The alleged plan at the time was that it would build to Bulldog winning the title back at the next UK PPV in April. I'm sure Shawn would have found a way to get out of losing it even if he hadn't broken his back.
Without busting out the WON I have to ask if that was the concession made the day of the show to "get the match in the ring" since Shawn pulled rank? Bulldog was dedicating the match to his dying sister.
Hogan didn't fall for Shawn's "You lose first and I'll pay you back" game.

Another of the triggering points for me coming out of Montreal is that "We can't afford you Bret" becomes "We have to pay Shawn to not wrestle to keep him out of WCW because we clearly know he's just exaggerating his injury and he'll jump at the first chance he can" within a matter of months.

Maybe my gimmick rebooking this year should have been "Jobber teams each year for Survivor Series"
I mean, they put the Andre Memorial on the show to give everybody a payday, they can do a jobber SS match on the pre-show. Hell, it'd be the perfect time to pull the Bad News spot, since none of the heel jobbers would have any history of working together.

EDIT - Actually, the more I think about this, the more I'm into it: they could use a jobber SS pre-show match to introduce a surprise NXT callup and put them over in a big way in their debut, without having to go over anybody that matters. Come out of the match as the Sole Survivor, and then make their "official" debut the next night on Raw.

Or maybe "soft launch" a gimmick change for a lower card guy, in anticipation of a potential push. Kickstart a new feud, create a new tag team... a lot of untapped potential, in my opinion.

Yea they tried real hard to get that Aggression album over so they used the themes for a few select wrestlers for a few weeks. Big Show, DX, and Godfather used their themes as well. Hello, Ice-T even rapped Godfather to the ring at WM2000.

This might be a dumb question/thought but do we know Shawn winning was due to him "pulling rank" as you put it? (Note: I never read his book)

Bulldog losing at One Night Only with the build up it had definitely seems like the type of thing Vince McMahon would've pushed for/written in well before the actual event and we know that WWE/Vince weren't always steadfastly tied to their future storylines/matches just because they were down on paper so to speak.

    • The plan, for the longest time, had been for the British Bulldog to defeat Shawn Michaels. Everyone agrees on this point, including Shawn. Bulldog even dedicated the match to his sister dying from cancer.
On the day of the show, Shawn pitched an idea: what if he beat Bulldog in underhanded fashion, winning the European Championship, thus building to a bigger rematch in the UK a few months later, where Bulldog would win it back? Vince accepted this pitch, and enacted it.

My favorite match at SummerSlam 1998 was the mixed tag team match where Sable and a mystery partner going against Marc Mero & Jacqualine Moore. That mystery partner turned out to be a young Edge. I really believe that match was the match that helped Edge get noticed by the fans, back then, because of Sable's star power during the Attitude Era.

That was Edge's first big moment. They kind of telegraphed the surprise by showing Edge in the crowd beforehand and going "What's he doing here?".

To be fair every Edge moment was him hanging out in the crowd and them asking what he was doing. I think they scaled back after he almost killed that Boricua in his actual debut.

I know the Brood is fondly remembered but I really wish they'd just let the Edge/Gangrel feud play out. I loved the idea of two brand new guys just feuding out of the gate.

I agree. The feud they had was much more over in my book. Also, I really wished that they had let Edge have a run as the WWF European Champion. I also would've booked Edge and Gangrel in street fight-style matches. That would've been better for those two guys instead of The Brood.

I just really dug the idea of two brand new guys who hated each other on sight. It let's them get themselves over out of the gate. Everyone at school was losing their minds about the fire pit bump despite barely knowing who they were. It was super fresh and I don't think it ever has been done like that before.

I dig the Brood and all but you can definitely make an argument it set all of them back.

I don't think Edge should've ever been in the Brood, strictly because it was put over so damn well that he and Gangrel had history. Adding Christian to the mix and revealing that he was Edge's little brother made it better, and I remember thinking that they'd align either Undertaker or Kane with Gangrel/Christian and have Edge as a face that temporarily allies with Austin and Foley against them.

We kinda/sorta got this when the Ministry came about, but that got so bloated so quickly with Taker's buddies that it didn't matter.

Agreed.

I would've signed Vampiro while he was still a free agent, put HIM into The Brood with Gangrel & Christian, have THEM join The Undertaker's "Ministry of Darkness" stable, and have Edge align with Kane and have them both go to war with The Undertaker and his evil cult.

Given what we know about his attitude backstage, his dangerous work, and how he's attempted to play the political game everywhere he's worked? Vampiro would've been booked against Bradshaw and Faarooq sooner than later and taught a hard lesson.

Hmmm. Never knew about that. Well, in that case, just keep it with Gangrel & Christian.
