I think If is the second highest opening for an original film post pandemic. With it passing Free Guy also with Ryan Reynolds. I'm beyond tired of Ryan Reynolds, but he is a legitimate draw in a time where there aren't many left.
Decent opening although it having a $110 Million budget will make it difficult to see success given the coming weekends and competition. Free Guy opened at $28 Million and ended up making just over $121 Million domestically. While the $35 Million looks solid enough, it has to be somewhat disappointing considering the lack of kids competition in theaters and Kung Fu Panda 4 opened $20+ Million higher just a few months ago.

TMNT: Mutant Mayhem opened at $28 Million last year and made $118 domestically. Trolls Band Together opened at $30 Million and made just under $103 Million. Haunted Mansion opened at $24 Million and finished with just $67 Million domestically.

I don't see it doing as bad as a Haunted Mansion but I think it could legitimately struggle to get to $110 Million domestically. If it has a normal hold and drops say 55% next weekend, that'd give it $54.25 Million and a 50% drop after that would have it around $63.8 Million (slightly higher if you throw in weekly numbers).

Looks like both Furiosa and The Garfield Movie are expected to do around $30-$35 Million this weekend. Decent numbers but I thought Furiosa could challenge that $50 Million mark coming into the year so to me, that has to be a little disappointing. Ticket prices and run times still aren't helping matters (Furiosa is 2 & 1/2 Hours). Throw in the trailers/AMC ads for 10-20 minutes and that's almost 3 Hours of sitting.

At my theater, The Garfield Movie has 7 Screenings today, 7 Screenings tomorrow, and 4 Screenings on Memorial Day and that's an Hour, 40 Minute movie. For comparison, Furiosa has 8 Screenings, 8 Screenings, and 6 Screenings on Memorial Day. I don't know if run times impact the number of screenings per theater but I feel like Furiosa could've squeezed in another screening if it was even just a half hour shorter.

Damn, did worse than projected. I loved "Furiosa", but I can see why it isn't a hit-"Fury Road" was a hit, but more of a word of mouth/decent sized one than a huge one.

Next week is smaller, with Summer Camp (whose existence I learned about yesterday, as it's the only new movie my theater will be getting), and Anime (and probably In a Violent Nature) being the only big to decent sized releases. June 7th is "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" and June 14th is "Inside Out 2".

If neither, especially the latter, challenges the $100 Million mark than the box office could be in trouble. We'd have to wait til July 4th weekend with Despicable Me 4 dropping to see if that'd approach that benchmark.

Furiosa had a mediocre first trailer imo, and I've read a lot of people saying that the underwhelming trailer, and the more cgi'd look of this compared to Fury Road made them hesitant to see it in theaters. I haven't seen it yet, but this crashed so badly. It was tracking for 36-40 million, and the estimates kept shrinking all the way down to 25 million and barely beat Garfield. It looks like this might be the last Mad Max movie George Miller makes unless they greenlight another and I think this bombing is going to scare them. Then again, I thought after The Matrix Ressurections tanked that we wouldn't see anymore Matrix movies and yet there's a 5th coming.

I'd be surprised if Inside Out 2 misses 100 million, but who knows anymore. I know the love for that first movie has grown over the last 9 years. And it seems more of a easy hit than something weird and lacking mainstream appeal like Furiosa.

Also, Garfield didn't do too great either. But, it had like a 68 million dollar budget which is modest for a blockbuster movie these days

I hate repeating myself, but I do feel like emphasizing that "Fury Road" was a modest hit that largely got on by word of mouth. I mention this because

1.) Word of mouth hits are a rarity, and are especially rare for big budget movies. The reality is that sort of thing almost always happens for low budget movies like "Late Night With the Devil" or "Terrifier 2", and if not that then the occasional art house/specialty movie.

2.) I feel like we're at a point where budgets have gotten so high that studios can't even have a moderate hit.

It's worth noting that Mad Max: Fury Road barely made $150+ Million domestically (its budget was $150 Million) and a shade under $370 Million globally. It had a lot of great word of mouth but it also was going up against stiffer competition (Jurassic World & Inside Out notably) so it doing as well as it did should actually be a feather in its cap. Just for comparison's sake, San Andreas did $155 Million domestically and over $456 Million worldwide while being released just 2 weeks later on a slightly lower budget of $110 Million.

