Finally going to see Barbie tonight and I know it’s discount Tuesday (and weather stinks so it’s good movie going weather) but still pretty impressive a two and a half week old movie can sell out at 5:30 PM on a weekday.

Barbie has topped $478 Million domestically in just 19 days and is still doing $2,000+ per theater, which is absurd. Oppenheimer has topped $238 Million domestically while Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 is the unfortunate casualty just barely surpassing $153 Million after running into the buzzsaw of the first 2 movies (and more importantly, losing those key IMAX screenings which contribute a large chunk of change).

Elemental was regarded as a bust on opening weekend and has somewhat underperformed domestically ($149 Million on a $200 budget) but has made $423 Million worldwide and has sustained itself in theaters over 54 days. A reminder that opening weekend isn't a be-all/end-all for the potential success of these movies if it can find an audience in the ensuing weeks. It's done almost as well as Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, which had an opening weekend that was double that of Elemental - $61 Million vs. $29 Million.

Ouch for "Last Voyage of the Demeter". Next week's a return to capeshit with "Blue Beetle", which I'm sure will overthrow "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" for the top spot but I can't see it being a hit.

"Haunted Mansion"-I know Disney is a brand and not a studio and they think anything they make will get a lot of cash, but was anybody really asking for another "Haunted Mansion" movie?

I get the whole "summer blockbuster" aspect but I find it baffling that Disney threw Haunted Mansion to the wolves in the summer rather than scheduling it for late September/early October as counter-programming especially for kids and Halloween time.

Late September does have A Haunting in Venice, Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie, and Saw X but I think HM could have held its own in that grouping. The October competition is Kraven: The Hunter, The Exorcist: Believer, KIllers of the Flower Moon (which kids aren't fucking seeing), and Five Nights at Freddy's (probably the most legitimate competition for the kids market).

Back in 1993 Disney pulled the same stunt with Hocus Pocus (released in July of 1993) but that almost doubled its budget in theaters and became a bonafide Halloween staple once it hit VHS. Worth noting that HP was actually increasing its box office $$ in late September/early October week to week too.

Blue Beetle’s marketing is still kind of wonky. It does really have the vibe of the made for streaming movie that got bumped to fill the late summer movie theater dead zone that it is. I could see it slipping into the top two but I wouldn’t be shocked if Barbie was #1 for the 5th week in a row.

And when was the last time a movie was #1 for five weeks in a row? Four weeks in a row seems damn impressive in this day and age.

I was gonna say it had to have been Avatar or its sequel. I know Titanic had an insane 3 month stretch where it was #1 at the box office. It makes sense since they were all Christmas time movies so they could ride out the January-February dead zones.

Fake edit- I looked it up and Avatar: The Way of Water was #1 for 7 weeks in a row (last three weeks of 2022 and first four weeks of 2023). Spider-Man: No Way Home was #1 for six weeks in a row and both Black Panther movies were #1 for five weeks in a row.

Tenet and inexplicably The Croods: A New Age were two other recent movies that were #1 for five weeks in a row but they should have asterisk since they were released mid pandemic and they had diddly squat for competition.

Oh undoubtedly. Titanic was the last one to get to a double digit streak and that was 25+ years ago. Even a lot of smash hits are available for streaming within ten weeks of being released.

I'm genuinely amazed that Top Gun: Maverick was only #1 for three weekends. I think that was in theaters here for at least six months. What's impressive is first two weekends were its first two weeks but third week it was #1 was fifteen weeks into it being in theaters.

Since theaters fully reopened in 2021, has there been a movie that’s been #1 at the box office while available for home streaming? I think Barbie has a chance to do it.

If Blue Beetle and Strays don’t do it this weekend, next challenger is probably The Equalizer 3 (There are three Denzel Washington Equalizer movies already?) on Labor Day Weekend right before it hits streaming. No disrespect to the movie with Nicolas Cate as a Hitman turned beach bum shooting his old co workers in the Cayman Islands.

Probably not unless there was a fluke day & date release that blew up, which I highly doubt happened.

Unless movie studios decide to push the theaters to streaming day window (which I highly, highly doubt) , I think it could happen eventually even if Barbie isn't able to do it IMO. It'll just have to be the right movie (with a lot of rewatch ability) at the right time of year against the right (weak) field of competition.

