Well, as if it weren't trending that way already, Hollywood isn't gonna make mega blockbusters anymore given the underperformance of the new Mission: Impossible. Which still might have legs (it's a good movie; I can see word of mouth helping it!) and not be a The Flash-level tanking, but really, no studio should be spending nearly $300 million on a single film.

A mix of that and it on surface level might not be seen as super political. When "200 Mules" came out, not as many people saw that since anyone who knows the election wasn't stolen isn't going to see that. The content of it is front and center. On surface level, "Sound of Freedom" is about a man whose fighting human trafficking. Granted, it's not just that (and the guy it's about may have lied about a lot of it), but as I said, on surface level it doesn't seem overtly political (even though Jim Caviezel isn't shy about the fact he believes in Qanon and he and others involved in it called trans people diddlers.) It's also apparently better made than most faith based movies, and even more secular critics will tell you that they can understand why it has appeal.

Exactly. I ended up seeing it without this knowledge of Caviezel going on Bannon, etc to help promote it but if you take a step back on it and take all of his bullshit out of it....it's not the alt-right thing that people are assuming it is (and most of those people are in the right wing fringe zone who spin it as such to generate controversy ticket sales on the basis of "the movie Hollywood doesn't want you to see" nonsense). It's just another Taken-like action flick with a dude starring in it that's kind of gone in his own direction with how he feels it should be promoted. By all indications, the studio really never wanted him in the role but the dude that Jim played pushed for it. And that guy's story has been the subject of much speculation and controversy itself in that a major level of stuff in this film was in fact not true and his whole organization has had alot of red flags come up in the past.

This was made back in 2018 and had no political bias attached to it in the outset. Disney even was behind it for awhile and it just got lost in the shuffle when the 20th Century FOX deal happened. From that point, multiple studios turned it down because of the subject matter, which is an issue....like who wants to be the studio to be proud of making money off this subject? All of the political tribalism since covid too hasn't done it any favors either.

The one thing I am not fully aware on the details on is what exactly was the "stay after fhe film for a special message from so and so" stuff as I've heard that is where the spin starts on some level with the ill maligned bullshit. I left as soon as the credits rolled as I wasn't gonna lean into any of that propaganda for sure.

That's funny to me because Taken happens to be one of The Handful™ and, from my point of view, "MAGA Taken" could also have just been Taken. Like, how much more MAGA did conservatives want the Taken franchise to be?

counterpoint: none of those movies have an amazing Liam Neeson speech

Final numbers had MI taking in $78.49 Million instead. Indiana Jones is sitting at $145.68 Million domestically while Spider-Man is a robust $368.80 Million. The Little Mermaid continues to claw closer to $295 Million at $293.96 Million while Ruby Gillman is a spectacular flop at just $14.48 Million.

Both Barbie especially and Oppenheimer are doing very, very well on opening weekend. Barbie's looking at roughly a $100 Mill budget, Oppenheimer at $180 Mill budget but more importantly Barbie's already looking at $337 Million worldwide and Oppenheimer's already at around $174 Million worldwide.

glad both of those movies did well tbh because they're different from the usual stuff. Barbie sounds like its a lot more subversive than you'd expect from that type of movie and might actually be decent.

I had a feeling we might be in good hands when the first trailer spoofed "2001: A Space Odyssey"

So saw Oppenheimer over the weekend in a 70mm screen (the best way to see if if you have this option near you, even better if its IMAX 70mm but there's just a few handful of those screens nationwide) and goddamn, I've NEVER seen the one particular theater I was at so crowded with so much fandom around a certain movie, this was for particularly Barbie. It was even more of a turnout than any Marvel movie etc that I've experienced opening weekend in terms of large groups going together, dressing up, etc. No shock it did a huge number over the weekend. I've never seen so much pink clothing in one single place at one single time.

Oppenheimer was also sold out multiple times during the day and I do think there was a significant amount of movie fans who attended both back to back. Would be interesting to see any data on that part. I know AMC made some statement a few weeks ago that I think 20k of the AMC stubs members have booked both movies on the same day according to their app info.

I went to discount movie Tuesday at my local theater and it was the busiest I had ever seen it since the first Avatar came out. It was so busy the screening of the month old Indiana Jones movie I went to was packed (presumably cause the movies people wanted to see were sold out)

That's not a significant drop for "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer", so good for them. "Talk to Me" actually exceeded expectations (it was expected to make 5 or 4 million), and is the biggest opening for an A24 movie since "Hereditary"

"Haunted Mansion" ended up making less than projected, and is the fourth or fifth box office bomb Disney has had this year (others included "Indiana Jones", Ant-Man and the Wasp" and "Elemental.") Outside of "Guardians 3" and "The Little Mermaid", all their movies this year have bombed or underperformed.

Glad to see Talk To Me do so strongly. I know it's been getting buzz/great word of mouth amongst horror movie fans (that's largely why I saw it in theaters), which has surely helped and it's good counter-programming to films like Barbie, Oppenheimer, and Haunted Mansion.

All of that really makes the decision to release god damn Haunted Mansion in fucking July all the more idiotic.
Agreed. This very clearly should have been an October release. I think elevated and unique horror like Talk to Me is ideal somewhat for this time of the year, but if it's themed horror that plays more towards the Halloween season, it needs to go in the fall.

Sans with a great horror that was just recently released called Cobwebs that, for some reason was dropped with little to no fanfare randomly....even though the film's setting was all in and around the Halloween season.