"The fifth entry in director George Miller’s post-apocalyptic series, starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, is stalling at the international box office with $33.3 million from 75 territories, bringing its worldwide tally to $58.9 million. It’s a tough start given the film cost $168 million to produce, not including a splashy global press tour with a stop at Cannes Film Festival."

2.) I feel like we're at a point where budgets have gotten so high that studios can't even have a moderate hit.

Absolutely. It's also to a point where it's almost like studios refuse to budget in moderation unless it's a niche horror movie. See Tarot with its $8 Million budget and it has 4.6X to $37+ Million worldwide, even if it isn't a good movie.

- Bad Boys: Ride or Die will probably be between $90-$130 Million (Bad Boys for Life was $90 Million and finished 4.7X while Bad Boys II was $130 Million and finished 2.1X but if you gave BBII that $90 Million budget, suddenly it's up to 3X).
- The Fall Guy was $125 Million with a lot of marketing.
- IF was $110 Million with a lot of marketing too.
- Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was $160 Million.
- Even something like Challengers, with a modest $55 Million is struggling and sitting at $81 Million worldwide. A movie of that type, did it really need that big a budget?

-Bad Boys: Ride or Die

-The Watchers (the directorial debut of M. Night's daughter)

-Fathom events showings (Lord of the Rings and Studio Ghibli in particular-the latter now being a summer tradition. Also, this week's was the 45th anniversary for The Muppet Movie)

-Inside Out 2

-A Quiet Place: Day One

-The Bike Riders

-Horizon: An American Saga pt 1

-The Exorcism (a Russell Crow movie that was shot two years ago and is getting dumped into theaters)

-And some smaller titles (Tuesday, an A24 release that has a rare dramatic role for Julia Louise Dreyfuss and Kinds of Kindness for example)

lol, I literally thought you meant they were re-releasing The Pope's Exorcist from last year until I saw he actually had that title coming out under his IMDB.

The new "Bad Boys" (which is fun when Martin Lawrence isn't mugging for the camera) is also the best opening for an R rated movie since "Openheimer", and I have a feeling it will keep doing numbers throughout the month. I think "Tuesday" gets a wider release next week.

Will Smith slapping the life back into the box office. Honestly, as a 90's kid and Fresh Prince fan, it's cool to see that he still can open a movie that big. Slap did jack all to his popularity. And, Bad Boys 5 if good will probably do great numbers as well. If my man Martin can hold on. Where's Tommy or Pam or Cole to fill in?

Looks like Inside Out 2 is finally gonna be the first real "summer" blockbuster. It made $62 Million on Friday alone and looks like it should challenge $100+ Million fairly easily. A lot of rumblings it could get to around $130 Million by the end of the weekend.

Holy shit, nearly 300 million opening weekend worldwide. 155 domestic and 140 international and there's still some big markets it needs to open in. That's insane. It's so nice to see huge numbers again after how barren post Barbieheimer was for huge blockbusters. This is easily going to go over 1 billion worldwide.

I'm not an animation guy aside from like prime Simpsons and prime South Park, but the first Inside Out was a great kids movie, and one of the last Pixar movies i've seen. Last Pixar movie I saw was Toy Story 4 which was a letdown.

Everything I've heard is that Inside Out 2 is equally good (for the most part). This definitely has to be a feather in the cap for Iger/Disney/Pixar given their recent struggles.

It made $113 Million alone on Friday & Saturday, which is nuts. For comparison, IF is approaching $101 Million after 1 Month and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is approaching $157 Million after 1 Month & 1 Week.

Gatdamn that's a lot of money for Pixar. Next week's wide releases are "The Bike Riders" and "The Exorcism".

Not listed, but it turns out that horror movie "Tarot" ended up being a surprise hit.

It's worth pointing out that with such a minuscule budget & a legitimate thirst for horror throughout the year now, movies like Tarot (or Ouija or Truth or Dare) can be easily bankable big hits. It'd be great if Hollywood in general followed suit but I think it's been some of the realm of horror for the last 6-8 years now for a reason. IMO those tend to supplement the studios and give them the financial $$ to then blow other movies with $125+ Million budgets.

Right now Tarot's looking at $45.41 Million globally. Talk To Me was a surprise hit and made a massive $92.18 Million largely on word of mouth. Barbarian made $45.35 Million globally.

