They better fix the green lightsaber issue in A New Hope.

How that got through to print ill never know.

The demand for the untouched OT on dvd in a proper anamorphic widescreen aspect and the fact it gets permanatly ignored shows how much lucas doesnt give a shit about anything but lining his own pocket.

Maybe they'll do an idea I remember hearing was planned and, during the scene where Luke is getting electrocuted by Palpatine and Vader is looking between the two in an introspective moment, they'll insert flashbacks to his time with Padme.

That would be...wow.

(Luke getting fried to death) (flashback) "I HATE SAND"

That's one bit which I thought was actually improved in retrospect by the prequels. All of the Emperor's "you will join me, it is your destiny" talk in RotJ always rang hollow for me. Luke is basically a goody-two-shoes superhero, a prototypical White Hat. He shows absolutely no signs of being receptive to the dark side; his only weakness is his immaturity, and you can see him growing out of that over the course of the trilogy. So why the fuck would Palpatine seriously believe that he could turn Luke evil? When you add in the backstory of "because he DID turn Luke's dad evil, by basically doing the exact same shit" it feels more credible. And he sealed his own doom by inadvertently making Anakin relive the moment where he saved Palpatine from Windu, which was his own personal point of no return.

There's gotta be more to it than just that, thought. As you noted, Lucas is more than willing to trick out his old whores in a variety of new outfits in order to make another buck. Wouldn't rereleasing the original edition of the OT sell approximately seventeen trillion copies? The only possible explanation is that he really does think the special editions are the perfect version, and insists on proving himself right by never letting the "bad" versions see the light of day.

That's pretty much it. I got the box set a bunch of years ago that had the original versions as extras, and that's looking like the only official version of the originals that will ever be released on DVD.

Back in 97 when he originally did the special editions he stated it was indeed the way he intended the films to be, hell it was also apparntly his reasoning for leaving it open for the prequals in the future (as he new effects would be better in the future).

So from his POV the CGI OT is the definitive edition of how he wants his saga. Fair enough, but the majority of the fanbase loved the OT for its anamatronics etc.

3 things always have annoyed me since the 2004 dvd releases.

1) Boba Fetts voice, yes i know it makes sence since Boba suddenly became a clone Jango, but they ruined the mystique of the character imo.

2) That really ugly looking EP3 emperor replacing the original woman with chimp eyes version. EP3 emperor looked nothing like EP6 emperor due to the 30yrs of difference, so it just didnt make sence to have the young looking version basicly ruining the reveal that Luke was Vaders son.

3) Hayden replacing Sebastian Shaw. The theory is that Anakin died as hayden and became Vader thus Hayden is the good force ghost. Fair enough, except that Vader ended up completing the prophecy and returned to the light at the end of Jedi.

I double dipped for the unaltered trilogy when it was released, and was PISSED that it was in 4:3 boxed widescreen. My dvd player/TV doesnt have the option to strecth when im viewing via HDMI so i either A) get black bars around a tiny picture or B) have a stupidly stretched picture ruining the aspect.

Its nitpicking i know, but I refuse to belive Lucas didnt bother to save his precious money maker when he did the digital cleanup back in 97. He has to have a hard copy for him to add/remove CGI in all the releases.

A supposed-to-be-blue lightsaber with a green hue.

Vader's lightsaber also appeared to be pink in a lot of shots through out the SE films (most notably in TESB).

That's one of two things that have bugged me about that release. Luke's lightsaber effects on the Falcon were never cleaned up, and there are a few pieces of dialog that sound weird- on hte Death Star, after Han races down the corridor after the Storm Trooprs and Luke says a line to Leia, there is a weird audio quality to it, and I swear you can hear someone spitting.

No argument that there's all kinds of little fuckups here and there. My favorites are when Darth Vader is moving and gesturing as if he's talking, but there's no dialogue. But there is a massive motherfucking difference between "turning a green lightsaber blue" and "let's throw in a bunch of jarring CGI which clearly doesn't match the original footage". That's the part I never understood: Lucas is an infamous techno-sage, consistently on the cutting edge of the very best special effects. How did he never realize that many of the new fx looked like cold shit run over twice? Stuff like the giant lizards on Tattooine, or the stupid new mouth on the Sarlac, it doesn't even come close to blending in with the existing material.