If Warner knew how much of a cultural sensation Barbie was going to be, I bet that they would have pushed Blue Beetle back a few weeks just for the feat and to have the ads hyping "The #1 movie in the country is now available for home streaming!"

Pretty sure they all do that now... doesn't matter if the movie is still in theaters or not tbh. #1 Movie is #1 Movie. "The #1 movie of the summer/winter" / "2023's #1 movie via Rotten Tomatoes/Critics" / "The #1 hit movie of the year" etc.

yeah but having it be the actual current #1 movie at the box office would be a nice point after touchdown.
Not really... day & date streaming arguably killed the box office capabilities of movies like Black Widow ($183.65 Million Domestic) and Wonder Woman 1984 (released to streaming 1 month after its theatrical release, only made $46.8 Million Domestic. Caveat obviously being XMas of Pandemic but its clear the streaming news did not help).

You may get more eyeballs on the movie on streaming but at the box office, people are paying a minimum $9.99 or whatever per ticket, and your Univerals/Warner Bros/etc. get a larger piece of that pie despite the Hollywood Accounting tricks.

Yeah, it's a nice feather in the cap for marketing I guess but consumers wouldn't care really and it feels like it'd be throwing away $$ from a studio perspective if those same streaming eyes aren't paying $10+ to see it in the theaters instead.

WW84 was also one of the poorly received recent superhero movies. The fact that it wasn’t very good hurt it almost as much as the pandemic.

True. I still think the pandemic + the 1 month release "window" didn't help as it was only in 2,000+ theaters but I remember specifically waiting for that to hit Disney+ because it was only a month wait.

It's worth noting WW84 averaged a robust for that time $7,765 per theater in just over 2,000 theaters for 12/25/20. Theaters were just coming out of the pandemic but were struggling to make $500 per theater on most of the movies they were releasing so WW84 could've been a much bigger hit if the studio had kept it as a theater only run. Its biggest competition really wasn't until 2/26/21 with Tom & Jerry (which IIRC also had a quick theater run into streaming?) and then Raya and the Last Dragon in March.

Ouch for "Blue Beetle", I couldn't be happier that "Strays" bombed (I cringed every time I saw a trailer for it in theaters), and good for "Talk to Me" being a hit (there's going to be a sequel BTW). I especially love seeing the re-release of "Oldboy" doing great in one theater, and it's supposed to get a wider release soon.

I know he's in Barbie in a supporting role, but Will Ferrell hasn't been a draw by himself in a very long time. Strays looked like a streaming movie and probably would've done better on streaming.

Weirdly, one of my takeaways from Barbie was "Hey. Will Ferrell is actually still funny."

I guess he should do more good supporting roles where he doesn't need to wear out his welcome and less leading dumb, outdated raunchy comedies.

Glad to see TMNT still doing fairly strong considering the movies around it. Throw in the toys/licensing after the fact and the movie will definitely have been worth it regardless of its box office success (I've read that's why so many Transformers, etc. movies are/were made, were the toy sales and that marketing bonanza).

Strays just reminded me of stuff like Bad Teacher, Good Boys, and Sausage Party. Not my cup of tea but could've done decently with lesser box office competition (the latter 3 all did around $85-$100 Million domestically).

It’s late August. Only other time of year with weaker box office is the January dumping ground. Most of the competitive movies are ones that have already been out for 3 to 6 weeks.

In fact, I’m pretty sure Strays was initially scheduled for May or June but got pushed back so it could open up against less competition.

Blue Beetle just seemed like a victim of bad timing. No one but no one really wants to see a DCU movie one, especially for a tertiary character and the “This is DC’s Black Panther” hype felt forced and performative.

"Retribution" is the new Liam Neeson movie, and I had no it was out this week, or that it existed. "Bottoms" did good for a that's only playing in 10 theaters, as it got mostly good to great reviews. I don't know how well it will do if/when it gets a wide release though.

Pleasantly surprised at TMNT's staying power and the fact it will be breaking $100 Million domestically soon. Has to be disappointing that Gran Turismo pushed back its release date and still made less per theater than Barbie did in its 6th week.

I'd be curious to see what the box office is for National Cinema Day today. I read somewhere that ticket sales are 7x higher for today than they were yesterday.
