The Attitude Era Thread Vol 1

Foley dragging his name in his book (and it wasn't even based on his actual talent) formed a negative opinion about him amongst fans. Always thought Mero was solid enough though I didnt care too much for the Marvelous era. Wild Man leaping through the air with Sable at his side was awesome.

Foley dragging wasn't as bad as how he got treated during the Benoit press run.

Shortly before Earthquake was brought back and turned into Golga, One Man Gang was also given a tryout. He did a job to Headbanger Thrasher of all people. It was a dark match of course but still a strange result to read.

I get something new out of this segment each time I watch it. Absolutely berserk for the time. I always forget Pillman actually does fire some rounds at the very end. I guess we were supposed to think he was a bad shot or something.

Nah see that scene is where it gets exposed as a work since she calls him Hunter and not Paul. Animal is making sure they keep kayfabe.

Was there a reason the winged eagle belt was used for that? I remember being disappointed they weren't bringing it back. Everyone looks good with that belt (except Flair).

This was before the smoking skull belt, which is still ugly btw.

The smoking skull belt is so ugly. Didn't even look good on Austin.

If only it could spin!

but did they ever sell replica belt buckles of this or was that too obvious that the geniuses at Stamford couldn’t comprehend it.

They actually did sell replica smoking skull belts as well as a custom brahma bull belt for Rock which he never used on TV though they certainly teased it.

Of course they sold replica belts, they would never not let an opportunity to do that slip away but actual belt buckles is so on brand for Austin it’s an easy layup.

I seem to remember Dwayne had a Brahma belt buckle at some point, maybe later in his Hollywood Rock era.

Like real replicas or foam ones? I don't remember seeing an actual replica until like 2002.

They make the actual replicas now but for that era I think it was just like the Jakks toy belts. At least I don’t remember them, I can’t find any solid data to back this up.

Holy shit, I've never seen this promo. If this aired on Raw instead of Shotgun, people would be talking about this promo along with Kalisto's famous one and The Genesis of McGillicutty as some of the worst ever. I could see the office watching this promo and deciding to never give Gangrel much of a push again. It was about 2 months after he debuted and I don't remember him talking much after this.

I thought the promo where the Brood exposed Dok Hendrix as Michael Hayes was pretty good but it was helped by having Edge and Christian talk in addition to Gangrel.

His push was killed when his shirt opened on RAW and Vince saw his gut.

Yeah, I remember the first time I saw the gut too. I was ten when Gangrel debuted and I thought he was super cool. Than the gut combined with eventually hearing his voice killed the aura. He seemed like a decent enough worker though. I liked his PPV matches with Dlo and X-Pac at the time.

Was Edge joining the Brood just a vehicle to get Edge more over as a babyface after the eventual split? Because respectfully I can't imagine thinking that Gangrel ever had more star potential than Edge, gut or no gut