I really would not be shocked if he went back and redid the whole god damn triology someday soon before he died and pretend the original didn't happen. Maybe if SW fanboy extremes would stop BUYING EVERY EDITION HE RELEASES, he would finally give them what they want. But nah, a 30 second scene is a good reason to give up seeing the originals as they were.

I gave up a decade ago. I enjoy the Clone Wars but in terms of buying and spending money on SW stuff, I'm finished.

I'm with 2Gold. I have the unaltered OT on dvd and that is good enough for me. Sure the quality isn't the best - but if that's all he's going to give us - then I'll take what I can get. I have the VHS tapes but not VHS player plus I'm sure they've aged. I enjoy talking about the SW mythos and continue to do so and I love both of The Clone Wars cartoons but I'll probably end up never buying anything SW related again including the upcoming Blu-Rays. Personally, I think Lucas is just pissed off that the hardcore SW fans gave a lukewarm response to his SE in 1997 and since then - he's made them suffer for it. As Matt said on the last page - it really is hard being a Star Wars fan.

EDIT - (I didn't know how to fit this in so I'm just adding it) Just watch Mr. Plinkett's review of The Phantom Menace when Lucas and company are watching a rough cut of TPM and you can see the disdain and regret on many people's faces as you can tell that they should've challenged Lucas more on his decisions (Jar Jar, midichlorians, etc).

During that scene, the lightsaber, while supposed to be blue, was actually white.

Back when ROTJ was coming out, talk in the schoolyard was mainly about how Leia was going to be "half-naked" in it.

Also, I had to make sure my Speeder Bike t-shirt was available to wear when my parents took me to see it. I'm pretty sure it was the same shirt as in the below pic (this dude isn't me, it was the only pic I was able to Google up for "speeder bike shirt"):

From the "Urgh, just leave the films the FUCK ALONE GEORGE!" files:

The entire Star Wars film saga is to be converted into 3D, director George Lucas has announced.

A statement on the Star Wars website said: "The cutting edge conversion will take that immersion to the next thrilling level."

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace is expected to be released in 2012, with the other films to follow.

Last month, it was announced that 3D films had helped boost UK box office takings by 8%.

It had been reported that Lucas had delayed converting the Star Wars movies into 3D until there were enough screens available to screen them.

Following the success of James Cameron's Avatar, which broke several box office records, 3D movies have become more common.

This year, Alice In Wonderland, Toy Story 3 and Shrek Forever After were all released in 3D and proved to be a big hit at cinemas.

But reactions to the news about Star Wars have been mixed.

"Watching TPM (The Phantom Menace) in 3D would be like the car actually crashing into your face as opposed to just unfolding before your eyes," British Star Trek actor and science fiction fan Simon Pegg said on micro-blogging site Twitter.

Another user dubbed GeorgeMcCallum added: "Do you not think that Star Wars in 3D may ruin the context of the film, messing around with a movie which is already so popular?"
George Lucas Lucas directed the first Star Wars film in 1977 and also its three prequels

Industrial Light & Magic, the part of Lucas's production company Lucasfilm that specialises in visual effects, will supervise the project.

ILM's John Knoll said: "Getting good results on a stereo conversion is a matter of taking the time and getting it right.

"It takes a critical and artistic eye along with an incredible attention to detail to be successful. It is not something that you can rush if you want to expect good results.

"For Star Wars we will take our time, applying everything we know both aesthetically and technically to bring audiences a fantastic new Star Wars experience."

In April, DreamWorks announced the first three Shrek movies would be converted to 3D.

It has also been reported that Warner Bros has plans to rerelease the Harry Potter films in the newly revived format.

Doesn't retroactively turning a movie into 3D as opposed to filimg in 3D always look like shit?

I admit they'd get my money to see A New Hope in 3D just to see how it comes out, but why in the holy fuck is he starting with the prequel trilogy? Jar Jar Binks in 3D....(kills self)

Probably, but seeing as Lucas can't leave well enough alone I'm sure he'll put up money to redo some FX specifically in 3D.

Why is everyone so surprised? I've heard that he was thinking about doing this since Episode 3 came out.

I'm still waiting for Episode 7 where Anakin Skywalker wakes up and realizes that Episodes 3 through 6 were just a Force induced premonition showing what would happen IF he turned to the Dark Side.