The horror fanbase just isn't the same as the normal, average fanbase that Hollywood tries to coerce to their big blockbuster movies. No way is a Jurassic World franchise movie gonna cost only $50 Million or even $75 Million. A future James Bond movie isn't gonna be $25 Million. A lot of that is due to CGI costs, scheduling reshoots, and casting salaries. Even somebody like Chris Nolan who is well known for cutting corners on budgets had a $100 Million production budget for Oppenheimer ignoring the marketing budget. Even something like Inception had a $160 Million production budget back in 2010 (equivalent to $230.45 Million production budget today) with a big marketing push.

If you want more staggering numbers for Inside Out 2, just Monday & Tuesday alone it has put up $51.247 Million. This success actually swayed me to get a ticket for this coming Sunday so it did its job in that regard.

It did a 30 Million Wednesday on Juneteenth. Just an unreal run. Theaters really needed a performance like this after Furiosa, The Fall Guy, and some of the other recent bombs.

Just going into its 2nd Weekend it's already at $255 Million domestically and $481 Million worldwide. Dune Part 2 made $282 Million domestically ($711 Million worldwide largely on the strength of the international market) for comparison.

As you said @Brocklock, just an unreal run.

Goddamn, "Inside Out 2" is a force of nature. "Bikeriders" cost either $35 or $40 million, so it should be interesting how the following weeks pan out. Also, good for "Kinds of Kindness", which is the biggest select theaters opening of the year so far.

All things considered, The Bikeriders did very well and better than I expected. I was thinking it was going to open to like 6 or 7. For a non ip, drama it did pretty solid. Tom Hardy is a genuine draw imo, and Austin Butler will be one soon.

As noted in the Inside Out thread, the screening I saw of IO 2 was pretty packed with 50+ people and several late stragglers (and groups). This movie's a monster hit.

"Ticket sales declined just 35% from its mighty $154 million debut, resulting in the seventh-biggest sophomore outing in history and best ever for an animated film.

After eight days in theaters, “Inside Out 2” surpassed “Dune: Part II” — which generated $282 million domestically and $711 million worldwide — as the biggest movie of the year."

And for Kinds of Kindness: "Searchlight will add 500 screens next weekend before opening “Kinds of Kindness” nationwide on July 3."

I did not much like The Bikeriders but Tom Hardy channeling Mickey Rourke but with a honking ChiCAHgo accent was, admittedly, a hoot. Much less a hoot was Austin Butler's bargain-bin Brad Pitt.

Inside Out 2 is going to crack $400 Million domestically by the weekend and $800 Million worldwide with today's daily numbers. Now I'm legitimately wondering if Despicable Me 4, Twisters, or Deadpool vs. Wolverine are gonna surpass what IO 2 ends up doing.

Next week should be interesting, with the new "Despicable Me" movie, and "MaXXXine" being the big smaller movie (my theater isn't getting it :(). The only big releases the week after are "Fly Me to the Moon" and "Longlegs"

Interesting to note that AQP Day 1 outdid Inside Out 2 on Friday but then they switched (almost to identical numbers) on Saturday. Hard to argue with theaters but I think AQP Day 1 could've won the weekend if it had a slightly higher theater count. With that said, if you're a theater you'd better be showing Inside Out 2 where-ever possible and however much you can.

EDIT: Inside Out 2 has already topped $1 Billion worldwide... jesus. And it still has July openings for Czech Republic, Finland, Hong Kong, Netherlands, Sweden, and Japan (August 1st).

I love me some Michael Rooker but this fucking guy knows that the majority of the last 15 years of box office successes have been long god damn movies, right and really, throughout the history of films, including the fucking marvel movies he’s been in.

Several movies are changing release dates, most getting pushed up a week.

Trap moving to 8/2/24. Now going up against Harold & the Purple Crayon and Saving Bikini Bottom: A Sandy Cheeks Movie to offer a good adult alternative.
Here moving to 11/15/24. Notable for starring Tom Hanks and reuniting a lot of the Forrest Gump crew. Oscar Contender. Not a lot of competition so smart move to try and get ahead of a couple bigger movies (and Moana 2 on 11/27).
Wicked moving to 11/22/24. Going up against Gladiator II in an interesting move.
