HOT! I mean HEAT!

Super Bowl halftime... Usher...can I mute it for some hot Shane O Mac commentary? He lost the random bimbo gimmick being with him after a few weeks.

SHAMROCK vs VADER for the IWGP RINGS UWFI unified Pancrase title: These 2 old enemies have a solid sprint for the few mins they are allowed. Shamrock busts out some top rope stuff. They both trade suplexes and such until Shammy catches the Baby Bull with an abrupt armlock.

We see Sable on the set of Pacific Blue. She has to compete with the acting skills of the 2nd male lead of Saved By the Bell, so the standards are high.

Val Venis vs Marc Mero Just a back drop so Praying Dustin can jump Val and choke the sin out of him. Jackie took a slam from Val that probably didn't feel great.

Taka vs Gangrel I assume this is connected to Gangrel/Togo from last week...or they are just running through the jobbers. Was Gangrel a face and I totally forgot it? He's working heels every week. Whatever arena they taped this in was too small for the stage set up so Gangrel lays in the middle of a pile of candles for his entrance.

Shane proves me wrong by having a woman by him. She isn't dressed like a trollop like previous bimbos. She's supposed to be a gym worker or something and is dressed in her fitness casual gear. She probably got a gig as a make good for Vince bending her over in the massage chair at the local Anytime Fitness.

European Champ D LO vs THE MONSTER AMONGST MEN the Big Red Retarded Libertarian! D Lo is scurred. Kane tosses him around as Taker glares. Taker goes over to kill Mark Henry to establish BSK leadership status. The Rock runs in with a chair and stuns Kane briefly. Rock runs off and Taker and Kane destroy the NOD for fun. D LO gets the super mega death Tombstone with Taker spiking him

X Pac vs DUBBA J in a Summerslam rematch- Lumberjack rules. I assume this was a play on all the faces helping Pac shave JJ at the PPV.

The Lumberjacks are all tag team geeks except the New Age Outlaws are supporting Pac and Bradshaw is the lone single guy since Terry Funk left him hanging months ago.

Austin comes in to the arena and this has to be the smallest place they taped TV in during the BOOM period. I wonder how this little venue slipped into the rotation?? Mahomes celebrates the endless halftime show by throwing a pic. Austin waxes poetic on the BROTHERS OF DESTRUCTION I'm sure. Shamrock comes out and gets in Austin's face and now I wish I had the volume up so I could figure out WTF is happening. Vince and the Stooges come to ringside and Austin once again finishes the show looking confused.

Heat~!

3 weeks after Summerslam and Foley is now a face. Shamrock and The Rock walk out with him.
Dustin the Praying Plumber Grandson vs Mrs Foley's Baby Boy
We see Vince and the Bros of Destruction plotting in the back. Foley wins via bare handed mandible claw, which is upsetting to see. Gross. Somehow a sock that was stuck next to his sweaty gut seems more sanitary.
Dustin is sad he jobbed again. Val appears at ringside to show Dustin his ex wife(?) performing sex acts on him. Runnels curls in a ball in the ring. I don't remember the Praying Dustin arch lasting this long.
Taker and Kane chat with Cole. Mankind, Shammy and the Rock attack them like true babyfaces. Vince and the stooges send in the army of agents to break it up.
Vince is manipulating Foley when we come back from break. Vince and Mick shake hands.
Luna vs Jackie gets no entrances as we go to the ring at the bell. Giant Silva looks hung over. Mega Star Sable is at ringside with the Oddities. I miss the finish but I think it was Marc Mero related. Sable cuts a promo as her and Jackie can't stop feuding. With Sable getting mad over I'm surprised they didn't fast tract a bunch of women into the picture to set up more challengers for the golden goose.
Foley and Rock are escorted out the building by the stooges, with Foley even shaking hands with Brisco. Apparently Rock is working the Sting to Foley's Luger gimmick.
DX comes down to chat about their genitals. We get D Lo, Jarrett and Owen vs Billy Gunn, HHH and X Pac
Southern Justice is aligned with the Nation in some Liberal utopia where Freddie Joe Floyd's death by the State Patrol lead to the end of racism.
LONG TERM STORYTELLING: Edge beats Taka quickly, but the rest of the flippy guys run in to beat down our long haired hero. Gangrel runs in and chases them off. What a suspenseful match it will be when the little geeks lose to the same guys they already have been, but now in tag team form.
Al Snow is now a thing. He and Head are annoying Kevin Dunn in the TV truck. This somehow leads to Snow being in handcuffs and being in the ring with Sgt Slaughter reading him the riot act. Sarge seems to convince Snow to let the nice security team haul him off, only to attack Snow when he turns his back. He tries to put on the Cobra Clutch even with Snow's hand cuffed behind his back. Sarge is pulled off by Jim Dotson and others. Snow smiles through the pain.
DOA vs the Back the Blue Brothers of Destruction
The 4 trade their racist ideals, with the DOA being more open, Kane being nuanced and Taker saying old man shit that he doesn't see as racist.
I miss the match to go put away food before my idiot cats can crawl up and steal anymore chicken. Uhhh the Niners score and miss the XP. Ellering takes a licking.

