains a lot. I was wondering why I couldn't kick my PSN copy of Final Fantasy VII to my Vita.

I did hear some other tidbits about the PS4. However, there are few details because the details don't exist. Everything that has been leaked about the performance specs of the system are true. The whole locked disc to system used game thing? That's not 100%. It's on the table, but I couldn't figure out if it is going to happen or not. As a matter of fact, he didn't know either, and couldn't give me an estimate.

Release date and price? Sony has no idea yet. The guy works for the PSN, and helps content management, etc. He also gets to choose some of the free titles for Playstation Plus; he is personally responsible for free Battle Fantasia. His name is also in the credits for Infamous and Resistance 3.

As far as PS one games on Vita, they would have done it by now if it weren't for the potential fines they would face. There's also an explanation for why some games can be copied from a PS3 to a Vita, but not direct downloaded: The games were not fully done being tested for compatibility, but they worked "well enough", so they left that in as an option for more savvy users to be able to copy the games over. Every game has to be tested for Vita compatibility. (Possibly not PS one games, as you could conceivably just emulate the crap out of them like the PS3 does)
