Yeah, the word of mouth on Trap wasn't good (this coming from somebody who did like Old to be fair) with some accusing it of almost bait & switch tactics so that's largely why I skipped it. It wouldn't surprise me if D&W surpasses $100 Million again in finals.

I've heard It Ends With Us could really surprise given its subject matter and specific audience appeal.

Excellent holds from everything. It's going to be interesting what happens with Twisters. The movie is doing incredible business here, but has only made around 72 million worldwide. It might not be able to cover the 155 million budget because of the disastrous overseas performance. A sequel is guaranteed though because of how big it is here. But, I wonder if they try to throw in a bigger star with worldwide appeal while keeping Powell and Jones around. I'd watch old ass Denzel go after a Twister.

Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively-our new box office overlords. At least Jenny Slate is in a hit movie. Also

Proving less successful at that is “Borderlands,” Lionsgate’s long-gestating adaptation of Take-Two’s shoot-em-and-loot-em video game series. The feature took in a meager $4 million from 3,125 locations, even with increased ticket sales from play in Imax and other premium large-format auditoriums. The sci-fi comedy is in serious danger of opening below $10 million — a terrible result considering its production budget of $115 million. It could be even be below director Eli Roth’s last feature, the modestly budgeted slasher “Thanksgiving,” which got to eight-digits in its debut last fall
The writing has been on the wall for a while now with “Borderlands.” Now opening more than three and a half years after principal photography kicked off, the would-be franchise-starter has earned the worst critical response of any wide release this summer. Even franchise fans that prioritized seeing the feature as soon as possible are calling it a turkey (a terrible D+ grade on Cinema Score).

Never ever underestimate the power of middle aged white women who want to see another middle aged white woman in an abusive relationship.

If they can find a way to put Wonder Woman in an abusive marriage, the box office returns will shatter anything James Cameron could conceive.

The fact that channels like Lifetime made a literal decade+ of content just around that concept made me think the movie would surprise some people. I still remember that J-Lo movie, Enough doing better than people expected back then (finished 67th in 2002 ahead of movies like The Clockstoppers, Analyze That, Queen of the Damned).

"Longlegs" is the first smaller movie of the year to make $100 million worldwide. Love to see it.

Next week is the remake of "The Crow" and "Blink Twice", next week is "Regan" and "AfrAId" (aka why would you call your movie that). "Blink Twice" looks good, but otherwise it looks like we're reaching the dump month portions of August and September.

Worth highlighting the solid 4 day run for Coraline, which was a Fathom Event 3D re-release I believe, as it did $11.306 Million. That has pushed it to over $86 Million domestically.

Damn, Cuckoo got ate up by Longlegs. Maxxine did as well.
One of the reasons "Longlegs" did so well is that Neon did an incredible job marketing it while also not revealing what the whole thing is about. Also, I love seeing Nic Cage in a hit movie again. The man deserves it.

"The Crow"-Goddamn this has to be the biggest bomb of the year. Wish "Strange Darling" had gotten a wider release, as I've heard it's really good.

Next week is "Reagan" (which has new cover songs by Bob Dylan and Gene Simmons-if only Kamala still posted) and that AI themed horror movie. September 6th is "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" and "The Front Room" (new A24 horror movie). Interestingly enough, two Anime movies playing on September 11th in "The Concierge at Hokkyoku Department Store" and a one night only anniversary screening of "Ninja Scroll" (Love that movie, but I can't help but wonder how younger Anime fans who haven't seen it will react. There's some stuff in there you probably couldnt' get away with today.)

I think the only saving grace for The Crow is that its budget is listed at $50 Million whereas Borderlands I've seen anywhere from $100 to $120 Million so financially the latter has to be a much bigger flop despite opening at almost double The Crow.

Next week also has 1992, starring Tyrese Gibson & Ray Liotta, which I think could be a decent hit if it gets decent scores/buzz upon release. You Gotta Believe with Luke Wilson & Greg Kinnear seems like the type that could do well in the South as it's a "true story" sports movie about Texas' LLWS run from 2002.

Twisters is gonna be an interesting case of whether the studio will count it as a box office success. It's sitting at just under 2.5 Worldwide but is very heavily running on its domestic gross and should end around $275-$280 Million domestically.

Despicable Me 4 also topped $900 Million globally and deserves more acclaim for its success but Inside Out 2 was such a juggernaut (now over $1 Billion internationally alone!) that it kind of got lost in that news.

That is...a lot for the new "Beetlejuice". I thought of seeing "The Front Room", but changed my mind as I've been a bit busy this weekend.

Next week is "

-Speak no Evil" (I keep seeing people complain about the trailer and seeing it a bunch, but I've only seen it twice)
-"The Killer's Game" (Dave Bautista! Ben Kingsley! Pom Klementief! Scott Adkins! Drew Mcintyre! Terry Crews! Looks like dumb fun, like an enjoyable DTV or direct to streaming movie escaped to a wide release)
-"Am I Racist" (new documentary from Matt Walsh and please kill me)

Good for SNE. I think The Killer's Game looked fun but it didn't have a lot of marketing push behind it (which is a shame) so I'm not surprised it didn't do that well.

"Beetlejuice" is still dominating, while "Never Let Go" and "The Substance" did about what people expected (the latter is the first wide release for Mubi)

Next week we're getting "The Wild Robot", "Azrael" (new IFC/Shudder release) and "Megalopolis" (which isn't looking good as far as Box Office is concerned, though I doubt Coppola cares all that much)

Transformers was tracking for like 40 or 50 million and got great reviews from both critics and audiences, so unless this has Puss N Boots or Elemental type of legs, it's a disappointment.

It does seem like 80's nostalgia is dead at the box office at this point. Last couple of years, audiences didn't show up for Mad Max, Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters, Michael Keaton returning as Batman, and probably more I'm forgetting. I realize Beetlejuice came out in 88, but because of the Cartoon and merchandise, I think of Beetlejuice as more of the 90's. It was a fixture on cable in the 90's. 90's and especially 00's nostalgia is ruling right now.

I think people are a bit burned out on Transformers stuff in general and the 1st trailer didn't help IMO (it showed it as a goofy, upbeat comedy aimed at kids whereas the final trailer I saw a few weeks ago actually delved into the fact there'd be factions & battles).

I've said it before, but "Fury Road" was a very modest hit, and the "Mad Max" films are all well remembered but I don't know if they were huge hits from the get-go. "Transformers" has been slowly underperforming since "The Last Night"

lol the new Dinesh D'Souza movie didn't even make a million. Neither are hits, but Aubrey Plaza is in two movies that are in the top 10. Good to see "The Substance" still hanging in there (highly recommend it)

Next week is "Joker 2", "Monster Summer", "White Bird" and an animated movie called "Scarygirl",

Glad to see Wild Robot do strong. It had a lot of great word of mouth and seemed to appeal to multiple demographics.

Joker 2 made $20 Million on Friday (which I think includes the $7 Million in previews from Thursday?) putting it on track for between $40-$50 Million for the weekend. The Wild Robot did a hair under $5 Million which puts it at a solid 2nd Weekend with it possibly getting to its $78 Million production budget worldwide already.

Transformers One had a very low budget ($75 Million) which will help its cause but it has to be somewhat of a disappointment box office wise given the marketing push behind it.

The Speak No Evil remake is going to be an under the radar box office hit. $15 Million budget and already $60 Million worldwide. Almost made its entire budget in the 1st weekend. Universal continuing to have successful hits this year.

I could see Joker 2 coming in 3 to 5 million below the estimates. This country has totally rejected it. It's doing okay in Europe though.
