Looks like the final numbers will decide the #1 spot but right now Kung Fu Panda 4 has edged out Dune: Part Two by $900,000

Final numbers came in for the Top 10 with KF4 slightly performing better while Dune did slightly worse. TASMN also performed slightly better as did Arthur the King.

"Ghostbusters" and "Immaculate" made what was expected, while "Late Night With the Devil" is probably the best theatrical debut for a Shudder/IFC release. Good to see "Dune" continuing the rake in cash

Big opening for "Godzilla X Kong" (made $194 million worldwide), and ouch for "Ghostbusters". Good to see "Dune", "Immaculate" and "Late Night With the Devil" still making cash.

Not too surprised over Ghostbusters as I figured families would see that thing opening weekend then flock to Godzilla x Kong (or just skip it entirely for GxK). The only hope for Ghostbusters is it can leg out a solid April as there's not a lot of other competition except maybe Civil War and Abigail (unless The First Omen really surprises).

Sting probably will open small and get thrown onto streaming pretty quickly despite the solid reviews (scoring a 6/10 from critics and audience). Good little period for horror in Late Night With the Devil, The First Omen, Immaculate, Sting, and the upcoming Abigail (I think this may be the biggest hit of the group).

I think in a lot of ways, such competition actually hurts the individual films because they end up being more like a Malignant ($13 Million domestically) than say Barbarian ($40 Million domestically), Talk To Me ($48 Million domestically), or M3GAN ($95 Million domestically) where it can really ride the word of mouth with little genre competition to face.

Abigail actually ended up doing slightly better making just under $10.3 Million (around $10.297 in finals). It doesn't have a lot of competition coming up in terms of genre-fare outside of the crappy looking Tarot so I could see it ending up around $40-$55 Million all told when it's done domestically.

Also Spy x Family continues to prove that despite mostly limited releases and opening weekend heavy, that anime can be a legitimate money maker for theaters now desperately turning & trying to get people in via Fathom Event screenings (just look at the re-releases of classic movies coming up: Alien, Star Wars Episode 1: Phantom Menace, The Mummy, The Muppet Movie, The Neverending Story, etc.)

Finally, for all the bitching about how, "no original movies are being made," it's less that than the fact that people simply aren't (usually) going to see those in the same way they did in the 80s, 90s, and 00s but COVID really fucked the entire model up period and theaters are simply going to struggle to get re-engagement for 90% of movies unless the right ones come along ala The Super Mario Bros. Movie or Barbie. It's also a lot of hindsight being 20/20 and people picking and choosing the big blockbusters that weren't IPs while often ignoring they were usually already written books in cases like The Exorcist, Jaws, Jurassic Park, etc.

Here's a list of mostly original movies just until September, I'm including biopics because that's been a thing forever gtfo "IP" bitchers: Civil War, Abigail, Challengers, Unsung Hero, The Fall Guy, Tarot, Back to Black, IF, Sight, Ezra, Robot Dreams, The Watchers, The Bikeriders, Janet Planet, Fly Me to the Moon, Cuckoo, The Fire Inside, Trap, Blink Twice, The Forge, Slingshot, and City of Dreams. That's 22 movies between now and September that are all getting a wide release on a weekend. You can even throw in Speak No Evil on 9/13 for 23 movies.

"Civil War" continuing to rake in cash, and that's a pretty steep drop for "Spy X Family". Next week's the beginning of the Summer movie season with "The Fall Guy"

I'm loving the doomsayers for GB:FE ignoring that it's currently within $12m of the ~$200m it needs to break even, and that's without streaming rights or home video sales (streaming or BluRay).

It'll make its money back and we're going to get another GB entry, just probably on a smaller budget, especially with Sony so willing to throw money at even more obscure IPs after they should've learned better.

Also it was the only Ghostbusters movie released in March. Ghostbusters: Afterlife was released in November and made $136.8 Million adjusted (while having Harold Ramis' death to boost it). The franchise is very domestic heavy unlike the global-ness of say The Fast & The Furious so it doing almost $115 Million isn't bad (could be better but it'd also look better if the budget was $75 Million like the other one) considering it wasn't a June/July release like the original duo & reboot or November like Afterlife.

We'll probably get a 3rd movie with a budget closer to that $75-$85 Million.

Ouch for "The Fall Guy" and hey, there are still people deluding themselves into thinking the prequels are good.

This summer/fall/winter is gonna be really interesting to see how many big movies actually hit this year for movie theaters. I used to think we could get 8+ movies at $300+ Million Domestic and now I'm dwindling that down to maybe 4-5?

Last year had 5 with The Little Mermaid just missing by under $2 Million and Avatar missing by just $13 Million. For comparison, there were 8 in 2022, 9 in 2019, 5 in 2018, and 7 in 2017.

Potential $300+. I'd be surprised if Kingdom of Planet of the Apes does $200+ as Dawn did the best and that was just $208 Million domestically. Same for Bad Boys: Ride or Die where I could see that topping out around $215-$225 max.
- The Garfield Movie or Inside Out 2. I'd hedge my bet on the latter but kids can easily rocket a movie up if it hits right (see The Super Mario Bros. Movie).
- Despicable Me 4. I think this is a near lock. Minions: The Rise of Gru did $370 Million while DM3 still did $264 Million.
- Twisters. This could be a pure summer movie popcorn fest but it also faces stiff competition immediately so that could fade really fast like Mission Impossible last year.
- Deadpool and Wolverine. Another, to me, easy lock.
- Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. I think there's gonna be a ton of hype for this one. If it lives up to the hype in reviews, it could be a shoe-in.
- Joker: Folie a Deux. See BB.
- The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. The LOTR trilogy had budgets under $100 Million and were massive. The Hobbit largely struggled by comparison with $200 Million budgets and barely getting to $240-$250 Million domestically after marginal reviews. This could really go either way.

So that would be roughly 5 by my count with Inside Out 2 being in there with DM4, D&W, BB, Joker Sequel.

The Fall Guy looked like a generic action comedy imo and the marketing was kind of obnoxious. I'm kind of in Ryan Gosling fatigue at this point after the last year and I wonder if the general audience feels similar. I love the man, but he's never been a big box office draw.

Kung Fu Panda 4 has quietly made 6X its budget worldwide looking like it has an outside chance to crack $200 Million domestically. That opened at $57.98 Million so it will be interesting to see if something like Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes can have similar legs during its run.

Also looks like theaters are gonna sacrifice Abigail and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare to the movie production gods so they can get more theaters for Back to Black, IF, and The Strangers: Chapter 1 next weekend. Then Furiosa and The Garfield Movie drop 5/24 so I can see a lot of movies that would normally have longer runs getting short-changed and thrown out in favor of those.

"If" did about what was projected. The fact we're getting a "Strangers" trilogy feels like the most pointless reboot imaginable, as they could have just made another sequel instead.

I think If is the second highest opening for an original film post pandemic. With it passing Free Guy also with Ryan Reynolds. I'm beyond tired of Ryan Reynolds, but he is a legitimate draw in a time where there aren't many left.

I do wonder if John Krasinski directing helped matters, considering the popularity of the "A Quiet Place" movies.

For all of the ish Gen Zers give to NPCs, Ryan Reynolds is the most NPC like movie star. Which is probably what made him such a slam dunk casting choice for Free Guy.

Yes, I am fully aware that I am a good 15-20 years too old to be calling people NPCs.