I mean, yeah, technically. If you get a face tattoo, you're basically revoking your white privilege.
Is he not white? Confused.

HEAT!
Vince talks. I'm sure this is plotting against Austin/Rock/Shamrock or some combo.
Golga the Tenta vs Mosh Worldwide eat your heart out. What a match up! An Army of Babyfaces destroys 2 heels. What booking.
Shane O Mac has no bimbo. He is wearing a hat designed to make you want to punch him in the face.
DX has been attacked in the locker room.
Mark Henry comes to the ring as I ponder that Mr T and Carl Weathers and AH-NOLD were the only good commercials tonight. Henry cuts a promo. No idea what he's saying as we still muting this bitch so we can listen to Tony Romo banter. Vince comes down to talk to Henry as we see a cage is hanging above the ring.
Roving reporter Cole watches the Stooges arguing with Rock/Foley and Shamrock in a dark part of the backstage.
The Hardy Boyz vs Mens Teoh and Funaki Jeff hares his spine even in jabroni matches and splatters on the cement.
I just showed myself how well I am paying attention by noticing this is the live go home show from the Break Down PPV.
Billy Gunn vs 8 Ball or Skull. Ellering is SWOLE. Taking the good horse drugs now that Hawk and Animal have given up being shredded.
This is 2 on 1 for reasons I can't put together. Mahomes is going for a game winning drive, which makes a DOA match perfectly timed as who wants to watch this shit? I guess that earlier DX locker room attack must be related to this. DOA beats the Lone Gunn. But then X Pac and Road Dogg run in anyway so I guess they weren't hurt. I'm confused. Muted Russo booking is confusing. Jeff Jarrett gets involved in this as DX gets laid out.
Vince walks down with Kane and Taker for the main event promo. 10 seconds left in the Super Bowl. Vince is in the ring as Taker and Kane stand at cage side.
Chyna beats up Mark Henry in the backstage. A technician working on the cage takes off his wig and reveals himself to be Stone Cold. He smacks Vince around as Kane and Taker fail to make the save. Vince's dying fish selling is goofy, especially when the replay is done in FFWD. Vince sells each kick from Austin by reaching up for the heavens.
Vince is annoyed with his monsters when we come back from the break. We get a hard sell highlight package to lead us into the PPV.
Super Bowl update: OVERTIME! I just want to go pull a Vince on the commode and head to bed.
Oh we aren't done yet. Vince cuts another promo in the aisle with Sarge and the Stooges flanking him to watch for Austin.

Me too, honestly. I was really into Goldust having a freakshow stable and liked him being a minor player in the Mankind feud. I'm gonna blame both Sable ego and Foley refusing to work with Mero for ruining it.

IIRC, it's mostly the Mero aspect. Foley just didn't want to work with Mero, at all, and the stuff where Mankind calls Sable "mommy" was to lead into a Mero/Mankind program. I believe this was also around the time of Mero's knee injury that jump started the "Marvelous" Marc gimmick?

Mero/Foley was originally slated for WM 13 but Mick turned it down. It didn't matter anyway because Mero blew out his knee.

Timeline doesn't quite match up to the GD/Foley stuff with Sable. GD was face by the time Mero went down hurt.

I wonder if Foley turning down the feud in 97 messed up Mero's upward mobility push as in Feb 97 he's in a throwaway PPV match with Cassidy that would have been more appropriate 10 months earlier upon debut.
The knee injury of course ended whatever Mania plans they had.
Sable was already morphing into a stronger presence as she switched to her leather look, got the bolt ons and was doing things like confronting face Taker during a Mero/Taker babyface match. I believe she even kicked Taker possibly.
Slammys 97 pretty much sealed Mero's fate as Sable stole the show in the bikini contest as Mero had to sheepishly grin.
This is the same couple than invoked God in a promo in Sept 96 thanking him for Mero winning the IC belt. Sable was in an evening gown at the time.

Mero is in my Boys stable, for sure. I was really into him as a midcard heel, and when he busted the SSP back out toward the end of his run and did the little hiking up of his trunks was fun.

Loved Rocky winning at the time since it was out of nowhere. I fee like the Sultan match at WM13 where he was heavily booed was the beginning of the end of him as a smiling babyface. He barely made any PPV title defenses after that.

Rock winning it makes sense because it was just the trajectory of his push. I don't know if the Thursday Raw was the intended place but if he wasn't set to win it by Final Four I'd be surprised. The Sultan match makes sense because they probably assumed Fatu was the guy to have a great match while also being an alleged monster heel. HHH/Goldust didn't need the title, and honestly it being involved would've made it a clusterfuck.

Was Prince Iaukea winning the TV Title a response to Rocky winning the IC Title or vice versa? I think it was former. Just felt like a bold faced transparent ripoff.

I don’t think Triple H losing the IC Title was a burial at all. They really did hype up Rocky huge for first three or four months of his run. It wasn’t until everyone decided his first IC Title run sucked that I think people decided he sucked.

Iaukea won the TV title four days later on Nitro on 2/17 so it was definitely WCW's immediate direct response to Rocky winning gold. He can't be the only Island boy to hold gold in wrestling!

It was the former. I vividly remember laughing my ass off at how blatant it was and how Iaukea looked completely out of place.

I remember reading the Nitro results on the WCW website (I was watching Raw that night, obviously) on Tuesday morning and was really thrown at Iaukea winning the title since I had just watched him being squashed by Jim Duggan on the previous episode of Saturday Night!

WCW really tried pushing Prince as a legit having him go over Regal in a rematch and winning a series of matches against Rey before mercy-killing the whole thing 2 months later.

They should've had him drop the title to Savage. TV title in the DDP/Savage feud would only have made things better and completely overshadowed the failed experiment.

Not just only Island boy but Island boy second generation wrestler.

Rocky had been strongly pushed before he won the IC Title, even if he was just beating the Leif Cassidys and Salvatore Sinceres of the world. Him winning the belt was a surprise but hardly a shock to eight year old me.

I just double checked Iaukea’s Cagematch and HE HADN’T WON A SINGLE TELEVISED MATCH when he won the TV Title. It just felt so random.

Flukey winning is way more forgivable than suddenly being able to hang with people. Sometimes flukes happen, and if you have a title that gets defended often it makes it more important when you know it can change hands like that to anyone. But that doesn't mean you can go bell to bell with Rey out of nowhere, giving Rey his worst ppv match to that point in the process.

I never hated Sasso and his Austin was good. No business being on wrestling TV or anything.

TK not booking Arquette yet is surprising. Feels like the ultimate 2019 Mox match.

2019 AEW is super forgettable for me when it doesn't involve gimps or the Elite.
